Dermott coming back or not does not effect the number of players the team can roster. Hyman coming back creates the problem. I agree with your comments on Hyman. People say he is overpaid for what he gives. I strongly disagree and think he is worth a lot more.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mitchell Marner (6 Years / $10,903,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheCandoRailfan</b></div><div>We all saw this coming. The Leafs are so screwed lol. The key to success is to have 20 good players, not 2 great players and 18 bums. Also, even after Horton and Clarkson go on LTIR, the Leafs will still be $2.8 Million over the cap. LOL. Paying Kessel $1.2 Million per year in retained salary not helping either lol (I know that was before Dubas was the GM, but still).</div></div>
yeah toronto is really screwed by having all their core players locked up in their prime

Well at least you are aware. It's a terrible source. Try using comps instead. If he resigned for a long term deal, Barrie should be at or around $6.75 million AAV.

He is not even close to comparable to Matthews or Tavares who are on another level. Marner has inflated numbers from playing with JT. Matthews is best scorer in the league at even strenght since he came into the league and he missed significant time.. he is a beast. Also JT is top-10 C in the league and is good at everything.. consistently picks up production of his winger by 25-30%, which is case here as well.. Marner bridge deal for 3yrs at 7 or 6-7yr deal at max 10. It is gonna start with 9 tho.

Marleau trade Idea
How's this. Marleau moved to Toronto to be on a Cup team. Now he sees his old team San Jose possibly being Cup finalists while the Leafs haven't won a round.
Marleau agrees to your Columbus move for his one last chance at a Cup in 2020. With that free cap, Leafs improve their team and go to the Cup final in 2020.
PS. Yes you can buyout Marleau, but has cap hit remains the same at 6.25m due to plus 35 signing. Actually I believe you can demote Marleau to the AHL to get 1.1m in cap relief. But a NMC doesn't have to report and would still get his salary. And a NMC wouldn't have to report a team claimed him on waivers either.

Signing a Former Leaf and Trading for a Top Defenseman
Remove Johnsson from the trade. Give the 2 million from Kapanen here to Johnsson, than give the 3 million from Stralman to resign Kapanen. Than sign Babs favorite dmen Hainsey for under 2 million or call up both Duszak and Rosen.
Wait a second, did you add that extra 16'000 onto Marner's contract because Matthews got 34'000 on his contract on purpose? Both players getting their jersey # included into the price.

Sigh. Okay. Can we agree that he isn't worth his contract? That he isn't worth half is contract? That he isn't worth a quarter of his contract? Polak was a legit player on a legit contract. I don't think either the Sharks, or Marleau would be willing to do a deal, but let's say that they would.
Marleau with 50% retained and a 2nd for a 5th would be more in the neighborhood.

taxes, hometown pressure, and teammates contract means leafs kind of have to overpay him. but 9.5 is extremely reasonable. maybe it goes down by 1 mill if he's in florida or dallas, heck even vegas. look what mark stone signed for, and he's IMO a top 5 winger in the league

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>Holy overpay...</div></div>
Between him producing at a high level, having another year of control, and potentially having the Rangers retain salary, it's going to take an overpay for the Rangers to trade him.
Insider reports have the Rangers looking for deals around Kapanen.
I proposed a trade earlier today around Nylander. While I am not positive it would happen, some Leaf fans were at least open to it.
Considering all the rentals that are dominating this Deadline, a player with another year of term will demand more. Rangers should trade Kreider now. His stock will never be higher.

I wouldn't say its that high. You could probably package one of Kapanen/Sandin with a couple of picks and maybe a roster player and I imagine that would be enough.

Leafs Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>You are stupid if you think they are going to take anything less than a max deal with the term of money they are going to want.</div></div>
... There have been multiple reports by Elliotte Friedman and Nick Kypreos that say the Leafs are currently in serious talks with Matthews about a 5 or 6 year deal. Which makes sense because it buys out less years of his UFA status, so it helps the Leafs cap situation now. Then when that deal expires, Tavares will come off the cap and the cap will have risen so Matthews can get paid more in his prime on a long term 8 year deal. So who sounds stupid now bud?

Leafs Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>It's not gonna matter it's a long-term contract it's 5-6-7 or 8 Year deals. It's not gonna matter. Same amount of money is going to be wanted.</div></div>
Are you stupid? 5 and 6 year deals don't take the same amount as an 8 year deal does. The reason why longer term gets more money is cause it buys out more UFA years. The less UFA years bought out, the lower the annual salary cause the player doesn't have any leverage. That's a well-known fact in negotiations and isn't new at all. On a 6 year deal, Matthews probably comes in around $11M and Marner probably between $8-$9M.. so this post is actually correct on value. Long term (8 years), Matthews comes in around $13M and Marner around $9.5M.
