I hope you are fully aware @TavaresIsALeaf where that "Barrie is looking for $8 million per year on next contract" rumor came from. That was Steve Simmons. The same guy who just said that Don Cherry will not be back on Coach's Corner. The same guy that came up with that Phil Kessel loves hot dogs ps. The same guy that was fired from TSN's The Reporters. It is really unfortunate that sites like Pro Hockey Rumor pick up such things and post them, because the truth is there is absolutely NO merit to this. Barrie's people have never provided anyone a number for a next contract. After the acquisition, Dubas asked if he was interested in an extension and Barrie's agent said they would prefer to discuss after this coming season. At no point was a number ever put forth. Steve Simmons likes to stir the put. He has absolutely no credible sources anymore.

Well at least you are aware. It's a terrible source. Try using comps instead. If he resigned for a long term deal, Barrie should be at or around $6.75 million AAV.

Yes, I am specifically looking at Ryan Ellis' new deal he just received during this past season, which was 8 years at $6.25 million AAV. Barrie is a little bit better offensively, but I would argue Ellis is better defensively. Regardless, I think Barrie gets more but doesn't quite get to $7 million.

That was out before he was in Toronto, that is another reason why he was traded. Considering karlsson just landed 11.5 barrie can easily ask for 8 and someone will pay him.

Tax-free states are not good comparables.

For Barrie to make the same Net income as Ellis in Smashville, he would have to make 8Million dollars in Toronto........ And we both agreed that Barrie is better than Ellis, so arguably he could get more than 8M............... Any other comparables?

Tax-free state or not, it shouldn't matter. Ellis could get traded tomorrow, his contract does not change. If this whole tax-free state thing were a real thing, Marner would wait until Point signed and demand whatever that is, applying the tax difference to that of Ontario. IF a Barrie extension were to happen right now, the comp would be Ellis on the low end and Hedman on the high end, and yes, I realize Florida is another income tax free state.

First, it's extremely unfair to compare Erik Karlsson to Tyson Barrie. I mean, I am sure Tyson would take that as a compliment, but for the sake of comps and salaries, that's not a logical argument. Like I said, as far as I am aware, Barrie's agent has never, not to Colorado, not to the Leafs, provided a number for an extension. Sakic may have traded him because Barrie refused to discuss extensions until after this contract was up, but that's not to be mistaken as making ridiculous demands.

$8 M for a bridge contract is already a huge overpay as it is. Kucherov's bridge was $4.5 M.

lol he's taking 3.5 mill less than karlsson plus a cap raise, when you consider that it's easy to compare the contract, and if he hits the market its only 7 years which makes it even more believable. I heard it about a week before July 1st from his cousin. Apparantly at the draft sakic told barrie he was moving since we landed byram and he wasn't moving on how much he wanted as an extension.

I guess we have our different people for information, but that's not really the point. In any negotiation, why wouldn't the player come in high? I mean, it's not like $8 million is ridiculously out-of-this-world unreasonable. The player can ask for whatever they want, but it's going to be the comps available that usually helps these negotiations along to a point that a player resigns.

Lol you think it doesn't matter??? Point @10M in Tampa gets him 1,25M more per year than Marner @10M per year in Toronto. That's the difference of a 10M dollar on an 8-year contract... so yeah... Common man... Let's not be naive and say that it "shouldn't matter". It's not a charity - exhibition 1 = Marner not willing to take a home town discount

I think Barrie's Contract will likely be compared to all the upcoming RFAs. Do you think McAvoy, Trouba, and Werenski are all taking under 7M? Not a chance!! (unless they're bridged) Which Barie obviously won't be. He's also going to have the entire NHL bidding on him. Getting something close to 8 shouldn't be an Issue

I know, i was just saying that 8 is probily the lowest number he will sign for. If kevin hayes lands a 7x7 barrie can easily land an 8. If he has a career year in toronto as well i'd expect it to go up from there

Myers - 5 years 6M AAV
Stralman - 3 years 5.5M AAV
Edler - 3 years 6M AAV
Ellis - 8 years 6.25M AAV

Will be interesting to see what Gardiner ends up at but i'd say objectively Barrie should land in the 6-7M range on any length contract.
