2. A real good roster player.
3. Two first round picks.

That was my first thought as well but not if you look at comparables. Remember Barkov would essentially be a 1 year rental as he is a UFA after his contract is up (I assume this is a deadline deal or in the offseason).

Stone cost Oscar Lindberg and a late 2nd for a similar scenario. O’Reilly cost a 1st, 2nd, Thompson, Sobotka, and Berglund. I think this is a competitive offer. The real question is whether we will be able to add the remaining pieces.

I would ask you to provide comparables for the package you propose. I think it’s a reasonable place to start but you should also think about how FLA maximizes the return if they know they aren’t going to resign him.

I don’t think Minnesota should be emptying the cupboards just yet. I understand the need for an elite center, but they’ve got Rossi. They’ve got Khovanov. They’ve got Khustnutdinov, McBain, Beckman, etc etc. Surely at least ONE will fit the bill. For now I think it’d be better off long term just sticking with the process for a year or two. There’s some key UFA classes coming up here too.

For everyone saying that package isn't enough I mean -sure I suppose- but Fiala had only 8 fewer points than Barkov this year in 5 minutes less per game with way worse linemates (!) and he's an RFA to boot. JEE and a 15th or so pick are quite nice assets too. Gosh.

Barkov isn't a half a year rental like Stone. He's a step up from the guy in terms of both level, position and contract. ROR wasn't a rental in the slightest, his current contract that has 3 years left was signed with Buffalo, and it was widely considered as the stupidest trade Botteril made. The comparables don't work.

Considering that Wild needs to refine their prospect pool, I don't see going after Barkov as a wise move. The cost will be too hefty. Think about your current offer and adding one of Rossi or Kaprizov and yet another first to the pile. That's in the ballpark.

To your second, and I think most important, point, I think the the Wild don’t get better by making the deal in this iteration. They turn their best assets into a single better asset. It’d sure be fun if they did manage to get him though.

To your first point, I think this offer is better than the one for Stone and it is close to the value of the ROR deal. FLA gets better in this deal. But as for anticipated value, I think this is what a team may offer. Anymore really is too much for a player unless it’s the last piece for a cup. WPG has probably placed a similar, super high value to it now but nobody will pay it. Eventually Laine will love for some thing like this plus another pick or prospect given his team control.
