A reasonable target for an offer sheet

Équipe: 2019-20 Canadiens de Montréal
Date de création initiale: 19 sept. 2018
Publié: 19 sept. 2018
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Offer sheets to star players don't happen because the compensation is way too much. But you can go after talented secondary players on teams that are close to the cap. Like Toronto next season.

After TO signs Matthews, Marner and Nylander, they will be close to tapped out of cap space. Kapanen and Johnsson will both need new deals and could be enticed to sign an offer sheet for just over 3 million which would price them out of Toronto and cost only a 2nd round pick.

I know that offer sheets are super rare, but this might actually be within reason...

Yes but you still have to get kappy to sign it.... I would say depending on performance leafs may match on longer term. Still... offer sheets do not happen. It is a mutual respect across the league

They wouldn't be able to match if they're priced out from all their other signings....
..And they don't happen, but with Bergevin's insane moves there's no reason to see why he'd be afraid to go against the grain of gentleman's agreement with offer sheets and immediately improve on his roster

Kapanen would be a great pick up for a 2nd round pick.

And he'd get matched ... offer sheets are done unless they change something in the next CBA.

Matched? With what cap? TOR still need to sign Nylander, Matthews and Marner next summer, what cap do they sign Kapanen with?

Thats old school thinking that is so stupid. Its a business and its an option teams can use to improve their teams. If Kapanen scores 20+ goals and 40+ points he could want over 3 million and the Leafs just won't have that much space left after signing Matthews, Nylander and Marner. Its a scenario where Kapanen would likely have to settle for a one year deal for way less than his worth and then get some term the next year, or he can sign an offer sheet for a team that would be willing to give him a chance to play higher in the lineup. That is a scenario where a classy GM will just say, thanks Kap, good luck in Montreal and then make that draft pick count.

Well they better have that much or they won’t be able to sign the rest of their rfa’s lmao. I could see him using it as a bargaining chip but I’m not sure if he signs it. If he does Toronto matches and trades johnsson or maybe they let kappy go and target one of Montreal’s rfa’s. Leafs to a lot of stupid places.

Nah, if they lose one of Kapanen or Johnsson a marlie will get a chance to play.

Maybe Kapanen should score double digit points in a season before we talk about a 9+ million dollar contract.

Yes but rather than lose him to an offer sheet, Toronto could trade his rights to another team for draft pick(s) just to screw MB from getting him.

Dude, take a deep breath, this is a simple example of a hypothetical scenario. Insert any player who's scenario is the following. His team has 4 RFA's two of which will be commanding around 20 million leaving a small amount for several players. So when the big guns get their money, the other two RFA's will get squeezed. Let's say one of those RFA's is coming off a pretty good year where he scores 20+ Goals and 40+ points. That guy could expect 3 mill a season but his team won't be able to go over 2. An offersheet on that player would be possible, with much less in compensation. It doesn't have to be Kapanen. Use your imagination.

It's not like Montreal and Toronto are serious trading buddies.

Camp somehow show me and Babcock on the same strategic level ( or maybe he was protiped by Management )

https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/863115

i was claiming to put Kapanen and Johnsson to the minimum of NHL ( a bit harsh i know, was completelly bombarded by ppl ) so they wont florish to much cause they will be signing after this season

Both are in 4th line with Lindholm and already signed Hyman and Brown with Kadri in 3rd....signing of Nylander is kicking Leivo to be 5th wheel again...

for 2019/2020 I have Kapanen with Hyman's 2,25 M and Johnsson with Brown's 2,1 M both on two years bridge

if your scenario is true about Kapanen and he becomes surprisingly good, the leafs have this problem and having too many good players, yes a real problem. then Kapanen or someone will be traded and it would probably be more than a compensatory pick. if he that's good maybe it's nylander that gets traded. as soon as leafs contracts are mentioned, leaf haters come out and think the world is falling on the leafs for having too many good players

While I am a big fan of Kapanen, he isn't nearly at the level of Nylander and has a much lower ceiling. Also trading a UFA who's a depth player on the team may cost more than a 2nd rounder but it may also cost more. So then an offer sheet is the better way to get the deal done.
