The plan or some form of hope? Pt.1 2018-19

Description
Duchene signs extension = 8 years 7.25 aav
Dzignel signs extension = 3 years 3.50 aav
Karlsson signs extension = 8 years 10.5 aav
Stone signs extension = 8 years 7.25 aav

The Bobby Ryan trade, I think, is the most unrealistic one of the bunch. Both Zajac and Schneider would need to waive their NTC's to come to Ottawa.

I think Hjalmarsson would waive to come to Ottawa to play with Karlsson. Top minutes every night and is still relatively young. Might need to change a few things around in order to get the value right.

Smith to Anaheim makes sense in my mind. With Kesler on the LTIR, they could use someone with a similar play style and grit.

With an injection of youth coming from the minors, Ottawa has a shot at not being terrible this year. Or at least not in lottery territory.

Tbh not a fan of the last one. I love Hjalmarsson but I think that Boedker will surprise many when given the minutes (along with his chemistry with Duchene), and although it was just 10 games or something Wolanin is NHL ready, likely in our top 4 by the end of the year. All for the other ones though.

Honestly if we're trading Bobby, the Lucic swap seems the most realistic.

First, assassinate Melnyk-If you don't, Karlsson is out the door.
Second, I like the Ducks trade- Probably hurts capwise though since they'll want to resign Silfverberg and a couple of other guys, and they run on an internal cap.
Third, Zajac's contract never made sense to me, but they seem to love him in New Jersey, and Schneider moving right now would mean that they're selling super low on him-Doubt they move him for another bad contract, an old goalie, a "meh" prospect, and two 3rd's.
Fourth, I'd probably agree with parts of what @MelnykOut said about Wolanin-He's pretty much NHL ready. I don't know about the top 4 thing, but getting older for the sake of grasping at any hope of a wildcard spot doesn't make a tonne of sense.

That trade with New Jersey is awful. No way NJ would give up their starting goaltender and a serviceable 3C for two years of 37 year old Craig Anderson, four years of Bobby Ryan at over $7 million, a 10 point AHL goon, and a measly two 3rd round picks.

It is probably too steep a price to pay for Hjalmarsson. I considered doing a Harpur + Boedker + 5th but thought it wasn't enough. With Formenton and Tkachuk coming up in the future, it makes Boedker a little less useful on that left side.

Lucic has too many signing bonuses attached to his contract, in fact a lot more of them than Ryan's. It's the reason why Ottawa got Brassard for Zibanejad and added a 2nd round pick to pay the signing bonuses for Brassard. It's the reason why Melnyk wants to attach Ryan to a Karlsson package... Cap hit for Brassard was 5 mil but Ottawa was only on the books for 3 mil paid out throughout the year instead of one lump sum. Zajac has zero and Schneider has zero. Plus, Ottawa is in need a of a new #1 goaltender that can play for the next couple of years while Gustavsson develops.

Fair enough. I thought Schneider was on his way out due to Kinkaids play last year and them picking up Lack along with the development of Blackwood. Would a 2nd, two thirds and say Filip Chlapik work better for a return?

Yeah, I know. Melnyk hinders any sort of signing but there have been rumblings of him selling so I'll take any hope I can get at this point.
It's either that or Smith goes to an up and coming contender for a similar package. Or they keep him all together.
In response to that I figured with Kinkaid and Lack along with the development of Blackwood in the minors, Schneiders time is almost up as number 1 for NJ. Was thinking of adding to the package of that being a 2nd round pick and Chlapik.
I also think its a bit of a price to pay. But, I like Hjalmarsson and his play is solid in Arizona and is still plenty serviceable. I would replace Wolanin with Harpur.

Devils aren't hurting for cap space, so getting rid of Zajac isn't a dire need and they can opt to just hold onto him until his contract ends if they don't like the return. There's no leverage to be had there for the Sens.

Cory is still our #1 goalie for the time being. Kinkaid played well down the stretch, but he's in his late 20's with this being his only standout year so far. Blackwood is still young, but he's still an unknown and not developing too quickly (we also had a garbage team in Bing this year, so that could have played a role). We picked up Lack again because one of our younger goalies will most likely be playing with Adirondack this year, similar to what Appleby did two or so years ago. We don't need a 37 year old Anderson in our pipeline because, right now, the gap between Schneider and our young guys is too large to pop Anderson in as a stop gap measure for a year or two and hope for the best. That would be a massive step back for us.

If anything, Bobby Ryan is negative value added to the trade due to his contract value and term (4 years @ 7.25M, compared to Zajac's 3 years @ 5.75M) vs his production over the past few years. You would have to add more going to the Devils in order for them to even consider taking on that albatross contract AND move Schneider, and adding an aging goalie and a few third rounders isn't enough to make that a worthwhile move. That trade as it stands is a massive underpayment by the Sens.

Thanks for that reply.

Yeah I figured there would have to be more included in the deal for Schneider. The Sens have plenty of depth down the middle so I would add Chlapik and a 2nd to the deal (which would still include two 3rds and Seiloff if not another defensive prospect) as well as a few more picks or prospects. With the info you just gave me, Ottawa would need to overpay in order to move Ryan.

The deal for Zajac would look something like this:

Zajac and a 6th round pick (2019)

for

Ryan, Chlapik and Seiloff

2019 2nd round pick (OTT) + 2019 3rd round pick (PIT) + 2020 3rd round pick (CLB)
