Kucherov signed for more than stamkos becasue he was better than stamkos, pastrnak was not going to sign for more than Bergeron. it's the new age of paying, players want to cash in imediately meaning older guys going into their 30's that thought they would get the big deals later won't get them as teams will be maxed out on young guys

The problem isn't necessarily the money, it is the fact that he is turning down absurd overpayments because he is on some personal vendetta to the point that they are worried about giving Matthews the c in case it affects the negotiations. Marner will most likely sign a deal that works for both sides before the season starts. It won’t be a great contract but it will work. Matthews will get that C and the leafs will get on the road to victory and we can all find something new to fear/complain about.
