first round exit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div><strong>LOL yeah ok. Pens are probably the favorite to escape the metro at this point. It's between them and WSH.
They got as good a chance as any to win a cup once they get out the metro.</strong>
You don't know Trotz and you don't know your own team. We all know what Trotz wants to do. He has never changed in all his time in the NHL.
He thinks gooning wins games. He's been like that well before he got to NY. He'll be like that well after he leaves NY. They lack the talent in the top 9. Period. So in comes a heavy does of your 4th line to "win" games. We both know that's what is going to happen, only one of us is willing to say it out loud and the other is in denial.</div></div>
Agreed. A lot of people are sleeping on pit just like they did to start 2015/16. Pens got off to an awful start in 2015/16, had a coaching change, then started to peak at the right time and headed into the playoffs hot with low expectations as most people pegged pit as a second round exit best case scenario. Sound familiar? Not saying they’re a favourite to win the cup, but I see an awful lot of similarities between the two teams. Especially if pens get healthy and are able to roll all 4 lines.

unrealistic Pens trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>Massive optimism here. And huge homer bias. Liljegren for in for 11 games when the top 3 defenceman for the Leafs were hurt and their goaltending went on a huge slide. No one looked good at that time. There isn't room this season but next year he will get the opportunity to stick. Likely as a 3rd pair guy to start but with how he's progressed on the farm, I think he has potential to be a good top 4 contributor by the time he's 25.
As for this whole Nylander vs Rust being close arguement. It's just ridiculous. He is more of a playmaker than a goal scorer which is why he has more assists than goals. Again though he done it in less games and is Four years younger. This is just silly already. We have all seen the absolute best from Rust. A good player no doubt but he is in no way ever comparable to Nylander. A point a game season of 40 goals is absolutely possible with Nylander. Compare him to Guentzal, that's a hell of a lot closer than Rust. I am fully aware this is going to trigger you guys.</div></div>
Yes you have huge Homer bias. That’s evident lol. Liljegren will possibly turn into a solid top 4 by age 25. Marino did that by age 22. To sit there and say nylander is better than rust because he is ahead of rust in trajectory then say Liljegren and Marino are the same even though Marino is miles ahead of Liljegren in trajectory is nonsense. The fact of the matter is that contending teams go based on what is the current status. Could nylander in a few years be better than he is now...sure. Is it possible this is the best of nylander too...sure. If the pens are rebuilding then this absolutely makes more sense for pittsburgh. If Rust had term I’d say this makes even more sense for the leafs. The only reason I think the leafs decline is because rust is going to want a raise and the leafs are cap strapped. I would bet leafs would take the massive upgrade in defense (especially considering their past 5 games and history) over a minor upgrade in offense.

unrealistic Pens trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>Marino is fine, he's doesn't strike me as anything overly special just a solid NHL defenceman. A 21 year defenceman isn't a bust, especially since he's a top pairing guy showing really good progression on the far as their top defenceman. He's going to be a good player down the road. This whole Rust is close to Nylander idea is ridiculous. He's 28 and had a good year last year and is doing good this year. He's 28 though, last year is the best you are evey going to get out of him. Nylander is just entering his prime. And he's flat out better. The only way to say this favors TO is if you believe Marino is a future number 1 which is a huge stretch. He's similar to what I see Liljegren becoming which is a very good top 4 complimentary piece. A TJ Brodie if you will. Nothing all that special offensively but solid defensively. That isn't a bust. Typical fan bias here. "But rust had 27 goals last year after being a 3rd liner for his entire career prior". Nylander is better anyone who isn't loving their own player unconditionally knows this.</div></div>
Again no one here has denied that nylander is a better player than rust. What we are saying is that they are pretty close. They have played a similar amount of games and Nylander on has a 49 point advantage (4 goal advantage). It’s a fact that rust has played a bottom 6 role for a good majority of his career. He also plays the PK and a defensive role. Which is why it makes him close to Nylander. Marino is proven, Liljegren isn’t. We’ve heard the past couple years that Liljegren was going to be up and yet isn’t. I didn’t say he was a bust. I said he is close to being one. He hasn’t done squat in the nhl. He played 11 games last year in a sheltered role and looked less than impressive. Hence why he isn’t up now. It doesn’t matter what you see Liljegren as. Clearly no one else sees him as that. He may be a bottom pair dman with the potential to be a 2nd pair if he figures it out. Marino is a 2nd pair dman with the potential to be number 1. Actually likely to be a number 1. That’s hardly similar to Liljegren’s trajectory. The value between rust and Nylander isn’t Marino. That’s way too much.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>Marino isn't looking all that special this season. Liljegren looks good on the farm and Nylander has more even strength points than Rust and is 4 years younger and has done it in less games. Once again, the difference between Nylander and Rust isn't Marino, the difference between Nylander and both of these assets is still more. Take Liljegren out and it's still not fair. Marino is a bottom 4 defender. Nylander is a top line play driver. Rust is a depth forward. Liljegren is a highly touted RHD who is 21.</div></div>
Obviously you repeat what the moronic trolls post and have a clear bias to toronto. Marino played the majority of the season with Matheson or on his off handed side. Since being paired back with MP, he has been playing just as good, if not better than last year. Liljegren hasn’t done squat and is close to being a bust. I don’t see a future outside a bottom pairing Dman. Marino is a top 4 dman and likely going to be a top pair dman in a couple years. Marino is light years better than Liljegren. Ask 31 gm’s right now who they’d rather have and I can guarantee all 31 would say Marino. Nylander is better than Rust but they are still close. This easily favors the leafs.

