Is it worth it
I don’t think that the Bs make any moves to add any kind of long term $ until Pasta and McAvoy get locked up to their next big deals. I think that’s also a large part of why they never really showed any interest in bringing Krug back. Assuming 88 and 73 get somewhere in the $18-22 mil range for their deals, there’s not a lot left over for another big $ player

Future without the current Core
I’m curious to see how many of their C prospects end up on the wing. Pool is very shallow in that department compared to other positions. Studs and Frederick come to mind. I know the team likes them in the middle ling term, but Studs especially won’t play any real minutes at C this year.
Which brings me to a question:
I know that any time an ACGM team comes out with Studs on the 4th line everyone immediately dismisses it. But hear me out: his coaches at Providence loved his 200 foot game and put him the PK1. Cassidy has already given him PK minutes in camp showing what he thinks of Studnika’s defensive game. Would giving him some time on the 4th line be such a waste of his time? If he’s going to stick in Boston this year after Pasta comes back where does he play? The top 3 lines are set at center and RW so does he spend the year in Providence again developing more at center or get more reps at the NHL level sliding up and down the line up? Also consider just how bad the 4th line was last year (on both ends of the ice). Does getting a little more skill on that line help?
Just curious to see what people think

Really shows how important that 1st line is. That roster here probably doesn’t make the playoffs

Vatanen and Athanasiou
Unless there’s a trade for a top pair LD that’s flying under the radar I think the existing roster is what the Bs start with and I’m coming to terms with it. My question is what’s the leash for guys like Zboril, Vaak, Lauzon? Even Gryz as a number 1 pairing. I know that Zboril looked great in Prov last year, but it’s a big ask to have him slot into 20 minutes a night. Same with Vaak (who has had his work ethic questioned by Cassidy). In a normal 82 game season those guys could easily get 20+ games to prove themselves. In a 56 game condensed season, that’s almost 1/2 the schedule.
So is it 15 games? 10? If Boston is 4-6-1 after the 1st couple weeks and the left side is a disaster, what’s planB? Is anyone of any value going to be available in February? How much would they have to overpay to get him?
Starting to get a little nervous is all

I think the big one was mcavoy. I just don’t see any chance he signs for 8 mill on his third deal.</div></div>
I’m very curious to see what happens with the cap long term. Friedman was talking on 31 Thoughts (about 4 minutes in) about the cap not moving much for a long time. If that’s the case I don’t see McAvoy getting 10 mil with the Bruins since Pasta will need that much as well and paying 2 guys 1/4 of your cap is a tough strategy

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>Few things here.
1. No, I’m not going to find a stat that ranks Murray lower, because i think those stats are stupid.
2. If you don’t get to see a guy play much, before you toss him a big contract and a top pair assignment, see if he’s been traded for a 5th round pick in the last few weeks? If so, maybe stop and find someone else.
3. Murray’s, “ilk,” is overpaid 3rd pair guy. I might be being a smidge overly critical here, as maybe he could find a shut down pair role with Carlo, but based on the context you’re using, Murray is trash.
4. The Bs go to internal options. Vaakanainen, Zboril, Lauzon etc. if they don’t work out, they’ll go get someone who’s better than Ryan Murray.</div></div>
Fair enough

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>This post is a very good example of how destructive the fancy stats can be.
Watch a damn hockey game. No, Murray isn’t better than Shea Theodore...are you kidding me? Do you think columbus just decided to trade a first pair d man for a 5th round pick?
So to answer my original question, no. You do not know who he is. He’s not a first pair guy. He’s not worth half of what you gave him. This is junk.</div></div>
I agree that he’s not better than Theadore, especially since Theadore seems to have made a big leap this past year. We can debate the merits of “fancy stats” and I’m sure that you could find one that ranks Murray lower. I just used what I could find.
I live in New England so I get to see Murray play the two or three times Columbus plays vs the Bruins if that. So when I want to discuss a player or include him in an ACGM team I have to look him up on the interwebs. So, again, if you have numbers that show that Murray shouldn’t be where I have him I’m willing to change my mind.
And if not Murray or someone of his ilk, where do the Bs go for LD?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>Noooo he is not. He’s never been that.</div></div>
I go by what The Athletic has him ranked as. At 5 on 5 he ranks ahead of Shea Theadore for GAR since 2017. I don’t even know what that means, but NHL front offices and pro hockey writers do. I’m not pencilling him in for a Norris or anything, but his 2 way play and zone exits are top pair comparable. Again allllll of this depends on him staying on the ice, but when healthy, he grades out at as a top 50 D. If someone has numbers that show otherwise I am open to changing my mind.

