Detroit needs additionally, Colorado's second in 2024 and Pittsburgh's 2nd in 2025 + Sean Farrell as a prospect, to make the value equal.

And even then, they will not do this trade. Yzerman, will just draft the guy he wants.

What would you say is the cost? I can't say I would hate having someone a little prickly around the edges like Gallagher for a bit.

In what world does a 3rd round pick move you from the mid 20s to 15?

That's not even close enough to jump to 15th overall from 27th overall. You would need to add at least two second round picks OR add a player equal to the value of 2 second round picks (preferred).

That said. Wings aren't at all interested in dropping back unless that player coming back made Yzerman's eyebrows raise. Lane Hutson for example. Wings would much rather keep 15 and draft Sennecke themselves.

Perhaps Detroit should offer the 15th overall and a 3rd round pick to move up to 5th overall hahaha

At this current moment he is a 2 million ish player (according to athletic player card contract values) but at most would be a three milllion dollar player. He did get 31 points last year but I dont see why / how he could repeat that on the sharks. I would want a second or pick + mid prospect for a 2-3 million x 2 year cap dump effectively.

Citing Athletic player cards is probably not a good idea…

I disagree, it depends on how you use them. Statistical modeling, and statistics in general are always meant to be used as a supplemental tool, and nothing more. So while I am using it in part to develop a point. In this case it is to show that from what we can measure through statistics, Gallagher is a player who is not worth his contract. This is backed up by his lack of production relative to his contract and the amount of games he has missed in the past five seasons. His outlier of a season this year would not do much to improve his value, and the sharks will not likely get anything from him in terms of being a flipable asset. Then in the least reliable indication of player impact we may look at public opinion, in which Canadiens fans typically value Gallagher quite a bit higher than fans from the rest of the league. This would indicate one of two things; that Gallagher is a better player than the rest of the league thinks, or that Canadiens fans are falling victim to a little bit of homerism.

Same model dictated for 80% of the season that Jeff Petry was a more valuable defenseman than Mo Seider.

Any Detroit fan can tell you that's bat**** insane. Yeah, it's one example, but I very much doubt it's the only one.

Well again you’ve cited a perfect example of why statistical modeling should only be used as a supplementary tool. Every hockey fan can tell you who is the better player. But in taking to account use, teammates, who they are deployed against, team goal tending, all are pieces to the puzzle. So again there is only a problem if your using the model as the be all end all. There are several models out there that would also tell you seider is under performing and there was a whole news cycle to determine why and what the context of his numbers were. Does not change the fact that Gallagher should be an expensive cap dump. The model was only one part of my reasoning. If you just TLDR’d the rest then essentially it was in his best statistical season in five years combined with him playing the most game he has played in while, he is still well short of being worth his contract and has an extra year. Going to a worse team there is no reason to expect him to rebound.
