(CGY/NJD) - Markström for Bahl, 2025 1st (NJD)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FireFitzgerald</b></div><div>That's were I see the problem, why are the Devils pushing their chips in now? They beat the Rangers 4-3, lost to Hurricanes 4-1 last year, and missed the playoffs by 12 pts this year. If they made it to the 2nd round or ECF before losing this year with Vanecek/Schmid/ Daws playing bad again; this trade makes sense.
I know this is pessimistic but I think this will be Hall/Subban/ Gusev 2.0. Ruff took the blame for this year (like Hynes also after signing an extension) and Fitzgerald overacting in the offseason (Shero with PK/Gusev). Hopefully I am wrong.</div></div>
Be optimistic.
1. The 2019 Devils were still mostly Lou's team. Seven of the twelve top scorers on that team were leftovers from pre-Shero era.
2. Hall was actually quite good for us. If you didn't notice, he won a Hart trophy here. And his sale has led to Mercer, Siegenthaler and key pieces used in Meier and Markstrom trades.
3. Subban at time of acquisition was 11.3% of cap. Markstrom will be 4.7% of cap. (Subban, Hall, Goose were combined 25% of cap)
4. The rebuild that NJD is somewhat modeled after (the late 2000s Blackhawks) went through numerous goalies before they settled on Crawford (Lalime, Khabibulin, Huet, Niemi, Turco, Emery)...maybe Markstrom is ultimately the guy who leads us to promised land, he will make the team better.
5. Be thankful that Fitzy didn't make a rash decision at deadline when other GMs were trying to get him pony up more than what he was willing to pay.
6. We did not have to include a massive contract to acquire player.
7. Markstrom chose us as much as we chose him. Just like Timo. Its a sign that players want to be here. That is good for both quality of play...and what we pay for it. (Subban, Gusev, Hall...none of them wanted to come here at first. Gusev agreed only when we threw more money at him.)
8. We now have most of our core locked in at fixed rate for next 2-3 years...(and all of our core until team control for that period).
9. We have enough prospects coming through our system that we can continue to add each year without having 1st rounders (our core is set, we just need reinforcements or guys to fill holes).
10. We only had one home-grown late 1st round pick play for us last year (Mercer was #18 overall). We also had as regulars...two 7th rounders (Palat, Haula), two 6th rounders (Marino, Bratt)...and have seen a number of our own late picks turnout well (Sharangovich, Zetterlund, Gritsyuk, etc)
11. Among the two teams in cup finals today, neither has a 1st round pick this year (nor had one last year).
12. If we were "pushing all in" now, we would have seen 10th overall pick moved, Casey, Gritsyuk, Hameenaho, Holtz, Mercer...but they are still here (and we own 19 picks in next three drafts)
Be optimistic...good things are coming.

They are doing it now because the East is as open as it will get. This team isn't as bad as it was last year. Everything went wrong. Bad coach. Injuries galore. And goalies that couldn't stop anything. Now we got a very good coach, health is always a question no one can secure, but we got a goalie now so we can be even pushing for ECF. If we had a 25th overall pick this year, I'd have moved that as how many guys in the 20s really become game changers. We still have wingers like Filmon and Gritsyuk coming soon.

Moving On From Bahl
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FireShero</b></div><div>Bahl is 2nd on the Devils in hits, I doubt Smith resigns, Mcloed is out, and MacDermid is only playing 5 mins a night. Bahl isn't that physical but at this point its him, Bastian, and Lazar for the Devils. L Hughes, Hamilton, Marino, and Nemec aren't really physical.
Also Bahl will be 24 next year and just played 82 for the first time, you have to think he will come back better next season. It took 5 seasons after Petterson got drafted for him to play a full season, let Bahl develop.</div></div>
We do agree the team needs more hits
How long are willing to wait on Bahl? Hattakaa looks really no different

I wouldn't in this draft. Maybe a strong one like last year. Definitely strongly consider it in 2015. Just not confident a 10th overall has much better chance of being a better contributor than Pinto and it will take years to get that in the first place.

I don’t see the Sens doing it. the relationship is really strong with Pinto and they’re working out a long-term deal with him right now. 10th overall isn’t like, crazy unreasonable or anything like that, I just don’t think it makes sense for the Sens. they can have Pinto now as a young 2C, or they can Konsta Helenius at 10th overall and hope he can be a young 2C eventually

That would be dumb, the entire reason of trading for a goalie is that their 2 prospects aren't NHL ready. Why would they trade for another goalie playing in the AHL, regardless of if his potential is a bit higher or not.