Hall Extension amp DeBrusk Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>no one knows that. Which is what I'm trying to tell you.
You got kids who have missed a whole year of development and you want to compare them to kids that didn't.
Like lay the hell of them. You along with every NHL club out there, does not know what they have in this draft. That is the best that can be said.
You won't be able to judge this draft for some time. Which tends to be true with all drafts but this one particularly because their year -1 was taken from them.</div></div>
I think we will see lots of surprises in this Draft down the road. Teams will harvest top talent throughout. I personally believe Detroit will definitely do that with 12 picks overall and 7 in rounds 1-3. Even in a normal Draft I think DeBrusk will fetch a mid to late first round pick plus maybe a third. I remember seeing a guy like Ryan Reaves get a late first at the Draft where teams mostly know what they have in the board in the moment vs making the deal in season when they have less of an idea.

I don’t get what all these pens fans infatuation with Virtanen are. All while thinking guys like MP and Zucker suck. Virtanen is pretty bad. Zucker only gets a bad rap cause he was on a line with Malkin early in the season who literally brought EVERYONE that was on his line down. That includes players like Bryan Rust too. It wasn’t until about 10-15 games before getting injured did Malkin actually find his game. Zucker has been solid since coming back from his injury.

Next Year
The pens will not expose MP and protect Matheson. I repeat, the pens will NOT expose MP and protect Matheson. Here are the reasons...Matheson’s contract is already protecting Matheson, MP is better, MP is younger, MP is on a better contract. If Seattle wants to select Matheson, by all means the pens would be happy to let it happen. They are in no way going to let their most valuable tradable roster asset to be taken for absolutely nothing. That’s absolutely terrible asset management and pens fans need to stop with this nonsense because they need a whipping boy and MP seems to be it. No offense but I mean the goal is to be realistic and it’s in no way realistic to thing the pens (who only have 3 defensemen worth protecting) are going to leave 1 exposed for Seattle and protect an absolute cap dump or a depth defensemen instead. If POJ is ready to make the jump next year, the pens will protect MP and trade him at the draft to get assets and make the team better.

And that’s this year considering malkin’s rough start. Every other year of malkins career he’d be by far the best panther. Even at his age I’m willing to trust the large sample size of never being under a PPG that malkin is still AT WORST a PPG centre, which is better than practically your whole team

Expansion draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>there is a very strong argument though that he gets more help than anyone in the whole league to hit those numbers. On top of it, there is an additional argument that past performance does not guarantee future results. In 4 years will Ov be a 40+ goal scorer?
Because you are paying him to be.
So yeah he nets 40+ goal a season, but he's clearly got declining play. He hasn't had a FF above 50% since 15-16.
only 1 x in the past 5 years a corsi over 50%.
Last year was the first time in the last 6 years or something he finished a - player on the ice in 5v5 play.
So as much as he scores goals still, there is a reality that you are not getting a 10.5 mil x 4 player here.
That would be like the penguins saying they should pay Malkin 9.5 again when his contract ends. I like the guy and all but he's not worth 9.5. Even if he's still performing.
At some point you have to make the best decisions to win. The reality is at 36, he should be making a lot less than 10.5. Not only to bring in help to win, but because things are clearly in decline.
It's not like there aren't other guys in the league at 40 goal paces making far less. Pasta and Jake in this new metro division alone meet that and they are in the 6 range.
Now you can say they weren't UFAs, but I counter with they aren't 36 years old either.</div></div>
Penguins need to sign Malkin if they want to keep their window open. Hes bonified superstar and i doubt they let him walk. he will likely ask for similar money and get it... that imo. Jake signed a very friendly deal and PAsta wasnt who he is today when he signed that deal. idk i wish his deal would be 8m but its unlikely

WSH has some talent in their youth. They should play it, that's my opinion Like McM. No sense in waiting the best players are aging out.
Of course I feel the same way about the penguins looking at Poulin sitting there knowing he could probably make the jump if they gave him the chance. At least for the 7 games or whatever the hell it is this year. They ain't got **** to lose doing it. Everything to gain on closing windows.</div></div>
