2023 NHL Offseason Discussion Thread #2 - The Salepocalypse
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>TSN: At the combine it was the NHL executives and scouts doing the headhunting. You spoke to 23 teams. What was the toughest question?
Reinbacher: It's World War II and you're the captain of a boat and you have to bomb an enemy boat, but teammates are swimming in the ocean. I said, 'No, I wouldn't do it because I want to save my teammates.' I'm like, 'Look, guys, I don't do it because they are my teammates so I wouldn't kill my teammates.' They were like, 'You have to do it. It's an order.' I was like, 'No, I won't do it.' So, it was kind of not the best thing to talk about.
Bro these combine questions are getting out of hand</div></div>
That's a terrible question by someone who thinks they are smarter than they are. In an actual war there may be times when sacrificing people is justified. Drawing an analogy to a kid's loyalty to his teammates in a sport is awful for multiple reasons no matter what the team's preferred answer of the team was. You're basically setting up a 17 or 18 year old kid to fail trying to negotiate that scenario against what he perceives is your expectation as a sports team in his draft interview.
You <em>might</em> learn something useful if you took their first answer without any further prompting or follow-up and moved on. After that, you're just coaching him to give you an answer and asking him to weigh his quickly arrived at opinion vs what you're asking from him one way or another. It's a draft interview, not a deep dive psych evaluation. No matter what answer you want him to give, you're setting him up to lie to you to move on on to the next question when you start putting your finger on the scale to change his answer.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DragonRaptorHybrid</b></div><div>in terms of "not saying insanely idiotic things and getting into petty internet arguments," pretty much all of the mods were asked to be mods by Banks because they didn't say stupid things on a regular basis.
Banks also didn't really expand the moderator pool outside of him, Jarvis, and Ryan until late 2019/early 2020, largely because that was the point at which CF had gotten big enough/enough of a mess to require additional moderators. so I would personally nominate the mod team for all of their hard work in keeping this place as a pretty good overall space for hockey discussion without letting it devolve into whatever HFBoards is now. (in particular, F50marco is a pretty smart dude and was one of the first mods that Banks appointed.) I feel a little bad myself about not doing a particular lot of the duties mods are supposed to do, but I've also been sorting through my own personal problems over the last 2 years, so it's been a bit difficult to really get around to doing them, so hats off to the rest of the mods for picking up the slack.</div></div>

The fact that Mailloux didn’t want to be drafted isn’t the bad part of him being picked. It’s the fact that a person like him is allowed to be given a chance like this at all. I would have just as much of a problem with picking him if this happened 2 years from now.

Any threads/posts that are clearly racist, for example, there was a thread that was "Kane for Dumba garbage 1 for 1", etc. Go ahead and give them a 5 point infraction so they are banned for 30 days.
We should give zero tolerance to any posts such as that.

Is Tony DeAngelo the real deal?
He's a right-handed, puck-moving defenseman that can QB a PP1 unit with ease. Though he is a young, dynamic offensive defenseman, he is also poor defensively and has been noted for having attitude and on-ice issues. I'm not sure if that's continued throughout his time in New York, but that was one of the reasons two different teams traded him at such a young age. New York is more likely to trade him than extend him long-term, in my opinion, mostly because they've already got Trouba locked up long-term (and is practically unmoveable) and a younger Fox has emerged while being both better and cheaper. Both are right-handed top 4 defenseman, so NY likely doesn't want to make such a big commitment to him when they can easily supplant him. I think he's more likely to get a bridge deal, simply because he only has had a couple of seasons playing really good hockey, so it makes more sense to bridge him than commit to him long-term.
Also I'm not sure why you think he was a healthy scratch, he played 68/70 games last season.

Stats aren´t all in his case. He´s strong, big winger, can be phisical, good penalty killer and usable in the PP in front of the net. He is also a good passer and playmaker. He could become a solid bottom-6 forward on a cheap contract. I will compare him to David Kämpf from the Hawks - his stats also were not amazing in Czech extraliga, but he found a way how to be a solid 4th liner in the NHL.
Trust me, he played for HC Kometa Brno, my hometown team. I watched a lot of his games.

