Gibson Trade Thoughts
I actually had an idea about this not too long ago here:
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2232203
My thought was that it's more important to get Zegras some scoring help up front than to have a goalie that by the time Anaheim will competing, Gibson will be declining anyways.

Gibson Trade Thoughts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jah1722</b></div><div>That would be an easy pass. Ducks have Dostal playing well in the AHL. Goalie prospects are a no thanks.</div></div>
Don't be set with one good goalie prospect in the pipeline. Some good competition is always good. Then whatever one develops slower you can trade for other assets - that's how a rebuild works. Although I agree I wouldn't make the focal point of the deal a goalie prospect, but I wouldn't throw one out just because a good ones in it.

Fire Bergevin
I think Bergevin has a long leash with management and it's been earned. He's constructed a roster that can play almost any style of play and he's managed the cap well. He's draft record is pretty good, and he's been winning a lot of trades by a landslide for a few years. The coaching change should help a lot. I don't think he's on the hot seat at all.
Side note: Romanov hasn't looked good in more than 1 game. Every game against Toronto he's looked out of place and he can clearly be out muscled and passed by with speed. He might need some time in the AHL to develop better before he loses all confidence.

Do we really need a top 6 forward
They don't need a top 6 guy. The reason they're looking for one is to get Tavares and Nylander going more consistently, but with Kerfoot on that line it seems to work a lot better. So what they really need is a defensive 3C to run the shutdown line that Keefe wants in the middle of Mikheyev and Hyman.
Bleuger would be the likeliest option as he'd be the cheapest. Bonino would be the perfect choice but the cost would be more and there's more cap issues to work around there. Same goes for Zajac outta New Jersey. Danault would be interesting from Montreal if they continue to slide. So there's 4 good options there. After that they need a defensively reliable 7th d-man that can come in and play Muzzin's role if he gets hurt in playoffs. I think Jordie Benn is the perfect fit for that spot.

It's not. At least you can find Matthews in his defensive end. McDavid is awful at playing defence, sorry but offence isn't everything.

Forsberg coming home
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>staytru20</b></div><div>On Samsonov, he won't have much leverage in RFA contract negotiations. He only has made two starts this year, and has an .868 SV% and a 3.36 GAA. My guess will be that he'll get a one year deal at around $1 - 1.5M and see how he performs with a full workload.
That being said, I agree on Forsberg. On top of money, it would just add another wrinkle to the expansion draft this offseason.</div></div>
I think Samsonov's leverage is more than that. All he has to say is "who else you got in net"... Caps are screwed behind him. Vanacek isn't an NHL option at this point. Lundqvist will be a UFA. So it's Samsonov's crease to lose. I think he signs for for a 2-3 year deal around $3M as a more of a future potential kinda deal.
They just don't have the money for Forsberg

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafs101</b></div><div>that was cold blooded. Killer move to do MTL fans like that, that quickly after the loss. I love it.
Seriously tho if MTL is out he'd be a great option to form a defensive 3rd line around</div></div>
100% agree with this. I also wouldn't be shocked to see them not make it this year, it really more depends on how much further they're out at the deadline if they're gonna sell off.
By all reports, Danault is on the block and it looks like it's due to contract talks stalling. Be a great addition to the Leafs and exactly what they need, plus no quarantine issue to worry about either. I'd go as high as a 1st and a guy like Nick Abruzzese, and probably a roster player to make it work.
He'd be the guy to run a shutdown line with Mikheyev and Hyman against McDavid all series. Even if Toronto makes it outta the North division playoffs, Danault helps a lot.

LeafsOilers Challenge
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilsince95</b></div><div>Again, I'm sure many teams would be super happy that you'd like to trade them RNH for Ilya Mikheyev if you were a GM. Your phone number would be really popular with 30 other GM's!
I'm not saying I disagree with you on pure talent, Holl is great this season. But 2M is still more than $1,831,417, so your proposal doesn't solve anything. Close is only relevant in horseshoes and hand grenades, not the salary cap.</div></div>
Is $2M more than a $3.75M Tyson Barrie?
& again, I guess you can't read. I said RNH wouldn't make the top 6. 3rd line is meant to be a defensive line and Mikheyev is miles better defensively than RNH.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilsince95</b></div><div>You may notice that OP was picking players to fit a 20 man roster under the cap ;). Although I know a lot of Leafs fans don't like thinking about the cap, so I understand the block on that concept for ya.
Also okay if you cut Nuge to send him to the Marlies over Ilya Mikheyev, Jimmy Vesey and co., I'm sure lots of teams would like the services of the 35th highest scoring player in the league since 2018-19.</div></div>
Ah and many Oilers fans think that scoring points is everything. Nugent-Hopkins wouldn't crack the top 6 on a Leafs/Oilers team. Mikheyev >> RNH (for a 3rd line checking role)
Also, don't worry the challenge was clear. But don't sit there and say that leaving Holl out is justified because you're an Oilers fan. Take out Bouchard and with the extra cap there's still $1,831,417 in cap space. Holl makes $2M so it's a hell of a lot closer. & you really think Holl is worse than Tyson Barrie?... yikes. No wonder Edmonton can never hold down a playoff spot.