Cirelli
I know that everyone says that they want to stay where they are (Aho said the same thing last year and still signed his OS), but $6 mil is a LOT more than what TB can offer. He’s probably looking at a $4 mil x 2 year bridge deal. When was the last time you saw someone turn down a 50 percent pay raise?

I don’t hate it, but if I’m the Bs I’m not giving up a 2nd unless TB keeps a little $ (which then defeats it a little from the Lightning side).
Finally a little something new though!

Getting Cheap Out of Necessity - Worst Case
I like the way you’ve moved their RFAs. I think that’s the easiest way for TB to get under the cap and get actual assets back. It’s dangerous no doubt (just ask the Blackhawks), but it’s the path of least resistance.
I think that Cernak is probably easiest to move and could maybe even get two 2nds ala Devon Toews and Foote could get a spot on their roster

Can you say what those sources are? I found a youtube video that references a Russian twitter account as the only ones reporting that.
And what’s the difference between waiving for Detroit vs waiving for NJ? The Devils have a roster that is probably closer to contending than the Red Wings. Personally, I’d rather just stay on the Lightning then go to any of the teams that have the cap space to take the contract.

It’s either going to take some real outside the box moves or some team doing something really stupid if TB wants to get anything even close to fair value in any trade. Everyone knows that they have to clear a ton of salary and the teams with cap space at this point are closer to rebuilding than contending so they’ll want either high picks, top prospects or young rfa types like Cernak. Either way I want SOMETHING to happen soon

I wouldn’t be surprised if to start the year the left side is as fluid during games as it might be between games where MCAvoy and Carlo get extended shifts and the other 4 dmen sort of rotate through with Clifton maybe playing both sides. Similar to what teams do during the playoffs at times.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DiehardRedWingsFan58</b></div><div>Basically the cost to take on Tyler Johnson's contract, Would be a 2021 1st round pick plus a 2022 3rd round pick plus one of Katchouk/Foote/Raddysh or ABB in other words extremely expensive for Julien BriseBois to cut him loose.</div></div>
Teams like DET and OTT that have some cap room but are not competing in the next couple years are going to want huge incentives of picks and prospects to take a big $ contract. Even a guy like Killorn whose deal is a little easier on the wallet will have to be packaged if it’s to a non contender. Why spend money to finish 3 spots out of the playoffs if it helps to finish near the bottom, acquire better picks, develop younger players and preserve cap space?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DiehardRedWingsFan58</b></div><div>There's absolutely noway either Cirelli or Sergachev are signing for $3 million each, I see Cirelli coming in at slightly over $4 million and Sergachev signing the McAvoy deal 3 x $4.9M more or less.</div></div>
The Bruins offer a good look at what TB can expect to pay with their 3 RFAs (and I’m pissed that I didn’t think of it earlier). McAvoy-Sergachev is a perfect one, DeBrusk-Cirelli, and Carlo-Cernak. All bridge deals and at a number that both sides were happy with. Cernak might not get quite Carlo’s but close and Cirelli might get a touch more than DeBrusk so it washes out. Add it up and it’s about $11.5 mil for a team that’s already at the cap.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>Giving a 31 year old the first line minutes, and playing John Moore in the top four is letting the kids have the chance? Your lineup is in direct contradiction of your description.</div></div>
It was more of a roster post than a line up post, but yes, the point would be to have guys like Studs, Zboril, Senyshyn, etc get actual minutes so that they can see what they can do.
Come regular season I think that unless one of the kids takes it away or Lauzon gets more consistent, that 2nd LD is probably Moore’s to start. A short leash to be sure, but coaches usually lean toward veterans.