I honestly can't believe there's this much arguing over MP. He's an established NHL defenseman at 23. The Pens wanted him at $3,500,000 last offseason but didnt have the space, and his new contract plus the QA he signed last off-season gives him exactly that amount. It's a good signing for a young guy who's only going to get better barring injury.

Looks decent to me. Considering all factors involved in the decision.
I think the phrases like "massive overpay" get used too frivolously on here. I think there is a valid argument to be said that its lower or higher than it "should" be but not by much and certainly not enough to get your panties in a squeeze about.

Dealing with off-topic Armchair-GM threads
I just pushed an update that should help prevent off-topic teams:
1. The "Create" page does not have a "Description" input now, that appears on the team edit page
2. The description has two bullet points indicating that the description is not for off-topic discussion
3. Clicking the publish button toggles a section with bullet points that specify Armchair-GM is not for off-topic discussion, and requires them to click a separate "Publish" button below those points.

(NJD/ARI) - Hall, Speers for Bahl, Merkley, Schnarr, 1sr round pick, conditional 3rd round pick
To everyone saying Shero didn't get enough in return, I'll raise you this point. Don't you think that if there was more on the table, he would've gone that direction? Because if he doesn't take this deal simply because it's "not enough", what happens when he doesn't get a better trade offer for him? He keeps him and lets him walk, and then everyone says, "well at least get *something* for him!". He got what he could and that's that. Not a whole lot to digest here.

(ARI / CHI) - Schmaltz for Perlini, Strome
A healthy Nick Schmaltz to start the year has been huge for the Coyotes. There's a clear vision for how Chayka and Tocchet want this team to play, and Chayka has moved out a lot of the guys who he didn't personally acquire to get that. Schmaltz is a great fit playing either center or wing for the Yotes and he's been very productive offensively to start. Strome was never going to do that in Arizona. Both teams are happy with this deal

Arizona Coyotes signed Darcy Kuemper (2 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)
I don't think people are realizing just how good Kuemper was last year. He finished 5th in the Vezina voting and kept the Coyotes in it down the stretch. Given the contracts that Chayka has already handed out to his core, this won't be a deal that hampers them if Kuemper doesn't play like a starter. I personally would've waited a little bit to see if Kuemper could prove he can play like a #1 for the whole season, but they did it now for a lower AAV.

Little high on cap hit, but that's what it was going to take to sign him to a short term deal like this. Kuemper has starter level skills, and it's smart for Arizona to do this, since they don't seem to have much in the minors to replace him. It gives them a starter quality goaltender for the next three years.

Thought experiment - Why is it ok to overpay UFA's but not RFA's?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DragonRaptorHybrid</b></div><div>I think I agree with the general premise. A couple of thoughts:
1) I think part of it is also the mentality of Hockey Men, a predominantly conservative group of people, to say "well, the young players need to pay their dues" or some BS and that older players "have earned it," whatever that means.
2) As an aside, do you think John Chayka's long-term signings with the Coyotes are smart bets to make?</div></div>
I agree 10000% with thought #1. Many of these GM's are either ex players that played back when they didn't make nearly as much as they do today or they are hockey minds from a soon to be forgotten time where "I don't care if you score 100 points, you have to earn it kiddo. Thats just the way its always been and always will and I'll die before I let some punk think he's worth more Crosby!"...... :rolleyes
Regarding #2, that's tricky because other than Chayka and maybe to an extent Dubas, we don't have a ton of data to base a formulated opinion on. Chayka's contracts for example may or may not be constituted as bad contracts in a certain way but we also don't know if he just happens to be the 1/10 that would do it that way. We won't know until the league in general adopts the ideology.
Chayka overpaid Keller, Schmaltz, Chychrun and Dvorak but I think most of us feel that even though those players are not producing enough for them to be worth what they are making now, they certainly will be worth it in a couple years. Now while all these guys are talented players, they've all either had at least 1 difficult year, injured, low producing year etc that gives risk to wanting to sign them long term. Whats the excuse against Marner? He's been improving every year and hasn't had a single year in which to give one doubt.
