Nobody is arguing that playing in Tampa is 100% tax free, they're just pointing out we don't have state tax

But players still pay other state taxes when they play on the road

Yes, that's half the season. Still a big advantage.

Note every other player in the league gets that too so it's not really an advantage

No. Most states have state income tax.

Yes there is some not as much as some would claim. There are other factors, cost of living cheaper here then most big cities, quality of life and even if you are a star like Stamkos you can walk your dog and for the most part be left alone. The one negative is endorsements. If Stamkos was in Toronto he would have millions more in endorsement.

In talking with Point and his agent Gerry Johannson during the season, a few key points came into play. Point’s main priority is staying (and winning) in Tampa Bay, which would require him making it work in Tampa Bay’s cap structure. They’re open-minded when it comes to contract length. That doesn’t mean Point won’t look for the best deal, but there will have to be compromise on both ends to make this work long-term.

“It’s about winning, taxes, quality of life, and where you want to be,” Johannson said. “Players ultimately want to do what they want to do. I always say, ‘The best deal is not always the most money, the best deal is the best deal.”

if you're playing in a place with the state income tax (cough california) then at least 41 games are state taxed. plus all the games on the road against teams with state tax.
if you're playing in a place with NO state income tax, like tampa bay, then 41 home games are NOT state taxed. some road games will be, but some road games also will not be.

Not related but just putting this out there:
Players who play in Canadian cities get paid in USD so they get more than if you play in an American city. Weird how nobody talks about that

It is aslo quite funny how everybody always points out the State tax free zones, but nobody ever talks about the endorsement opportunities in the higher-tax markets.

That's because those are outside of their worth in hockey and the NHL.

When agents calculate potential incomes for players, it's not all about players salaries, it also factors in outside business interests (marketing, promotional opportunities, investment opportunities, etc). For top players, as much as 40% of their income doesn't come from their hockey salaries. So, living in a no state tax environment has its advantages.

But, there are other states with no income tax. Texas doesn't have a state income tax, neither does Nevada. Tennessee has a modified state income tax (flat rate on investment income, but nothing on salaries). Washington state doesn't have a state income tax as well (which means Seattle could have some advantages). Why doesn't Panarin not want to come to Dallas, Vegas, or Nashville? There is more to it than just taxes. I'm sure the weather has a lot of do with it. Imagine living on the Gulf, or the Atlantic Ocean. No major weather issues in season to deal with (doesn't snow in Florida very often), and the weather is nice for 9 months a year (as when its not nice, you could live somewhere else because its the off season).

I think the bigger issue is do player pay personal tax rates. If they do the posted personal rates posted have meaning, but if the don't then you're talking about a different tax structure.
Never hear about Blue Jays and Raptors (or players in New York or LA) demanding more money because of tax laws but somehow NHL players have this utopia in Florida.
