Bahl isn't getting enough, and is a top 6 guy for sure....definitely over Smith. Still too much for Hellebuyck due to what he wants on the next contract, that's way too much for a rental. We aren't paying WPG for the privilege of overpaying a 31yr old goalie to keep him and wants out of WPG anyway.

I can see wanting him, but WPG doesn't have many options. Devils wanted Meier too and paid a helluvalot less than people said they would.

Can you name any trade Fitz has done where people said the Devils paid too much?

The Devils paid way too much for Meier.

Everybody also said that Winnipeg was handcuffed by Dubois wanting out and I would say they did pretty well in that deal. Teams always have 100% control of every situation. If Helle gets traded, it will be for a deal that works best for both teams.

You might be the only person to think that. None of those prospects had a real future with NJ.

Just because they didn't have a future doesn't mean that they didn't over pay. They just had the assets to make that trade.

I actually think the Meier trade was an overpay, at least at the time of the trade.
Was assuming (and still kinda am) that the conditions on the 2024 pick will hit combined with Zetterlund playing out of his mind at that time, and Mukhammadulin and Okhotiuk both taking some serious strides towards becoming NHLers leads me to think that Grier did quite a good job in the return he got for a 26 year old winger with a 10m QO.
It's a quantity type of deal and the assets being dealt from the Devils are ones that they had in excess, particularly LHD prospects, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Grier walking away with 4 bonafide NHLers here, two of which could be playing regularly in their top 4 or top 6.

The items were good, but none of them were any part of the real top 4 prospects for the Devils, for the premium player that other teams were willing to trade for. Fitz not trading Holtz, Casey, Luke Hughes, Nemec, or even some Sharks fans talked themselves into thinking Mercer would go in the deal.

Zetterlund is a bottom six forward. He was nice, but very replaceable. Muk still is a complete unknown of how he will be at the NHL level, and the 1st was going to be late, meanwhile the Devils got a 26yr old forward that wanted to be here. It has slight risk if he would agree to a deal, but Fitz has to know more than we can. We also dumped AJ in the deal, and the 2024 1st only happens if we reach the ECF, which is something every Devils fan should be willing to give up for a top line forward.

Compare that to Hellebuyck...how many teams can even be in on him that fit a venn diagram where they have assets and cap room to move for him, the need for him, and he's even willing to extend with? There were far more teams able to trade for Meier than there was for Hellebuyck right now. A 26yr old power forward with 40gs vs a 31yr old goalie with a ton of miles? I'm not saying Hellebuyck is bad, he's one of the best goalies in the league, but his value will not be increasing throughout his contract.

Casey would be better than any of the prospects we traded for Meier, similar picks, and I wouldn't even say VV has negative value like AJ did to say he's a toxic asset. I am more than happy to run with the goalies we have than mortgage the future for an aging goalie.

And the notes of "The Devils are interested..." yea...I've heard that about Josh Anderson too in the past...how's that going?

Over pay would be paying more than Meier is worth....I'd much rather have a dollar than four quarters. Zetterlund at best is a 3rd line winger. Muk MAYBE is a #4 D? And those two picks are total unknowns if they will amount to anything. I'd much rather have Meier than all those assets. Meier means more to this team now than any of those would combined.

Yeah but the same can be said from sj perspective with getting 3 firsts in value for a guy that wasn't resigning and to do it before these other deals like Dubois and DeBrincat to set the market. Yall over paid but it made sense to since meier was more important than what those pieces are in 5 years. That doesn't mean it's a bad deal but I like it more for sj to beat the market and get 3 1st in value. Your predictions are also just a guess musty could be a top six winger muk a top pair guy zetterlund could be a great middle six guy and still potential to get another late first that's some business for Meier. It makes sense for both but sj got a great deal

It felt/ feels like an overpay. If Meier helps win a cup/ scores 30+ goals a season for the next 6 years less so.

I like both trades for Meier/ Toffoli, but now prospect pool looks shallow for high-end talent and possibly no 1st for two years in a row is worrying. (11 of the 23 players on the CapFriendly roster are 1st rounders including Lazar and Smith).

Prospect pool is looking shallow on high end talent? What lol. Hughes, Nemec, Holtz, and Casey are high end talents. Gritsyuk could be in that group. Foote is looking like he'll compete for a roster spot this year. Plus guys like Clarke, Vilen, and Filmon are starting to climb towards being very good prospects. They still very clearly have a top 10 prospect pool in the league lol.

This team should not be picking in the 1st round for the foreseeable future. Their window is open, and should stay open for the next 4-5 years at a minimum if they continue to hand out fantastic contracts(outside of Palat) keeping their cap structure among the best in the league. The picks should *and probably will* continue to be moved to try to win.

Considering what Sharks fans were demanding/expecting in a Meier trade(Locked on Sharks podcast literally said one of Hughes, Nemec, or Mercer will be in the deal or the Sharks just hang up), the return ended up being pretty underwhelming.

Oh boy reactionary results for a trade deadline acquisition. People look at best player mostly and don't think what the futures are. You can cope however you want they gave up more than they had to doesn't mean they can't win the trade genius. You can overpay and still have the better side just giving up 3+ firsts for meier when other rfas are signing cheaper and cheaper to aquire (1st+). You cope tho
