Potential Fiala Trade

Quoting: LNels31

Idk if the article I was reading was right but it was saying that if a team decides to offer sheet fiala instead of trading the picks come from this years draft so for NJ fans that think they’ll just offer sheer him will still give up the #2 pick. I don’t think guerin takes a 2023 first. I keep hearing he could be targeting someone in this draft. But either way we’re going to get good compensation for Fiala even though I wish we could keep him. Give us #2 or Holtz.

That's not how an Offer Sheet works. A team can't tender an offer sheet to an RFA until the free agent signing window opens up. This would mean the 2022 draft would have already passed and that the 1st round pick moving in a Fiala offer sheet would be a 2023 pick.
Also, I think both of those are overpays for the Devils to obtain Fiala considering they are not a Fiala away from contention at this point. Giving up a #2 overall or a top prospect on an ELC who is touted as a potential high goal scorer for a pending RFA...just too high of an asking price for NJ, I think. If you can get that from another team, that's cool, but I don't think that kind of payment is on the Devils' radar.

In this specific lottery instance, Canucks wouldn’t be getting brothers since that third lottery spot doesn’t exist starting this year (meaning top five picks would go to BUF->SEA->ANA->NJD->VAN)

These trades can’t happen with that amount of retention. You can only retain on three players at a time. You’re retaining on five.
Also, your total retention has to be under 15% of the cap, meaning you max out at $12.2M this season. You’re retaining nearly $14M .
Regardless of valuation, these trades wouldn’t all be able to happen because it violates two NHL rules on retained salary transactions.

As a Devils fan, I’d probably do Hall+ for Byram. Not a chance in hell Colorado does Byram+ for Hall though, especially with an unconditional first round pick coming back in addition to Byram.

No, kind of a bad trade. It's fine value-wise, but Devils are not trading 22 year old Blackwood without another decent goalie to lean on. This would make them roll with 27 year old Domingue, and one of a heavily declining Schneider, two rookies that aren't anything special (Senn/Cormier), or a 21 year old goalie currently with a .889 at the AHL level (Korenar). Blackwood is their best young goalie right now, and I don't think the Devils move on from him without a comparable replacement for right now...Korenar does not seem to be that guy from what his stats are saying right now.

Devils pass bigly on Price.
NJ is already paying Schnieder just under $5m for the next two years while he plays in the AHL. They don't need to dump a 28 year old UFA winger (who is only counting for $6m of cap space) for a 32 year old goaltender with a cap hit north of $10m for the next 6 years. They need better goaltending, but not when it comes from a guy over 30 with a 6 year $10.5m dollar cap hit. That's asking for trouble.

NJD also says no to the first one. Maybe a year or two ago when Zacha was looking pretty weak, but he's been a bright spot and a great defensive forwards for us in the back half of last year into this year. He'll probably be our Zajac replacement.

Marner and Hall
First of all, how do you expect to pay Hall, Nurse, Bear, etc when their contracts are up while being able to have a decent enough bottom 6? Hall's going to ask for at least 10m, that's 7m more than he'd be taking up in this year's cap. and you only have 2m in space with Bear and Nurse also on expiring deals.
Second of all, why the hell would Jersey retain 50% on Hall, who already has a steal of a contract at 6m, for such an underwhelming return? Two 28 year old bottom 6 forwards (one of which who has only stuck with with a team longer than one year twice in his career), a 20 year old possible top 6 RW, and a smattering of draft picks where only one pick is higher then the 4th round and only two are higher than the 6th?
Jersey declines pretty easily and quickly on this one. That and I'm sure you'd be outbid for Hall, not to mention there will be teams that would likely not ask to retain HALF of his contract. Discussion for this trade probably starts with Nurse.

Selling high on DeAngelo and Buchnevich for Dumba and Karlsson

Quoting: Bloodykisame

zucc was traded at the deadline while krieder retains full value at the draft until year starts. Krieder is younger and provides physicality as well as speed with high top 6 offence. Pionk is a projected low top 4 most likely a 5th, but this fits nashvilles win window and we are taking on boninos cap from this standpoint I wouldnt do it if i were nyr this doesnt help us as much as it helps you. Bonino isnt a roster player he is a cap dump. also Zucc was considerably older while krieder will be in his prime for another few years.

