Jets now trying to trade buff

Description
According to Frank Seravalli, the jets are trying to get back assets for buff before the deadline. If not they will terminate his contract after the deadline. Very smart by Chevy. The demand for him is pretty decent apparently.

So my question is at this point is what kind of assets do you think we could get back?

No more than a 3rd. He is a high risk acquisition with a sizeable cap hit for next year.

I mean not sure why they wouldn’t just terminate it. We’re gonna have to probably retain 50% if we want anything decent. Plus why would a team give anything up for a guy that probably won’t even play next year. I’d say most we get is a 3rd or 4th for a 50% retained buff. If we have to retain salary it makes moving him not even worth it as we should be using that cap elsewhere.

Idk I have a feeling it could be more than expected. If a team thinks he can play again for them, in the near future, there is no denying that he is a game changer on the ice.

If we could get any prospect or non conditional pick it has to be a win for us. Playoff Buff is an entirely different player than regular season Buff, and there might be some team that is playoff bound that would gamble on him coming back. Maybe like a 4th? I have no clue, there’s not really any precedent for this.

if he's coming back next year i think TML has to explore this option
after the TDL the cap isnt really a factor and next year they got enough UFA's coming off to make it work i they wanted him.

i just think he's the guy you want in the playoffs on your RD over Barrie (atleast on top pair anyways )

I agree but we’ve seen no indication he’s even close to a return. He reached the point in his rehab that he should’ve been skating but never got on the ice. Unless the team disclosed information that supports him returning, I don’t see us getting more than a 3rd. If they have information disclosing he wants to return. He could definitely fetch a 2nd and B prospect. Wouldn’t be surprised if Columbus Is in my n the bidding. They have the space and need a dman like buff

I think it's just Chevy doing his due diligence. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that if the Jets terminated his contract today and he signed with someone else before the deadline, he could play with that team in the playoffs. But if it's after the deadline, he wouldn't be able to play with them in the playoffs. So it's Chevy dangling that carrot to other teams that if you want a chance to have Buff this year for the post-season, you have to give us something. I'm sure the Jets would eat some salary to make it work too.
But it's obviously a gamble to other teams. So it's really all up in the air until Monday.
In terms of a return, I would have no clue. A mid-round pick is probably reasonable, but it could be anything. It's especially interesting because teams aren't allowed to contact Buff.
My guess is still that he never plays hockey again. If he's not gonna play for $7.6 million, why would he play for like $1.5 million with another team? He's got a ton of money, has won a cup, and has a family that I'm sure he just wants to spend more time with (and fishing, I'm sure haha)

Jets try for a mid-round to late pick of say 3rd thru 5th round (depending on the dance partners position in the draft pecking order)?
* Clause: Team getting BUFF should demand seeing him in person, require he pass a medical and a fitness test via team training staff...

I wonder if there’s a nasty contract and something shiny for buffy, it would be interesting, jets aren’t usually in the buyout market though. It’s a home run swing for a contender, could be a over the top addition, but needs a non contributing contract back and prospects or pick.

If they terminate before the deadline he will be eligible to sign with a playoff team, if the TDL passes he won't be able to play in the playoffs. So contenders might be willing to risk it and trade for him. If he doesn't play, he will be in the same situation he is now just with another team

A medical is always part of a trade...this will happen.

I say it will be a 2021 3rd pending if he plays next year....maybe even a conditional 2nd if he plays more than 50 games and gets more than 30 points or something..

I imagine that the only thing palatable for both sides will be conditional picks depending on how Buff does. One conditional pick for this season and then a second conditional pick for next year.

As the NHL has backed the Jets position here and given the green light for them to spend his cap money there isn't much risk to the acquiring team. If he doesn't play he doesn't impact the cap in any way. If he does play you get Buff who maybe decides to play another 5 more years. Who knows.

I'd imagine it would be future considerations, which become a 3rd round pick if Buff plays a game in the playoffs this year and a 2nd if he plays more than 50% of the playoff games and the team wins a round and a 1st if they go to the WCF.

Then the same thing the following year. If Buff plays 40 games it's a 2nd and if he puts up at least 40 points or is extended it changes to a 1st. (Buff has put up 40 points a season or at least been on that pace every year since he switched to D, so essentially for the last decade)

Could be a decent return for the Jets (2 late 1sts) if Buff performs like we expect. If he doesn't then it may cost the acquiring team nothing.

No. It will be a "for sure" pick for 2020(a 3rd or 4th) plus a higher pick next year if he plays(condit 2nd)

I just can't see a team giving up that sort of middling asset in case he doesn't play. I think it would work better for both sides if everything was conditional on his play. If he's good or bad, the cost to acquire him is scaled accordingly.

A trade is only finalized by the other team's medical staff. If he is healthy enough to play this year, a 3rd or 4th is ok. Heck, a 4th is what some teams give up to acquire someone pre-UFA
