How do they view dermontt? Let him stay on the third pair and kill penalties as long as he doesn't cost much?
I love Dermott. I think, on a smaller scale, he's a Gardiner Muzzin combo. I see him playing his way into the top 4 as early as next year, depending on who we add in the offseason of course. He plays hard, hits, really tries in all ends. Battles well, most importantly in front of the net. Top notch skater, good puck mover, fine in the O zone. He was slowed up a bit by injury this year, but stepped up in a big way every time he was called to play in top4, including in playoffs. Like Gardiner, though, his flaw is that he's not the best decision-maker. But I think if he plays with and closely shadows Muzzin next year, and as he gains experience, that'll become less of an issue.
For these reasons, I would be reluctant to do this deal. I really like Dermott and hope that the Leafs bring him back this year on a bridge deal. If it was the difference between having enough cap for a Pietrangelo signing or something huge like that, I might circle back on the idea, but otherwise I'll keep Dermott and Kerfoot.
Also for Toronto I don't see him making more than 1.3 - 2M next year on a 1 or 2 year deal, so thats big for cap reasons.
