Description
could up the Toronto pick in FLA traded if needed, but my rationale was prospect (tippet) plus middle 6 forward (vatrano) for Muzzin, and then ekblad and a first for Marner. Tippet might be worth more than I think though, I'm not sure. Would only happen if the panthers don't make the playoffs for more years, Toronto isn't playoff successful, both teams want to change it up. Panthers would make ensuing moves to shore up the D, and Toronto would do the same with the offence. All the CBJ fans talk about how bad Murray is, so I figured I'd sign him to a one year deal where he could prove himself, try to make it in the top 6 out of camp, and if not, shine when injuries come on so that he can be flipped for something decent or else held on to as depth and then he'd get more money as a UFA. I think georgiev could prove to be a solid starter, and Campbell is good enough to provide support and take much of the load off of his shoulders.

tbh swap Johnsson with Kapanen or Mikheyev and it works. There's a reason almost all Leaf fans proposals involve getting rid of Johnsson...

Because most Leafs fans recognize that the LW organizationally is deeper than RW. That would be an awefully good reason.

I know, but I just really like him. His spot could be replaced by a variety of UFAs of similar value if needed

or that he turns into a negative impact player offensively without Matthews...

when he's not playing with Matthews he's essentially playing with the 3/4 lines. If he's playing top 6 he's admittedly much better

right...and actual positive impact play drivers have a positive impact even on the 3rd and 4th lines.

Mikhayev with 3rd/4th liners is a LOT better than Johnsson with 3rd/4th liners.

And if Johnsson is a 40ish point player with almost exclusively playing with the top line (he's spent about 75% of his entire career playing with either Matthews/Marner/Nylander) then it's not ridiculous to say that he's a 20ish point player if he was stapled to the bottom 6...

keep in mind though he's only played like one season. Injured for half of this year and played his entire rookie season alongside Matthews, so the sample size for him playing with somebody else can't be all that big. And its not unreasonable to expect that as a rookie, he wasn't necessarily the driver of play, but he's a very good complimentary piece. This year was tough for him because he was on and off injury, but never played in the top 6 and still had 8g/21pts in 43 games

he's 25....typical NHL aging curve peak for a forward is 24. Perhaps referring to him as a "rookie" is the issue here. In order to be as you say a "good complimentary piece" we should be able to show that Matthews' play is improving with Johnsson's presence. But the on-ice results don't actually show that. Matthews' play is quite literally unchanged with Johnsson vs. without him.

When you have a player who is not improving the play of his linemates and whose play drops significantly depending on the quality of teammates around him, that's called being a "passenger".

Passengers don't have a ton of value, since they can't self generate a ton of production, they need other people.

Johnsson is a good 3rd liner when healthy. His cap hit is a little high for a 3rd liner, he is undersized, and he is coming off a serious injury. All things the devalue his worth. On top of that, Toronto is in a cap crunch in a year that likely will not have a cap increase. His current worth in a trade is not worth a lot. Teams that may see value in him are Stanley cup contenders looking to strengthen their bottom 6, but likely cannot afford his cap, teams that have cap space for him are in a rebuild stage and are not interested in giving up picks for a 3rd liner. The reality is Toronto will likely be hard pressed to find a trade partner for him, and if they do, I suspect most maple leaf fans will be very disappointed in the return.