Kreider is getting paid close to the same amount as Bonino, with Kreider counting $500k more to the cap. That's not how a cap dump works. If you want a cap dump, take on a contract like Turris who will be making a cool $6m for the next 5 seasons to provide even less than Bonino is. Or figure a deal for Subban where Nashville takes on lower salary in exchange for giving up picks. Because, right now, your "cap dump" situation has them losing a potential two first round picks and then some along with coming out with the higher cap hit of the players involved in the trade.
Not mentioning the fact that Kreider is going to be a UFA next offseason, so you're getting about 3/4 more of a season out of the trade. That doesn't make his value a 3rd line forward plus one guaranteed first round and one guaranteed second round pick along with another second rounder that could turn into yet another first rounder. That's just a lot to give up for someone like Kreider.
And as I said, it's nice that Pionk projects to be that, but he won't be that in Nashville. He'd sit behind Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, Subban, and Fabbro at this point, making him a 6/7 defenseman depending on who else the Preds have this season on defense. Preds don't need another body on defense, so Pionk adds no value to this trade unless they move Subban for cap reasons (which has been a prevailing rumor).
I'm not saying there isn't a deal to be made between Nashville and New York for a player like Kreider, but I am saying that it won't be for an overvaluation like this.
Also, it doesn't help me since I'm a Devils fan who also likes the Preds to some extent since I lived near Bridgestone Arena for a few years and caught a bunch of games :)

Selling high on DeAngelo and Buchnevich for Dumba and Karlsson
Potentially giving away Bonino, a 2nd, and TWO firsts for Kreider and the rights to Pionk? Yikes, that's an overpay!
Even Zucc with retained salary only fetched a 2nd and 3rd which became conditional firsts (Stars making it to the west finals / Zucc re-signing). Kreider is only two years younger than Zucc with a lower Pts/Gm average (0.58 vs 0.69). Not a huge difference in point production, but when you compare it to the Zucc trade where there was salary retained for a player who provided slightly more offense...there's no way you can ask for a roster player and a first straight up plus another two 2nds, let alone that turning into an extra 1st and a second.
And adding RFA rights for Pionk doesn't move the needle at all. Nashville is trying to move someone on defense like Subban due to the upcoming expansion draft and for cap reasons...plus they already have Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, and Fabbro on the back end, so along with Subban (until he's moved), Pionk would only be a 6/7 defenseman at best for them since I don't see him being better than the other 5 there.

The players oilers should not have got rid of
Devils say tough luck, laugh, and hang up the phone. What do we actually get out of sending away the league MVP and a 2nd round pick here? Another bottom-4 defenseman, a young project player that could very well fizzle out...oh...and a player who hasn't passed 10 points on the season and yet is making $6M until 2023 with a NMC?
Your bad for trading Hall in the first place, but Devils don't want the Oilers scraps in an effort to get him back. You have to offer us something we need (as in, not MORE bottom-4 defensemen, struggling prospects, or bad contracts) to even get the Devils front office to consider it.

Closest recent pick I can think of was Mikey McLeod at 12th overall too. Not to mention that initial draft position doesn't mean anything if the player doesn't seem to be living up to it. Would you trade what it would take to get a 1st overall pick for a player like Nail Yakupov? I think not.
Fun fact: Last time Devils drafted at 13th overall was in 1993 when they took Pederson.