Justin Holl not in over Bouchard is just disrespectful.
Honestly, the only guys that ever make the Leafs from the Oilers are McDavid, Draisaitl, and maybe Nurse. The rest of them can try to make the Marlies.

replace Hallander with a 3rd or a lower prospect. No reason Granlund would get that much at the deadline with the quarantine rules in place. A good trade comparable would be Gustav Nyqvist from Detroit to San Jose.
Can't see the Leafs wanting to give up a centre prospect when they're thin there as it is.

Lines post trade deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nhl_oilers</b></div><div><strong>This is one that Buffalo may accept</strong>, if Hall isn’t gonna resign. You get a second line winger, a fourth liner, and two late picks for a rental. That’s not a bad return. Who knows if Hall waives for Toronto though.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oilers_Diehard_71</b></div><div>So many things with this trade.
1. <strong>Hall Trade is fair.</strong>
2. Andersen is better than Korpisalo so I'm not sure why you would do this?
3. Arvidsson definitely costs more than a 2nd
4. Your 2.8MM over the cap</div></div>
Why am I not surprised comments like these came from Oilers fans? ... they MAY accept this? this deal is fair? ... After the deadline Hall would only be eligible for 7 games with Toronto. Ain't no way in hell anyone trades a 2nd liner on a great contract with 1st line potential even straight up for Hall. Leafs fans get ripped on for being bias, sure. But comeon, Nylander is worth far more than that.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oilers_Diehard_71</b></div><div><strong>Nylander is way over paid</strong> so you would be lucky to find someone to take that contract. Vessey is decent but there's lots of guys like him. Probably only need 1 draft pick not 2.
I don't want the Oilers to sell of for this years playoffs, so nothing. We have no issues with scoring goals.</div></div>
Another Oiler comment?! ... Nylander is overpaid when a 60 point guy is paid under $7M and has had 60 points in a season 3 times in 5 seasons in his career, but Taylor Hall who's had 60 points 3 times in 10 seasons make $8M and isn't overpaid? Comeon now. Everyone loves to bash the Leafs, sure. But at least be right about it when you do it. Geez.

What is his value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wqrrior</b></div><div>Well, he's just that then - useful to the Leafs. Vancouver is not the Leafs.
You are neglecting to consider that Virtanen had 18 goals last year and appears to be largely the product of not seeing eye to eye with his coach. I can understand you not wanting him, but this is clearly a difference of lowering one person's value and boosting the others. There's not a chance Engvall carries more value than Virtanen.</div></div>
I think the bigger issue with Virtanen is his style of play that he seems to refuse to play that made him successful last season. Virtanen's best when he uses his body to protect the puck and go get it, he just doesn't seem to be willing to do that anymore. Call it the coach or not, if a player doesn't play to his strengths no coach is gonna like him.
Personally it feels and seems like an attitude or an ego issue. VIrtanen saying "I'm gonna play my way whether it works or not". I'd throw a huge red flag up if any team was looking into him. It's kinda like Nylander who has the same issue but at least Nylander has the skill to put up points. For that reason I'd throw a 3rd round pick at Vancouver with conditions to make it a 2nd if Virtanen performs to a certain level. Otherwise I'd walk away. Could easily see Vancouver saying that's not enough and wanting to get more from a desperate team, but I don't see any contending teams jumping at him. Might be better suited for a bottom dwelling team where he can show his style of play and see what he has.

Forsberg coming home
Don't think it's smart for Washington to get in on a Forsberg type player. Besides the obvious overpayment for a guy thats never ever had a 65 point season, the finances don't add up.
Washington would have about $15M in cap space in the off-season to re-sign Ovechkin, Vrana, and Samsonov plus make additions to other areas. There's not enough money to go around when Ovechkin gets at least $10M of that space, Vrana is due for a good raise to likely $5M-$6M, and Samsonov will want a good chunk for being the teams clear starter.

Isles 2020-21
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Lol now you want to ignore the underlying numbers when it doesn’t fit your narrative. Dunn has been above average defensively for the last 3 seasons.
Actually he only had a 60% ozs% last season and that doesn’t inflate underlying numbers. Dunn has a low quality of teammates which makes it a harder role then if he were playing on the top pair starting mostly in the defensive zone. Good try though.
Can you find me any advanced stats that show Dunn having below average defensive impact over the last few years?</div></div>
Oh so now we're gonna use low quality of teammates as an example when Dermott plays with the likes of Bogosian most of the season, and a bit of Holl and Lehtonen? Seems to fit your point well.
& saying he only had last season over 60% ozone starts is just false.
2017-18: 60.8%
2018-19: 61.1%
20119-20: 57.2%
2020-21: 73.9%
So he's actually over 60% ever season and this season is over 70%. Which does inflate his numbers because of a player starts in the ozone more, there's more of a chance for offence than defence.
I'm not gonna go the whole 9 yards with you, agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Lol. That graph cracks me up. Sure you wanna debate Dunn and Dermott comparable, I don't mind. That's whatever. But Dunn is not "elite" defensively. By any stretch. You think of a guy was elite offensively and defensively that teams wouldn't have jumped at the chance to only give up a 1st (in a weak draft) for him? A lot of his numbers are inflated by the fact that he starts in the offensive zone over 70% of the time
