It's not gonna matter it's a long-term contract it's 5-6-7 or 8 Year deals. It's not gonna matter. Same amount of money is going to be wanted.

This is an unpopular opinion, I know, but what happens if the guy who's 8th in points in the NHL wants more money than the guy who's 56th? Just, like, hypothetically? Would that be fair?

For one, Centers always get more than wingers. Matthews also missed a good portion of the season also

I'm mostly just a Caps fan, but you might want to check out the contracts on long time #1C Nick Backstrom , long time 1L, Alex Ovechkin, and frequently injured guy who still somehow posts two ponts/60 each year, Andre Burakovsky.

Short-Term meaning 1, 2, or 3 years. They aren't going to accept a Long-Term Deal with a paycut. That's still a long-term contract anyway you slice it. Sorry buddy can't get away from the cap issues. Matthews won't accept anything less than 12M, Marner won't accept less than 9.5M, and Kappy won't accept less than 3M unless it's a 1 Year Deal.

Usually Centers get more but didn't Ovi get a 65 goal year before his ELC expired?

"The cap has risen every year while NBC coughs up $200 million (U.S.) annually on average to hockey-related revenue. That deal ends after the 2020-21 season, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

In a new deal, the NHL could easily double that money, if not more, independent media consultant Brad Adgate said." -From the link

That doesn't matter. They still won't take less than 12M, 9.5M, and 3M because that isn't this year, and they could doesn't mean they will.

Are you stupid? 5 and 6 year deals don't take the same amount as an 8 year deal does. The reason why longer term gets more money is cause it buys out more UFA years. The less UFA years bought out, the lower the annual salary cause the player doesn't have any leverage. That's a well-known fact in negotiations and isn't new at all. On a 6 year deal, Matthews probably comes in around $11M and Marner probably between $8-$9M.. so this post is actually correct on value. Long term (8 years), Matthews comes in around $13M and Marner around $9.5M.

What are the chances they actually take a 6 year deal??? You are just hoping you somehow can get under the cap. It's not gonna happen unless you somehow can get rid of someone.

You are stupid if you think they are going to take anything less than a max deal with the term of money they are going to want.

... There have been multiple reports by Elliotte Friedman and Nick Kypreos that say the Leafs are currently in serious talks with Matthews about a 5 or 6 year deal. Which makes sense because it buys out less years of his UFA status, so it helps the Leafs cap situation now. Then when that deal expires, Tavares will come off the cap and the cap will have risen so Matthews can get paid more in his prime on a long term 8 year deal. So who sounds stupid now bud?
