Description
With the pieces they had, their blue line, the amount of potential that’s been completely lost this season, all because of cap issues. The last thing you want is to tear down your team due to cap issues BEFORE ANY CUP RUN. That’s the trend most teams are going towards with the amount of money these rfas are begging for. So I’m cool with Point not playing the first half of the season. Make him sit out if he’s not going to sign. Next season no matter what we losing pieces with vasys new contract kicking in and with Cirelli and sergy needing new ones. We didn’t win a cup yet and already we gonna start trading away people for young guys or lower cap hit guys. I don’t want Point for 9 or 8, he’s just got 1 season of superstar like success. We can’t trade him cause we not getting anything close back. I think Point will sign in December if we don’t change our offer stance. So start the season without him

so lets all get your thinking right here.
You think the team is going backwards no matter what next season, and instead of taking the last best shot you would have had, you would sit Point so he can come back out of it like Nylander did last year and totally ruin any chance at all of winning a cup this year.

Brilliant. Sounds great.
Signed,
Rest of the NHL.

Huh?

Byfuglien is retiring, nothing to do with cap there.
Trouba wanted out, nothing to do with cap. Their hand was forced.
Chiarot isn't a top 4 dman so in hindsight I think most would let him go at 3.5M (Except, of course, for MB)
Myers signed a huge deal that most agree shouldn't be looking good in years 4-5-6. In hindsight they may have kept him but hindsight is always 20/20....

Laine is an RFA. He's not going anywhere. Just like with Marner, the situation can change overnight and more than likely will. Remember no games have actually been played yet. Both sides are just playing chicken.
Connor is an RFA. He's not going anywhere. He'll get signed soon enough. Probably waiting on Laine/Chevy a little here. limbo until it gets settled.

I get the reference your making and it is a valid concern for every team but Im not sure Winnipeg is the example of how not go about things. Buff retiring, Trouba wanting out, Two vet dman leaving in free agency, I think WPG can be guilty of not catching a break this year more than anything.....

Want to see a team that is an example of how not to run a team cap wise? 16-17 Detroit Red Wings...... Highest cap in the league. Average age of the team over 30. Finished bottom 6 in the league that year.

if the player sits out his cap hit is pro-rated (nylander had a 10 mil cap hit 1st year on a 6 mil contract) if point signs for 8 or 9 that will be like 12-13 mil pro rated hit for yr 1, tampa doesn't have space to accommodate that. they need him to sign before the season starts

Tampa has cap problems this year but it seems like a third of NHL does, and some of those teams aren't contenders. Tampa is is near impossible situation next year with the 6m increase in Valieslki's deal. Plus those NTC and even the M NTCs are really impossible to move.
As canucksFan53 illustrated above....the cap gets worse this season if Point misses any regular season between Oct 1 and Dec1. Certainly the unsigned players are using that fact as negotiating leverage.

The M-NTC's for next year, namely Killorn will not be impossible to move and unfortunately will have to be moved to make Tampa's cap work. It also doesn't matter when before Dec. 1 Point signs, at least in regards to the cap hit. It is not prorated in the way you think with Nylander. Because of the time he missed, the value was 10+ last year for the time he actually played, but his cap hit was still prorated to the 6.96 that the contract was worth. There have been multiple reports on this, some from Capfriendly itself. Point sitting hurts in other areas, but dues not negatively impact the cap for this year.

To be more clear, here is what I am referring to regarding the Nylander situation and signing after the season starts-Cap hit is calculated daily. Nylander took up 6.96 of cap space for the season, but since he only had 2/3's of the season to accumulate it the daily hit was that of a 10m player.

I sure would like know tthe teams that Killorn can/will be traded to. 99% chance he isn't going to a non contender that doesn't has cap. Good teams don't have the cap for and certainly if they traded for him it would be in an exchange of cap, which doesn't help Tampa's cap situation. If Killorn or any player that 15 trade list, just list the teams that have no cap available to take him, wouldn't want to help Tampa, just don't need his services at that cap hit. It's a pretty easy list. Even if there is a team, imagine the leverage that have in trade negotiations, it's three years of cap, not just one year.

this is the same scare the leafs had with Marner. they needed to sign him before the season started because of this pro rated hit for missing games, Nylander didnt make 10 mil in the first year of his deal but because he signed so late there was a 10 mil hit to the CAP even though the AAV was 6.96, TOR could handle it at the time because they were so far below the cap. the same would have happened if Marner held out but TOR could afford it this time. same will happen with Laine, Rantanen, Point, Connor. TBL, WPG cannot accomodate the pro rated cap hit. COL may be able to afford the pro rated hit but they can't afford rantanen to sit out for 1/3 of the season

His accumulated and projected hit are still only 6.96, which is the number that matters.

Prior to signing Nylander today, the #Leafs were projected to have the 3rd lowest cap hit this season at $67M

Now with him signed, and having a 10.2M cap hit for this season, they in the middle of the pack at 12th lowest and a projected cap hit of $74M (10.2 pro-rates to $6.96M)

6:42 PM - Dec 1, 2018

Notice that the leafs total cap hit jumped from $67 million to $74 million after Nylander signed. A difference of 7 million, not 10.2