Two year rentals
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FireShero</b></div><div>Just too much for me for a question mark.
Fitzgerald is starting to give me late term Lou vibes: doing trades to fix holes that just cause more holes by trading all the picks and young players. The Devils have VV, Daws, Schmid, and I guess Poulter, I'm fine at this point to see give them time and see if any of them can be the starter long term.</div></div>
I am 100% with you. The way Daws is playing, even with some expected reversion, is giving team some confidence.
If we could plug some holes using minor assets...or add a piece or two that fill longer-term needs with discounted players (like the Siegenthaler trade a couple years ago), that would be ideal.
Maybe an upgrade over Bahl at 3LD, maybe a new 3C option, maybe a goalie....if its right.
Our window is just opening

Yeah Miller does nothing for the Blues. Parayko isn’t moving and I can’t see Faulk moving with that cap hit. Third pair is Kessel’s he’s played well enough to hold that spot. No reason to pay for a player we don’t need. Tucker or Perunovich both have experience on the right side if needed as well

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FireShero</b></div><div>Montreal has Matheson, Savard, Guehle, Barron, Harris, Kovacevic, Lindstrom, and Struble in the NHL now and Xhekaj, Mailloux, Reinbacher, or even Hutson possibly ready next year. Savard possibly retires or signs a team 1-2 team friendly deal before retiring. Which leaves 12 possible (8-9 if you have doubts about Lindstrom, Struble, etc) defenders next year.
Thought was Matheson and Savard would be the veterans others spots filled by players who would be around in 2-3 years when Caufield/ Suzuki/ Slaf where more in their primes. Left Kovacevic as odd man out. Also thought he filled what the Devils needed.</div></div>
Even if we assume that Matheson and Savard wont be traded (not to say its likely they will be, but there isn't really a reason to assume they will be the veterans on the roster), Mailloux, Reinbacher and Hutson aren't ready to be penciled in as NHLers next season. Xhekaj and Struble are still waivers exempt next season and Lindstrom isn't really in any plans for the team. What Kovacevic has going for him from a Montreal POV is his cheap contract, being a right shot, has a predictable play-style and his willlingness to play any role. So even just going into next season on the basis that no D will be traded, having Matheson, Savard, Guhle, Barron, Harris, Xhekaj and Kovacevic on the NHL roster locks with opportunities for call-ups when someone struggles/is traded/is injured is probably better than trading Kovacevic for a couple of 5ths considering Montreal already has extra late round picks.

You talking a 4th and a 5th or does a 3rd need to be a part of it.</div></div>
There a big difference between Kovacevic and Zadorov situation. Zadorov is a ufa. Kovacevic make league minimum and still have a year left on is deal. Habs have over 30 pick in the next 3 drafts. Adding 5th round pick doesn’t bring much value to what they are trying to accomplish. Unless they get something they thing is really worthy in return they won’t move him. I think the starting point is a third round pick. Snything less then that the reward wouldn’t be greater then what Kovacevic brings to the team. They can keep him another year and move him for a 5th round pick the next deadline.

like this - except jj and durzi I want to see much longer term - at their age and now RFAs lock them down. dont see guentzel (will be 30yo at start of next season) as a fit for AZ for 7 years, AZ doesnt do long term till 37yo, to risky for their model.

What else can be done at this point that hasn't already been done/tried personnel wise?</div></div>
I think it’s just growing pains. Losing Graves and Severson (and now Dougie) has left us with very young, very different blueline. I’d like to add one good veteran into mix, but hopefully someone with term. I don’t think we are at the point where we should be buying high price rentals at deadline.
Next summer, if an upgrade in net is available, go for it.

Bratt Hughes Pinto<----- takes the faceoff

I mean very broadly yes but half of our tanking years did not provide any value towards the rebuild. We really weren't able to start the rebuild until 2017. We also wouldn't be here if not for the moves Fitz made, like the Siegenthaler, Marino, Toffoli, Vanecek, and Meier trades. It takes more than just a tank.

I actually think the Meier trade was an overpay, at least at the time of the trade.
Was assuming (and still kinda am) that the conditions on the 2024 pick will hit combined with Zetterlund playing out of his mind at that time, and Mukhammadulin and Okhotiuk both taking some serious strides towards becoming NHLers leads me to think that Grier did quite a good job in the return he got for a 26 year old winger with a 10m QO.
It's a quantity type of deal and the assets being dealt from the Devils are ones that they had in excess, particularly LHD prospects, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Grier walking away with 4 bonafide NHLers here, two of which could be playing regularly in their top 4 or top 6.