The plan or some form of hope? Pt.1 2018-19
Devils aren't hurting for cap space, so getting rid of Zajac isn't a dire need and they can opt to just hold onto him until his contract ends if they don't like the return. There's no leverage to be had there for the Sens.
Cory is still our #1 goalie for the time being. Kinkaid played well down the stretch, but he's in his late 20's with this being his only standout year so far. Blackwood is still young, but he's still an unknown and not developing too quickly (we also had a garbage team in Bing this year, so that could have played a role). We picked up Lack again because one of our younger goalies will most likely be playing with Adirondack this year, similar to what Appleby did two or so years ago. We don't need a 37 year old Anderson in our pipeline because, right now, the gap between Schneider and our young guys is too large to pop Anderson in as a stop gap measure for a year or two and hope for the best. That would be a massive step back for us.
If anything, Bobby Ryan is negative value added to the trade due to his contract value and term (4 years @ 7.25M, compared to Zajac's 3 years @ 5.75M) vs his production over the past few years. You would have to add more going to the Devils in order for them to even consider taking on that albatross contract AND move Schneider, and adding an aging goalie and a few third rounders isn't enough to make that a worthwhile move. That trade as it stands is a massive underpayment by the Sens.

I would hardly call Hutton a "spare part". But rather than shut it down, try and make your case with a reasonable counter offer.

On the other hand, a good showing at one WC doesn't make a case for him being worth a first round pick, not to mention that pick being 8th OA. That's such a small sample size to base giving away a top-10 pick for that I don't think Chicago, a team that is starting to feel the effects of some of their aging players, would give it away just like that. I'm thinking they land Smith or Bouchard to bolster their upcoming defense corps, and either of those players at 18 years old and a max $950k ELC (who can be developed within the Hawks' own system from the start) will be more beneficial than a 25 year old Hutton making a reduced $1.4M for one year.

Deal with the Canucks -- comments welcome
I'd rather keep Maroon over Baertschi, especially at $3.5m/yr for Sven vs $1.9m/year for Maroon. We got 3G and 10A in 17 regular season games out of Maroon, and he was a proven net-front presence who was strong on the puck with us. Sven's production (even at his age) isn't really worth that extra $2m, if you're comparing him to Maroon.
Even if you go off the speed angle for him, we need that big body and presence that a player like Maroon brings. We were weak all season long and ended up getting pushed around most of the time because we had next to nobody big enough to stand up for his teammates. I also don't think Maroon would be getting overpayed too much at this point.
I do, however, think Bratt gets some AHL time if he doesn't return to form at training camp, leaving a winger slot open. I also think Speers will join him down there unless he pulls a Jesper Bratt this year and surprises everyone. On the defense, I think Santini stays down in the AHL unless we can move LJ or Greene. I just don't see us carrying eight defensemen.

Devils Get Some Offense and Defense
So...let me get this straight...we dump one of our best defensive centers (Zajac), one of our best wingers (Palmieri), our best goalie prospect (Blackwood), one of our best young defensemen (Santini), roughly FIVE mid-to-high potential forward younger players (Zacha, McLeod, Bastian, Quenneville, Speers) all in one year? We are not in win-now mode at all, so tossing away most of our promising and prominent players is doing nothing but shooting us back to when we had no prospects worth talking about just for a few years of potential playoff races.
By the way, no way we drop Palms, Greene, AND a first rounder for a pending UFA who is not guaranteed to sign with us. That's a total waste of assets. I also don't think Vegas gives up Neal that easily considering where they are in the standings with him among their leading scorers. Finally, Bastian (totally unproven in the NHL and not a high-end prospect) and Lappin (a 25 year old with the stats of an AHL mainstay) aren't even worth a first round pick by itself, so I have no idea why Pittsburgh would send a first and a third for them.

Rangers
The Devils have never traded with the Rangers before, and I hate to burst your bubble, but that's not going to change now. Especially not for that return considering we'd be sending Kovalchuk to a division rival.
No way the Devils want Pirri (he brings very minimal offence, maxing out with a pair of 24pt seasons 2/3 years ago) plus Rick Nash's $7.8m contract in-full for a season (even if he does bring some offense, he's not nearly worth $7.8m or worth trading Kovalchuk for). This doesn't help the Devils at all and only really benefits the Rangers.
Got to bring more to the table than a slumping bottom 6 forward and an overpaid aging winger in decline to even start a discussion for us to move Kovalchuk to a division rival.
