Canes didn't choose Fleury over Bean. Bean is younger and is not being rushed into NHL.
Anderson has ONE year remaining on his contract.
If Canes want to upgrade in net, they could try to sign UFAs who are much better than Anderson.
Waddell actually has been solid in Carolina.

That’s not even getting into my own bias. Yes a down year for Andersen during a great career... mrazek... not so much.</div></div>
People might be surprised to see that the Canes were one of the worst teams this season in giving up high danger chances. Also, Anderson might be a slightly better goalie than Mrazek, but it's not overwhelming. Look at their stats over the last two seasons. Plus Anderson is over 30 now, has one year left, and isn't a top tier goalie ... that's a lot of risk for Canes and there's just no way they give up a lot for Anderson. If he had multiple years left and the Canes staff really thought he could be the team's starter for a few seasons, then it would be different IMO.

Toronto Idea
WHY WOULD CANES DO THIS?
Pesce is on a $4mil/yr contract. Insane value. Fleury coming off his best year ever and will be signed to something like $2mil/yr contract and is an RFA with years committed to the team still. Anderson has ONE year remaining on contract and statistically is similar to Mrazek. Canes aren't much better in net and are much worse on the blueline.
You elevate Gardiner, who just came off a terrible season and who looks two steps slow on the ice, to the top pairing.... He was outplayed by Fleury the entire season. Pesce makes everyone who plays with him better and excellent at moving the puck out of the zone.

Seems like Leafs fans are fairly focused on Anderson to Canes. So I'll keep stating the same thing: it's not a terrible thought, but there's no way Canes give up much given that Anderson is statistically similar to Mrazek. AND Anderson only has one year left on his contract. What's plausible is something like Mrazek for Anderson and both Leafs and Canes get to try out each goalie for a year before they become free agents.

Canes might be interested in Anderson if it's a straight player for player trade, such as Mrazek for Anderson. But they really aren't paying a premium to get a goalie who has stats over the past 2 years that are very similar to the goalies they currently have, and especially since he only has one year remaining.

Leafs 2021
Anderson for Mrazek is a sort of even trade if you did that alone. They have similar stats overall in past couple years and both in final year of contract.
Pesce gets put on trade talk a lot. But the reason is because we all know that his contract has ridiculous value (same for Slavin). It's not that Pesce is a top 10 blueliner in NHL, but that that value of talent/dollar in his contract is easily in the top 3 for blueliners who are not on entry level deals. In a cap constrained world, these value contracts are especially important for players who are top 6 forwards or top 4 dmen.
That's why a team would have to really overpay for Pesce because they aren't just getting his talent level, they are getting this really affordable contract both in dollars and years. Personally, I think Canes would be crazy to trade him until he's down to one year remaining on his current contract.

Changes Must be Made
If Dougie is signing a 3 year contract @ $7.3mil, there's no way he's leaving Carolina. Team and fans love him. But it's likely he's looking for 5-8 yrs at $8-$9 mil.
$7mil is certainly possible, but no way at 3 years.

Anderson isn't much of upgrade in net for Canes. He has ONE year remaining compared to Pesce's 4yearsx$4mil contract (insane value). That's not remotely fair return for Canes.

Can you win with 3 players at 33 million
Don't see Canes trading Pesce, with his incredible contract of 4 more years at $4mil, for Anderson, who only has one year left. Statistically, Reimer and Mrazek had similar seasons to Anderson and both are on cheaper contracts. 1st round pick still doesn't do enough for a team like Canes, who have a core that can win playoff series.

I honestly don't think Canes will draft Askarov. Drafting dmen and goalies in 1st round remains a higher risk bet, versus taking a forward, especially in the top 15, is much more likely to pay off.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DavidAyers</b></div><div>Yea, Vegas would rather Fleury</div></div>
Everyone seems to want Fleury now because he'll be young and on a cheap second contract. But that's why he's going to be valuable to Canes because they have a lot of salary tied up in the blueline - and he's playing his best hockey. I think one of Gardiner or Skjei is likely to be traded. I think it's Gardiner, because he just didn't fit with Canes faster tempo. But Skjei may get Canes a bigger return in a trade, so that could be a factor too.

