Quoting: TOR
Riddle me this… Marner has said that he would waive his NMC to go to Chicago. Why in the world would Marner (who is a Toronto born player playing on the team he idolized growing up) waive his NMC to go to a team that has enough salary cap to pay for him?
Probably to re sign there and get a bag😂.
Everyone who says he’s “going to want 12M” is talking about a Toronto 12M… they’re taxes TO DEATH in Toronto. He probably makes about 8.5M a year on his current contract which is 10.9M. If Marner signs for 10.5M for term, like 5-6 years I can’t see how Chicago would lose a trade trading away guys that you don’t even know there potential yet.
Marner is a 100 point player if he’s healthy. He was also a lottery pick and broke records in JR. he’s only 27
You miss the point again; Toronto can't capture value for what they don't own and all that they own is 1 more season of Marner and thus, can only get value for 1 season of Marner regardless of what the new team and Marner agree to long term (or not).
Players salaries are prorated and are taxed where they play games, which means half of the season they are taxed at home the other half in all the jurisdictions in which they play. Illinois is 5% plus federal rate of 37% for a grand total of 42% tax leaving 58% as take home.
There is no way, Chicago who is 3 more years away from competing, is going to give up a lottery pick, a mid first, a 2nd and a 3rd and zero chance Toronto is able to get that from any team for 1 year of Marner. That would be close to the value if Marner signed an extension first and then was traded. 1 year of Marner is worth 2 late 1sts and a roster player, not a lottery pick, mid 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a roster player.
Not to mention, this is Patrick Kane country where we expect the highest paid player on the team to take us to the playoffs and win cups without needing another star on his line...Marner is an overpaid diva who can't deliver in the post season and is two-thirds the player he is without Matthews.
