A player who is very versatile, it’s very good defensively and plays PK for 2.1M will always be useful on any team. If the blues didn’t accept they’d be crazy

First off, that’s not way too much. When’s the last time a 100 point player was traded? If I remember correctly it was a swap Tkachuk for huberdeau, weager and a pick. That’s how much a 100 point player can get you. 2 firsts a second and a third plus a guy who plays bottom 6 on CHICAGO is just about right for Marner. Marner touches every facet of the game and he’s only 27. He’s in his prime. As far as a “rental” goes, there were reports that said that he’d waive his NMC to go to Chicago. Not likely he’d leave his hometown team and go to another team and then hit free agency the next year, wouldn’t make any sense. He’s re sign and Chicago could afford him. The best young goal scorer with a top 3 player maker in the league sounds great to me. Look what Mitch did with Matthews in Toronto with setting him up.

The point here is that the Leafs have extremely limited options to move Marner and teams know this. I'd probably do this trade if the 2025 wasn't a 1st round pick.

The Hawks '25 1st included in that deal makes it a "no thanks" from the Hawks. Marner could score his 100 points next season and it still doesn't make the Hawks a playoff team. If you think Marner is worth two 1st's (one a likely top 5 pick), a 2nd and a 3rd that's great. But the Hawks won't be the team paying that.

A lot of people like yourself really underestimate how valueable a 100 point player is. Not to mention how good defensively Marner is and he’s still young

So you would rather keep Marner and let the is year go by where there’s so many solid right shot d men available? Players that could change the leafs around in 1 season. Plus Dubas traded away all of our draft picks for rentals. Reports are that Marner wouldn’t mind being traded to Chicago. Marner holds the cards here. You’re hilariously delusional kid

yes, i would much rather keep marner than have that crap return and then vastly over pay shooting percentage stars like Joshua or spend a ton on 30 year old montour who will only get worse from here on out.
I dont care if Marner only wants to go to chicago, this return sucks, if chicago wants him they can give up something worth getting. Delusional is what people like you have talked themselves into where they think this is better than keeping the elite 2 way 1st liner

Let’s think back to the last 100 point player who was on an expiring contract who got traded. Matthew Tkachuk. What did he rerun in the trade? Jonathan huberdeau ( a 100 point player as well at the time) Mackenzie weager ( the panthers 2nd best defenseman at time of the trade) and Cole Schwindt who’s a 3rd round pick.

These drafts picks, you don’t even know there potential yet, everyone knows how great Marner is. Chicago also still has a first in both 2024 and 2025 even after the trade. Delusion

And Calgary and Florida were both legitimate playoff contenders when that trade was made. And Tkachuk wasn't on an expiring contract. He was signed already to a brand new 8 year extension. So your "comparison" really isn't a good one. If Brad can get Mitch to sign an 8 year extension for 10 or 11 million, then maybe the Hawks have some interest. But the Leafs still don't get that Chicago '25 1st.

That’s not a crap return?? That’s actually a really good return. It’s obvious that what the leafs have right now doesn’t work. Marner is the only trade that you can get something good for. One of those 1st rounders could turn out to be the next Mitch Marner you never know. You use that cap space to go out and change the teams identity like I did. Leave to do the unsexy things longer that it takes to win in the playoffs. What do you expect to do? You let him rid out his contract this year and he walks at free agency and we lose him for nothing? That would be the most delusional thing to do. Nothing you can say to change my mind

Here's your problem; unless Toronto extends him first, all they can get in return is a rental price for Marner. MAYBE a playoff team would pay that price, there is no way a rebuilding team is giving up a mid first, a lottery pick next spring, a 2nd and a 3rd. That has literally never happened in the history of the NHL in the cap era.

What does both of them being legit contenders have to do with anything? Marner makes Chicago a FAR better team than they are now. Who is bedard wingers? They’re garbage. Ever heard of a sign and trade? Yes he was on an expiring contract numb nuts.

Why wouldn’t Marner sign an extension for even 9M per year? Do you understand income tax in Ontario? They get taxed to death over here! Marner makes 10.9M salary right now. I garuntee after it’s all said and done he makes about 8.5M per year. In Chicago he’d be able to keep a lot more of the money he makes.