There's little chance the Canes trade Fleury, who's an RFA and just had his best year, for one year of Anderson, who's about as good as the two goalies they already have for the next year.

Canes sign Dougie and Svech in 2021
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>Hamilton will want 8x10.5 to stay</div></div>
Yeah, that's my fear for Canes and if so, then they can't afford both Svech and Dougie. But it's been well established that Hamilton is happy in Raleigh and has close friends (including Svech) on the team. Fans love him, which he hasn't really seen in other cities. So that could factor into his decision. I think it's possible Canes could get him in the $8 mil range but the length of the contract could be the problem. It will be interesting to see if Canes keep him or trade him before next season begins if they don't think they can sign him to an extension.

Yeah, I have no idea which team would be interested. But feel pretty sure Canes will move Gardiner and I think some team will be interested. $4mil at 3 years isn't a huge risk, especially if in need of PP qb.

It would be great if Dzingel or Nino find their scoring touch. I feel like Nino can contribute on any line and was more unlucky than anything. Dzingel really needs to be on a scoring line, otherwise I just don't think he's a good fit elsewhere (i.e. with Staal or Martinook).

I would play Fleury and Geekie over Gardiner and Dzingel. Fleury was having a solid season and Geekie just adds that Foegele-like quality of energy and good chaos.
Really hoping Vatanen is a spark if Hamilton is out.

19-20 Offseason
Canes become instantly better if they move Gardiner and Dzingel. Not sure why it didn't work out with either guy, but for whatever reason they just don't fit and haven't filled the roles that were expected of them. Gardiner seemed to have turned a corner, but since Pesce went down he's been more exposed. Other teams are going to be wary of the remaining years on Gardiner's contract.
I think Fleury has played well enough to be in the lineup regularly.
Not sure if Canes would also consider moving Nino. I think they probably don't since he's been a bit unlucky, but I wouldn't be shocked if he was part of a trade.

Faulk just makes sence
That's a really low return for Canes, who already are loaded with draft picks. At a minimum they would need 1st (or two 2nds) and a high end prospect. And even then I don't think they would do it. More likely is Canes looking to get a right shot NHL forward (Williams was one of their only reliable RH forwards).

Gardiner signing effect
You want the Hurricanes to retain salary when trading a top 4 RHD and they are only getting Hyman and 4th in return? Canes have as much cap problems now as Leafs. This would be the equivalent of trading Faulk for a 4th rd pick and adding a middle left winger for $4.5 million per yr.

Laine haul from Carolina
There's basically no trade in which the Canes would move Svechnikov - he's on entry level deal for the next 2 seasons and his trajectory is insane. Hurricanes really can't afford Laine's contract.

Carolina Trade
No way Canes would do that. Pesce is almost on the no trade list because he's
- so good and
- on such a good contract.
- they just got Gardiner, so moving either Faulk or Hamilton is more likely given Gardiner's skill set.
It would take a massive offer.

My opening night lineup with Williams
There's very little chance that Martinook starts the season as a center and I think there's one stat why:
Jordan Martinook faceoff win percentage last 2 years:
17-18 season: 36.4% (ARI)
18-19 season: 44% (CAR)
Lucas Wallmark faceoff win percentage last 2 years:
17-18 season: 55.1%
18-19 season: 50.9%
I think RBA values winning the FO and maintaining possession of the puck (as he should). Martinook is better on the wing and as someone who you can move to center if needed due to injuries. So if you feel Necas has to be on the team, then you sit either Foegele, McGinn, or Martinook. Personally, I think Necas gets pushed back to Charlotte if Williams returns and then is the first call up for an injury.
