Description
Sabres fans, what is your obsession with trading the 8OA, especially in deals under value. Familiarize yourself with the draft class this year, especially top 10. This isnt a year to trade a pick unless theres an offer than you cant refuse. We are practically guarenteed one of Holtz, perfetti, raymond, rossi who all are well worth an 8 OA pick. And who knows if any one slides. Trading the pick just to get a center until Cozens is ready is not the move using our pick. There are other ways to make this happen. You people need to read up on the draft this year before just throwing the pick out

depending whos there at 8OA and depending who they get for it, its not a bad option, so theirs no reason for anyone to stop coming up with ideas on how to best utilize it. Its not a completely stupid idea, like thinking the sabres are trading Eichel, trading 8oa is actually realistic

I'd like to think trading 8OA for a guy like Max Domi would work out well for the Sabres as long as his extension is reasonable. And, as you say, depending on who is available at eight.

Domi has had one very good season, the others very average. Hes a guy that would be a great addtion, but not for our 8OA.

Thats because people seem to not understand the calbre of players in this top end of the first round. Its not a pick you trade unless its an unrefusable offer.

Domi has played 375 games and scored 0.67 P/GP in his career. There's a possibility that the 8OA will be better than that but it's a small one and won't happen for several years yet. It's a pretty good bet for Adams to make IMO. But again, it depends on who is available at 8OA.

The top 8 IMO is very high end. this was before the lottery, before i knew where buff was picking. Sabres would be foolish to trade the pick for player such as domi.

I would trade this choice if there was a right deal. I understand that this is a strong project, but our draft pick can also disappoint many.

The Sabres are in win now mode, you can't argue that. If we miss the playoffs again, this franchise will collapse. The importance of winning has overtaken that of developing a prospect like Holtz or Lundell. I would take a risk on guys like Domi, Cirelli, Ehlers because it will take 3+ years for anyone we pick at 8 to mirror that production. We need guys to help develop mitts and Cozens, not more rookies

This is false. Please read up more on prospects this year. This isnt a normal year. There are 4-6 guys that are being labeled as making the NHL this year and making an impact. Trading the pick just because you are impatient is the exact same reason we got screwed with ROR. Wake up

lol calm down but there are talking about help right now for center position so your post is not true

This team needs help. Especially down the middle. See what’s out there for a No. 2 center. You wonder if Brandon Montour can sweeten the pot. You don’t know who might be willing to deal until you put up that “For Sale” sign.

They'd be foolish to not consider it, IMO. You are WAY overvaluing the draft pick and WAY overestimating the Sabres ability to get that pick right.

Between 2001 and 2015 there were 39 forwards taken with picks 4-7. If we rearrange them by P/GP performance we can see the odds of getting a difference-maker:

Superstar (1.00+ P/GP): 0/39 = 0%
Elite (0.75 - 0.99): 8/39 = 20.5%
Top-6 (0.50 - 0.74): 17/39 = 43.6%
Bottom-6 (< 0.50): 14/39 = 35.9%

I did that research when Buffalo was slotted to get the 7th pick, but since they're now picking 8th lets repeat the procedure but with picks 8-10. Forwards only, from 2001 to 2015 inclusive:

Superstar (1.00+ P/GP): 0/27 = 0%
Elite (0.75 - 0.99): 2/27 = 7.4%
Top-6 (0.50 - 0.74): 11/27 = 40.7%
Bottom-6 (< 0.50): 14/27 = 51.9%

High picks are great, but (cap aside) if you have a chance to trade your #8 pick for an established player in his early 20's who scores 0.67 P/GP you shouldn't dismiss that as "foolish". Only 2 of the players in the Top-6 range matched or exceeded 0.67 P/GP, meaning that you typically have a 14.8% chance of getting a player equal to or better (offensively) than Domi with that pick. AGAIN, it depends on who is available there, but to dismiss the notion of trading the pick so hastily is foolish.

Edited to add the link to the previous (pick 4-7) research: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/332985?post_id=1467976
