Team with fair contracts and no trades 465m over

Description
So 4.65 m over

Many will say I'm undercalling marner. But I think it's fair.

Johnsson being older than Kapanen takes a 4 year contract. Kapanen takes less for a bridge to get a bigger contract when he's johnssons age.

Oz gets a million as I think he leaves with less. Rosen is called up.

So I'm hopeful the cap is a little higher than expected and/or the players use the 5% riser they can use. Then we have to shave 3ish million

Actually I think this is very reasonable. Now a retired/traded Marleau saves 5,3m, so. Leafs are cap compliant. If Marleau doesn't retire...... how to lose 4.6m plus replace cost so it about 5.6m that has to be traded for no money in return? My choice....see top right of your roster.

Or you could trade Brown and Zaitsev (or, less happily but probably more favorably, Kadri).

OK lets look at the Zaitsev and Brown.... That totals 6.6m. The two replacement a 1m each, so the Leafs right at the 83m (with this posted lineup). My biggest issue though, who is this 1m Dman that can play big minutes in Zaitsev's absence. I' have yet to see a post that makes sense "on the ice" for the Leafs. I'm OK with Reilly,Dermot, Rosen, Muzzin as starters.....then who are the next two and the 7th man, if Zaitsev is traded?

I still prefer expensiver Nylander with his career on the rise over aging Kadri, who will start to decline proly.....

About OP.....i believe TML cant afford Johnsson and Kapanen on longer than 1-2 years bridges cause of cap issues next season....

Also current trend Dubarelli is setting will make Marners contract with the amount given 5 years one

Longer contract will bring higher $$, not going thru Cap....so think again....

Yep, I like that even better. Trade Kadri and Brown....thats 6.6m gone and two 1m replacement, so the Leafs are right at 83m Nylander moves to centre. So the right wingers would be Marner, Kappy then ???? Moore? Ennis? Bracco? Engall. At least the Leafs do have (hopefully) NHL wingers who can fill in.

Kappy won't get more 3.6 as a leaf, any more Leafs will force 4.2 offersheet.

Bracco defenitelly showing signs he should get a probe next season, he delivered even with Muller being IR....

I think you "cheated" by taking on more cap which short changes the salaries you should be paying for other Leafs players. My argument was/is, the Leafs have to clear 6.6m in a trade and then have two 1m replacements, though I would like your roster if the Leafs could pull that off......getting Pesce for Kadri and signing the players at that price.

Yea, Bracco has certainly surprised this year, especially after being benched in last years playoffs. What a bonus if he could be an NHLer....especially next year. Brooks has found another gear in the second half. Maybe he's 2020/21 ready.

Glad you think it's fair but Marner and his agent don't so hate to tell, doesn't matter what you or any fan thinks. Marner and his agent said they'd accept $9M last summer, Leafs said no and now that number has raised no doubt. Likely it's North of $10M.

Not true at all. For proven players (top 50), a shorter contract will cost a team more. For unproven players, or young guys who haven't shown everything yet, it's a different story and a short term bridge deal is absolutely cheaper. Marner does not fall into this category.

Not sure where Leafs fans come up with this narrative. Why would Marner want a 1 to 3 year deal at a discount for a guy who's proven he's a top 10 winger in the league? They will take a 1 to 3 year short term deal at a premium but not a discount this is why teams lock up these types of players on longer team deals hoping for a annual discount. Make no mistake; Marner and his agent don't give two craps about the team's cap problem.

So you need to understand RFA and UFA years.

For a guy with RFA years and only RFA years, adding years will add a small amount of money.

For every UFA years in the 20s you add you have to add a large premium (they're prime earning years).

When adding UFA years after 33 or so, then adding years will drop the cap hit as those are declining years.

They can say that all they want. Until a non arbitration eligible RFA winger makes north of 7.5 million they have no keg to stand on.

His ELC has not been more impressive than Gaudreau or Tarasenko.

If all the Leafs offer is $9M, then you can pretty much take it to the bank he goes to arbitration and if that happens, the Leafs risk losing him the following season. The chips are in Marner's court the way he's playing.

it is cheaper aav on short term deals for almost everyone. It is a larger contrast with guys who are young and haven't reached full potential, and guys who are still rfa years versus ufa years. RFA years are worth objectively less than ufa years. So signing marner to a 3 year deal that doesn't include any ufa years is cheaper annually than signing him for a 7 year deal that takes up several ufa seasons. If he got a longer term contract it would have to be over 10 for it to be relatively fair. If they cant afford to sign him for 10-12million a year, that means his offer from them is going to be shorter term. Other teams could offer sheet him but offer sheets are pretty rare.

So this aav could be right, but only if its for four years instead of 7.

Marner is not eligible for arbitration. Which is my whole point. He is a first time RFA. He has 4 years of RFA left and no arbitration eligibility

Lol. Get off that Nylander trade train that you're driving. He's not being moved for a reason. You don't trade good players and get better.

But how about Babcock old reliable Roman Polak. He brings the toughness people say we need, is right handed and his stat line isn’t horrible. Problem is Dubas doesn’t want this type of guy.
