Why should Ceci be bad? But if he is, no team is trading for his 4.5m cap hit. Leafs don't really have NHL good or NHL ready replacements even if Ceci isn't performing to NHL standards.

That's exactly the thing. If he's bad, no one will take him unless there's a sweetener thrown in because the Leafs can't afford having a $4.5m player not producing. It'll be Marleau all over.

You're getting in too deep here. I wasn't saying they should or will trade him if he's bad, I was just implying it won't be easy or cheap to get rid of him if they decide to, that's all.

Only way I see him traded and not costing them much extra is if his salary is part of a larger deal for a non-playoff bound team to send them a rental defenseman. That would make sense, but otherwise I agree with your assessment. Trades out of desperation rarely end well.