If Marner signs for 9M for like 6 years Chicago better be giving up 2 firsts. You’re really not in tune with hockey are ya bud? When Calgary made that trade they got back essentially the same amount of points Tkachuk put up plus a solid second pairing defenseman and a depth player plus a conditional 4th round pick. In this trade all the leafs are getting back is a bottom 6 player. The only things that make this trade good for both sides is the draft picks.

is is very much a crap return, a low end 3rd liner and a bunch of later picks and a 1st a year out is a terrible return for Marner. One of those picks could turn out to be the next liljegren and that's a way more likely outcome than the fantasy you have concocted.
The leafs are trying to win now, not rebuild. If you're so gung ho about moving him then you do it at the deadline when prices spike, not now where you make the team significantly worse for the whole season and back fill the cap space with garbage contracts that will haunt the team for years.
I dont care about changing your mind, you've clearly convinced yourself of some out right hilarious nonsense, like anyone who thinks Dakota Joshua is worth 4 million is beyond help

Riddle me this… Marner has said that he would waive his NMC to go to Chicago. Why in the world would Marner (who is a Toronto born player playing on the team he idolized growing up) waive his NMC to go to a team that has enough salary cap to pay for him?

Probably to re sign there and get a bag😂.

Everyone who says he’s “going to want 12M” is talking about a Toronto 12M… they’re taxes TO DEATH in Toronto. He probably makes about 8.5M a year on his current contract which is 10.9M. If Marner signs for 10.5M for term, like 5-6 years I can’t see how Chicago would lose a trade trading away guys that you don’t even know there potential yet.

Marner is a 100 point player if he’s healthy. He was also a lottery pick and broke records in JR. he’s only 27

Anybody that knows anything about hockey knows that prices don’t “spike” at the deadline. That’s just plain stupidity. Yeah and one of those players could turn out to be the best Mitch Marner. You’re saying they’re trying to win now but they haven’t made it past the second round in 20years. What makes you think runnnijg it back for the 9th year in a row will be any different? You use the salary cap that you get from marners contract and fill the holes of this team. Top pairing RHD, 2nd pairing RHD, 1A/B goalie, solid 3C. Dakota Joshua will be offered 4M by a team. You miss the point again; Toronto can't capture value for what they don't own and all that they own is 1 more season of Marner and thus, can only get value for 1 season of Marner regardless of what the new team and Marner agree to long term (or not).

Players salaries are prorated and are taxed where they play games, which means half of the season they are taxed at home the other half in all the jurisdictions in which they play. Illinois is 5% plus federal rate of 37% for a grand total of 42% tax leaving 58% as take home.

There is no way, Chicago who is 3 more years away from competing, is going to give up a lottery pick, a mid first, a 2nd and a 3rd and zero chance Toronto is able to get that from any team for 1 year of Marner. That would be close to the value if Marner signed an extension first and then was traded. 1 year of Marner is worth 2 late 1sts and a roster player, not a lottery pick, mid 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a roster player.

Not to mention, this is Patrick Kane country where we expect the highest paid player on the team to take us to the playoffs and win cups without needing another star on his line...Marner is an overpaid diva who can't deliver in the post season and is two-thirds the player he is without Matthews.

lol, yeah dude totally, that's why every single year teams get absolute hauls at the deadline, often flipping players they traded for scraps or signed for nothing in the summer for much larger returns.
Lol, just hilarious stuff here. Your trade is bad and nothing you can say will change that, you wanna know what is worse than running it back? Making the team worse because your fee fees got hurt and your so mad at a player you cant even pretend to think straight about him. That's how you come up with obnoxiously terrible trades like this and think they're a good idea against all logic. and if a team is stupid enough to offer joshua 4 mill a year then I will laugh long and hard at them like I do every time a team signs a one year wonder to way too much money because they are too stupid to understand outlier seasons with massive percentage riding.

Show me a player, as a 1 year rental, that got back a mid first, top 5 pick, 2nd, 3rd and roster player. And yet, you think he gets more as a 1 year rental? The guy who's going to aim for $12.5M+ on his next contract and yet can't carry a team in the playoffs and needs a star to play next to him to put up 99 points.... HYSTERICAL
