Devils aren't hurting for cap space, so getting rid of Zajac isn't a dire need and they can opt to just hold onto him until his contract ends if they don't like the return. There's no leverage to be had there for the Sens.
Cory is still our #1 goalie for the time being. Kinkaid played well down the stretch, but he's in his late 20's with this being his only standout year so far. Blackwood is still young, but he's still an unknown and not developing too quickly (we also had a garbage team in Bing this year, so that could have played a role). We picked up Lack again because one of our younger goalies will most likely be playing with Adirondack this year, similar to what Appleby did two or so years ago. We don't need a 37 year old Anderson in our pipeline because, right now, the gap between Schneider and our young guys is too large to pop Anderson in as a stop gap measure for a year or two and hope for the best. That would be a massive step back for us.
If anything, Bobby Ryan is negative value added to the trade due to his contract value and term (4 years @ 7.25M, compared to Zajac's 3 years @ 5.75M) vs his production over the past few years. You would have to add more going to the Devils in order for them to even consider taking on that albatross contract AND move Schneider, and adding an aging goalie and a few third rounders isn't enough to make that a worthwhile move. That trade as it stands is a massive underpayment by the Sens.
