Lets do it
I know this is hard for some Leafs fans, but here are some things you have to understand before you propose trades with Carolina:
1. The Carolina Hurricanes are in a window of about 4-5 years to compete for a Stanley Cup. They have a core of young talent on mostly affordable contracts, including Aho, Teravainen, Slavin, Pesce, Svech, and Necas.
2. They also have a lot of promising young players in their system, including Bean, Suzuki, Bokk, Rees, etc.
3. They aren't trading those core NHL players for draft picks, prospects, or downgrades. See #1 and #2.
4. Goaltending was never really the problem with Hurricanes last 2 seasons. They aren't desperate to make a change. Anderson for 1 year isn't really that valuable given Canes can stick with current tandem.
5. Canes blueline is deep, but has issues. They gave up some of highest rates of high danger chances in NHL. Pesce and Slavin are two best defenders.
6. Canes have cap limitations, especially with big new contracts on the horizon for Svech and Hamilton after this season. That adds to how the Canes value players like Pesce, who is on an incredible contract.
If you consider that Leafs have a forward strength and want a better blue line, while Canes have blue line strength but want better top 6 scoring... that's where the trade talk should happen.

Granlund would make a lot of sense with a 2 year contract. Hell, given COVID and uncertainty, he might even just do one year at $6mil.
I'm a big no on Fleury. That is a high risk move for an aging goalie.

I don't think Canes would do this if it was just Martinook for Anderson.

Leaked team next year
There are so many goalie options this off season, teams aren't going to be in bidding wars except for the very top guys. Anderson is a mid tier goalie, and only has a year remaining. He's definitely not worth 13th overall. Johnsson is honestly one more mouth to feed in a pack of forwards who are somewhere between 3rd liners and 2nd liners but who have been inconsistent with scoring (Nino, Dzingle, Foegele, McGinn).
If Canes were trading for two years of Kuemper, who's been one of the best goalies in the NHL for past couple seasons, then MAYBE they trade 13th pick for him. But even then, I'm not sure it's really worth it when there's a deep draft this year and goalies can be so erratic.

I don't think Leafs get enough from Canes. Leafs should also get Aho, Slavin, and Svechnikov too.

I disagree with ur assessment that he is only a third pairing guy, but I think the canes would be better served with a more defensive guy</div></div>
yeah, that makes sense. It's not a knock on Nylander, he would be a great addition to top 6.

Honestly not sure if Canes are better with Nylander but without Pesce. Maybe, but not sure it's worth the risk. It could work with the right UFA pick up, but Vatanen is not the answer unless he's playing a 3rd line role. The combination of Skjei, Vatanen, Fleury, and Gardiner is not a good mix for bottom 4 blueline. Canes already gave up some of the worst rates of high danger shots in the NHL last season. This blueline would be even lighter on D, especially without a player like Pesce, who makes anyone with him better.
I would do the Kuemper trade. It would be really hard for Canes to let go of that #1 pick, but if they want to win a cup within the next 4 years, this is the right move.

I disagree, but Reilly is very good. They are both top 4 players. But 2 years of Reilly is definitely not worth 4 years of Pesce. Not even close.
Pesce and Slavin are both on ridiculously good contracts. They always make their linemates better. The Canes know this. It almost makes the two untradable (unless it's just a massive return).

Here's why Canes wouldn't do this:
- Reilly is a downgrade from Pesce,
- would pay $1 mil more in salary,
- would have Reilly for 2 years compared to 4 years for Pesce
- lose a RHD for a LHD when already overloaded with LHD talent

Not sure how much you watched the Canes season, but Gardiner's defense was THE problem. And terrible turnovers too. He improved once he was playing more sheltered minutes on 3rd pairing.

If Jets don't like Skjei's game, then no way this gets done. I would think the 13th overall pick this year has to at least grab their attention? They have to send some salary to Jets in this trade, but it can't be Slavin, Pesce, Aho, TT, Svech, or Necas.

Yeah, that's definitely going to be an issue this year. Bokk is in the top tier of Canes prospects, and it was hard to add him to sweeten the deal. I thought Kings might be interested because of Bokk, but also because Gardiner could help with their PP.

Mitch Marner for Brett Pesce and Teuvo Teravainen
Honestly, the value of the contracts with TT and Pesce is so incredible, they are almost untradable. Plus, it's easy to forget that this Canes team has little cap space and needs room after the next season to sign Svech and Dougie.

Canes trade with Jets and Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>etpeck</b></div><div>Yes. Skjei doesnt have a ton of value nor does Dzingle. I like Skjei but i think the canes overpaid for him because of the pressure at the deadline. Ehlers is a true top line winger. I think a package like Skjei, Dzingle, 2021 first may get it done. The prospect if needed would be a B level prospect likely</div></div>
You're not wrong that Canes overpaid for Skjei at the deadline. I don't think Canes would do a 1st, but maybe a 2nd (they have 2 this year). I think if Jets just want a mid level prospect, Canes might throw it one in - they've shown a willingness to do that recently. As long as it's not one of their top 5. Your counter proposal isn't as crazy as it seemed to me at first.

Why would they ever consider this?</div></div>
Yeah, that's understandable. I'm not totally sold on this idea. If you read the description, you'll see my thinking on this scenario. Leafs would be making some cap space for themselves and they'd either have Mrazek as a backup or trade him once they sign their new #1 goalie. I think McGinn would be perfect fit for Leafs and what they need to be a more physical team that's harder to play against. And again, he's cheaper.

Hands down best defence in the league
That's a lot of stuff for Pesce. It's definitely a haul and 1st rd pick and Anderson would get their attention. But I don't think Canes are a better team if they made this trade. This feels like something a rebuilding team might do.
IF Pesce were available, I think Canes would be looking for a top-6 scoring forward in a player-player swap. Something like Pesce-Nylander makes more sense to me, but I don't think Leafs go for that.
Can Canes interest you in Jake Gardiner?

Vegas offseason
There's probably no way Canes take on that amount of salary for a goalie who may be past his prime. Maybe with Canes getting the pick instead and Vegas retaining $1-2 million.
I think there's a plausible scenario here where Canes would do a bigger trade and send another player with Reimer (or Mrazek) to free up salary and cap space. I would guess one of Jake Gardiner or Nino Niederreiter. Vegas might counter by asking for Dzingel, who only has one year left at $3.3mil.

If Canes want to try out Anderson for a year, this might be seen as a fair deal. Especially if they can then recoup a draft pick by moving one of Reimer or Mrazek.

Canes wouldn't do this if it was a straight Pesce for Brock trade. Asking the Canes to also give a 2nd rounder is laughable.
Maybe if Van takes Gardiner off their hands.

Realistic trade
I mean, this isn't out of the realm of possibilities honestly. A second rounder instead of 3rd could make it really interesting. It would really depend on whether Canes believe in Bean's ability to be a top 4 D or not. If they project he's more a career 3rd pairing guy, they might do it. They've shown willingness to part way with prospects who they don't think are going to play above replacement level.
Personally, I think Bean is legit top 4 guy and is too valuable to trade (with potential to be high performer on entry deal).

I wouldn't trade Bean for one year of any player, let alone one year of an average goalie.
