Description
The Tony DeAngelo one year deal is going to be a huge mistake. If he continues to play like he did last night, he will deserve a BIG contract

Guess the Rangers had no choice on a long term contract due to their cap situation. The mistake, for cap purposes, was Shatternkirk or not trading Kreider or Namestinkov. I wouldn't put that much credence in pre season games on players value. But it is a nice situation to have if DeAngelo steps up to be a 7m player.

Just looking at the roster you constructed. If some of Perforrmance Bonuses need to paid, there would be a carryover...more problems.

While he did look impressive.. inconsistencies has been an issue for him so we’ll have to see after this season

It still baffles me that there wasn't a market for Strome or Namestnikov, but if we want to trace to the root cause it's the twin Spooner/Namestnikov contracts

Being a Jersey boy, I betcha. Deangelo would just love to be long time Ranger. Certainly he is going to be given every opportunity to succeed the season. Look at the Rangers defence, lots of young talented guys.

Shattenkirk's $4.6M cap hit increase next year really screws the Rangers. Girardi's $2.5M cap drop helps eat a lot of that... but overall $7.5M of dead cap space due to buyouts shows how much jumping into big contracts with guys can bite you HARD.

Not a bad problem to have: a pending RFA worthy of a big contract...just hope they make the right decision of who to keep and who to move between ADA and Nils...in any case, if both have big years ADA will be due to get paid...Nils the same a year or 2 later...whichever player they decide to move on from they should be able to get a nice return- maybe another pick or two in the deep 2020 draft?

Regarding the performance bonuses...again- if the Rangers are so "Lucky" to be on the hook to pay any, they are paid as earned...I believe the 1st would be making the all star team....so they have time to work on that...depending on how the season unfolds, movement of one (or a few) of Kreider, Names, Strome,and/or Fast...once the trade market opens back up for business- should give the needed wiggle room under this year's cap.

I'm pretty sure there's a handshake agreement in place for Jan 1st for him to sign an extension.

Yes jumping into big contracts can hurt, but they can also help big time. Imagine if Barkov, Pastrnak or MacKinnon had taken a bridge deal and now needed to be paid big bucks. All 3 of those teams would be hurting just as much

Highly doubt he will be getting a 7 yr/49 mil contract extension with NYR, unless he is a Norris finalist (highly unlikely)! It is definitely very encouraging that he played well last night and the end of last season. If he keeps up the good work, then maybe he gets a nice bridge deal (4M AAV) or gets shipped out @ trade deadline while his stock is high. No reason to give him a huge contract extension yet nor is he worth it. Hopefully, he brings the good work ethic/attitude and has a CONSISTENT season!

I still can't believe that a team hurting for an RD didn't trade sign him to a 2-3 million dollar offersheet.

I was happy when the cap didn't go up as much as everyone expected because I figured the Rangers could take advantage of teams looking to dump salary. Then we traded for Trouba and signed Panarin and the tables were turned. I bet one of Namestikov or Strome could have been dumped if we retained and other teams had an extra 1-1.5 mill.

signing deangleo long term could be a huge mistake. the rangers have prospect depth in the right side coming up in the next couple of seasons. the 1 year 925 deal was a great deal for the team. they get to see how fox develops this season. if fox shows he will be a top 4 d in the league one day, which i strongly feel he will then Deangelo isn't going to be on this team come this time next season. trouba and fox could end up taking Deangelo pp time from him. with players like keane and lundvist in the pipe line makes Deangelo very moveable unless he has a breakout season.

my opinion is by the end of the season fox will move above deangelo on the pp2 team and end up averaging more min a game then deangelo.
