Description
So there's a rumour that Andersen wants out of Toronto. There's also a rumour Thorton will sign with Toronto. And the rumour that Pittsburgh is shopping Murray. Based on those rumours, I tried to get the Leafs under the cap, recover some draft picks and strengthen their defence.

I may have missed the mark with Matt Murray, but I see a lot of Murray for Andersen trades on here which makes no sense for Pittsburgh. Philly might be able to use him as a mentor and 1b for Carter Hart.

Who said it? I haven’t heard this Anaheim rumor except for posters on this site.

Philly won't want Anderson when Carter Hart is their stud of the future and present. Maybe Calgary or Edmonton

I've read it a couple of places. Doesn't mean it's true. But I thought it would be fun to do this thought experience based on if it was.

Quite possibly. I was trying to be balanced, but I may have undervalued Freddy. But while a draft pick may be higher, I don't think you'll get much more than that.

Andersen would be traded for a 1st if he is traded. Thats an elite goalie. Murray would either be a Leaf or a Senator depending on Andersen being or not being there for Leafs next year.

Nylander is not getting traded unless a Ryan Ellis type is going the other way (longterm signed top pairing D).

Thornton is not signing in Toronto. I know Friedge told us that, but I think Thornton would go to a weird team like Colorado or something.

(Ryan Ellis to Toronto is not in realm of fantasy or even just what makes sense. That is a possibility.. thats what I can tell you)

I agree that Ellis to Toronto is in the realm of possibility but I would imagine Nylander would not be Nashville's targeted return for him. Ellis is very likely top 10 in Norris voting this year (maybe top 5) and still has quite a few good years ahead of him (defense generally age better than forwards).

Knowing Poile, he would want Marner, which can be worked with, but its Ellis + then.

Would Ellis + Bonino (50%) + Tolvanen for Marner + Liljegren make any sense?
This being under the premise that Kerfoot is also moved. Nashville will want Liljegren in there because they would be moving another 1st pair RD for the 2nd year in a row.

Personally I don't think Marner will ever be moved because to me he's the face of the franchise. As good as Matthews and Tavares are Marner just embodies Toronto more to me.

I dont think Leafs would be stupid enough to trade Liljegren.

IMO he has a similar ceiling to Cernak as a solid #4 shut down guy. I think if the Leafs are trying to acquire a top pairing RD he will have to be involved since it is one of the most high demand positions in the game teams usually don't just have spare replacements. Nashville definitely doesn't after moving Subban last year. Their defensive prospect pool is very dry (I have them drafting Sanderson this year because of that).

I don't know if Thornton will or won't go to Toronto but he actually said already once that he had conversations with the Leafs about signing there at the same time Marleau came to the Leafs but they couldn't make it work at the time. Obviously, since the man himself has already been in talks before to come to Toronto he wouldn't be opposed to it.

PIT needs RW not LW. PIT has Guentzel, zucker, McCann, ZAR, etc. down the LW. TOR has marner, Nylander, kapanen, etc. on RW.
Murray for Kapanen + makes more sense.
