Not sure if you took this into account but Zetterberg, Hossa, and Gaborik have all been on LTIR for a couple years so their contracts aren't that bad for their teams.

I’d say elite is ambitious if we’re calling elite like the top 10-15 defenders elite since I wouldn’t have Karlsson in my top 10 but he hasn’t been bad and he has yet to have a full healthy year (which is coming up this year according to sharks management)

also...there are worse contracts than some of those.
you have to factor in the $$ and term. for me small contracts to lower level guys are never as horrible as a bunch of overpays albeit to usable to good players.

Seabrook worse than smith
backstrom worse than Hagelin
Marner worse than kerfoot

not cause these guys are awful players (except sea brook) but the contracts are overpaid and take up a ton of cap.

Umm, how did he have a down year exactly? Last I checked he was just 3 points shy of a point per game and that is likely because he was playing with a broken finger for 7 or 8 games and could barely shoot the puck lol
