For real though I think if the Islanders offered Toronto would seriously consider. It is a lot for Nylander though.

Trading a good player for a large collection of worse players is usually not a winning formula. Nylander is young, and on one of the best value contracts in the league.

All these guys are older, and not a single one of them is even close to as good as Nylander. We have no need for Ho-Sang, we have about 6 players that are his skill level. Mayfield is fine, but nothing special. Ross Johnston is nothing. Bailey is arguably paid correctly for his level of production last year, but he's only going to decline on the wrong side of 30.

From a possession and shot generation stand point, https://hockeyviz.com/player/bailejo89/NYI/1920Bailey and https://hockeyviz.com/player/johnsro94/NYI/1920Johnston are both dragging the Islanders down?

I just don't see the point in a trade like this for Toronto.

I will spare you the "are you ****ing kidding me" crap since it's not a serious post and will instead try to explain exactly why the leafs laugh at this offer.

Nylander is a first line winger who can be a good 2c when needed who is a stats darling, possession and entry wizard, net finding, underratedly strong board battling player. He is also signed to term on a contract that looks like a larger and larger steal everyday.

In exchange you are offering

a late first (not very valuable, and doesn't fit in with what the team is trying to do right now)

A bottom 4 rhd. We have plenty of bottom and middle 4 dmen who can play the right. We don't need another. What we need is a top end guy and Mayfield isn't that.

Ho sang is a bust with an attitude issue and is too old to realistically be reclaimed and hit a level where he would be of value to the leafs. On top of that he plays a position where the leafs are extremely deep.

Johnston is a 4-5 winger. Nothing there, we have plenty on the Marlies who can be called up in a pinch who I'd hazard are better.

Baily is the only quality piece given up here that the leafs might actually want, and he is a large down grade from Nylander both in production, ability, age, and contract status.

Essentially, you've given us scraps (albeit some good ones) for Nylander. Few of which the leafs would actually be interested in. That is why this is a terrible trade proposal that doesn't even come close to landing Nylander.

Basically you are trying to trade $50 worth of cut up pennies for a crisp $100 bill. It doesn't work.

Actually it's not a bad value. Only thing is really has Bailey peaked and on the decline? For that reason the Leafs decline.
There should be a" trade pact" on CapFriendly. Isle fans promise not to include Ho-Sang in any trades and Leaf fans promise not include Bracco in any trades.

Honestly bellows for nylander straight up would be a decent trade. Yeah we’re trading away an elite goal scorer on a ppg pace, but nylander is on a reasonable contract

Normally, this is absolutely correct. On the other hand, I see a case for this. I’m not necessarily saying it’s good for the leafs. Nylander is having a fantastic bounce back season. The leafs are a cap strapped, top heavy, defensively challenged team. If any team is in a position to sacrifice some quality for quantity, it’s them. Bailey replaces Nylander, and he and JT get back to their old ways, one would hope. Mayfield is instantly the leafs top pair right side d man. Is that over his head? Ya, probably, but he would be the best option. Then they get a significant trade asset in the first to go out there and actually get that true top pair d man. Or top four. Whatever.

I think where this would get really interesting, is if you ditch ho-sang, and add ceci.

You say it's a cap strapped team and then you want them to move a $6.9M player and take back roughly $8.5M in salary and loss the clear cut best player in the deal, for no upgrades whatsoever?

Seems like a legit way to run a team.

I read your post the first time. Ceci is off the cap in 20 games (technically he's not on it now cause he's on LTIR). That doesn't save them anything when the other guys are signed longer. It adds almost $1.5M for next season and beyond for no upgrades and a substantial downgrade. Makes absolutely no sense to add cap when Toronto has to re-sign guys like Muzzin and a Rielly in the near future.

Should stick to your Bruins. Cause your Leafs fan trolling doesn't do anything.

How does that add cap? That doesn’t add cap.
My proposal:
Leafs take on: 7.45
Leafs jettison: 11.4

Take on cap?

Sure, it does add a smidge to the cap next year, but you’re not going to do better than Mayfield at 1.45.

It's pretty bad value, It's the inclusion of Mayfield that makes it bad value, Mayfield is 6/7 D sure on a nice contract for a long time, his defensive numbers are decent on a team that plays defensive system, in TO he'd be so exposed it would be ridiculous. Now if the Islanders were truly truly interested in aquiring Nylander it is Pulock that is brought up with out that player in the conversation there is no conversation

Read what I said. I said it adds cap next season when the Leafs need to re-sign guys. Ceci wouldn't affect that because he's a free agent this summer. He also doesn't affect the cap right now because he's on LTIR.

Next season:
TOR acquires:
Bailey - $5M
Mayfield - $1.45M
Johnston - $1M
Ho Sang - $874K (RFA this summer, have to assume he doesn't sign for less than he makes now)
Leafs won't trade Nylander for AHL players so would assume Johnston and Ho-Sang are on the NHL team and count towards the cap.

Leafs send out:
Nylander - $6.96M

That's: $8.324M - $6.96M = $1.364M of California space added to the Leafs roster for no upgrades.
That could be the difference between offering Rielly $6.7M or the $8M he's likely to get. & anyone in the world that knows anything about hockey would much rather have Nylander and Rielly over Bailey, Ho-Sang, Mayfield, and Johnston.

I think this clearly makes the point that it makes no sense for Toronto to do thIs. It makes the roster significant weaker and doesn't allow for future flexibility.

The time to get Nylander was last off season when every Leafs fan had a Nylander for Parayko trade on the board. That ship has sailed.

Remember calling Nylander greedy for wanting 7 mil a year??? May be the best deal in the league...

I don't know, do the Isles really want to create a Bailey-Tavares-Marner line? Because that sounds beyond scary to me.
