Marleau's family has settled in Toronto love it there. They won't move to a smaller city in Columbus.

If the goal was to win a cup, why would he waive to go to Columbus?

I know they can't buyout Marleau. He has a NMC. You must be referring to someone else

How's this. Marleau moved to Toronto to be on a Cup team. Now he sees his old team San Jose possibly being Cup finalists while the Leafs haven't won a round.
Marleau agrees to your Columbus move for his one last chance at a Cup in 2020. With that free cap, Leafs improve their team and go to the Cup final in 2020.

PS. Yes you can buyout Marleau, but has cap hit remains the same at 6.25m due to plus 35 signing. Actually I believe you can demote Marleau to the AHL to get 1.1m in cap relief. But a NMC doesn't have to report and would still get his salary. And a NMC wouldn't have to report a team claimed him on waivers either.

Good idea, Marleau go to the Marlies as a part time player/assistant coach and he still gets a chance to win a Cup (Calder). The 1 million cap relief is just enough to cover his replacement but at least the Leafs could add Sheldon Keefe to their Leaf coaching staff with Marleau getting an early start at his future after hockey job as a coach.

How's this. Marleau retires tomorrow Leafs trade his cap of 6.25m. No $$$$ implications for "NHL" team Marleau signs as a minor leaguer player/coach with the Marlies ......for 6.25m

Pretty sure Marleau doesn't have a 2 way agreement so he can't go to the AHL.

You guys are stuck with Marleau and his cap hit another year. The only way is to convince him to retire and trade his contract otherwise the Leafs and fans should focus on something more realistic like moving the contracts you will have to in order to become compliant.

Well Marleau is still iffy but I say the Leafs have to get rid of between 6.5M and 7m in net cap this season. because you have to believe Marleau is playing. Hence my belief trading Nylander for picks or prospects in the most logical move. And I don't expect a very high return either. Not a bunch of players being traded, no Zaitsev either, maybe just Nylander.

Two way agreement just determine the salary. Players with one way deals (meaning one salary wherever they play) report to the minors or they don't get paid. Of course Marleau isn't being demoted, but a NMC could be waived to the minors, (on paper only) but he doesn't have to report and he would still get his full salary.

Do you honestly think Marleau will agree to that though? There is a very low chance Marleau isn't on the team.

IMO the only way Marleau is NOT a Leaf is IF he decides to retire. And the only way he decides to retire if he thinks he "is done". I expect Marleau to a Leaf next season. Instead of of multiple trades to get to 6.8m cap reduction, I propose just Nylander gets traded. And I don't expect any meaningful Dmen addition due to cap reasons. Gardiner. Hainsey gone....Dermot out till December. Yikes.
