Lets put it this way. SJ MIGHT take JT if the deal included Toronto's first, not San Jose’s. Even then retain 50% so he can be moved at TDL.
None of which matters w/NMC. But that Labanc signing is a slam dunk! Did you like Noah Gregor? Now you have same thing, But w/o all that pesky speed.

SJ doesn't have to think very long about acquiring another 2024 first for Granny just so that Karlsson trade keeps on giving.

If I'm Grier I could go either way on this. Looks like a draft day deal to me. I'll let you know after the first 6 picks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>worldwidesensei</b></div><div>Why, exactly, would Vegas do that?
They're already a playoff team, they don't need any regular season points from Marner to help them get there. And he clearly is pretty useless in the playoffs.
That is the conundrum TOR finds itself in with Marner and his NMC.
Marner will want to go to a playoff team, but a playoff team doesn't need/want Marner.
Marner will have to waive his NMC to a non-playoff team and then hope that either, that non-playoff team makes the jump to the playoffs with him, or they trade him at the TDL.</div></div>
Why? Because its a bloody handout and Vegas loves bloody handouts. Marner AND a 1st for Hill and Theodore? A guy I've heard Vegas fans declare 'expendable' after the Hanifin trade?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>Sharks should do that in a heartbeat! After the top 10 it’s kinda level till mid 2nd so getting 2 1sts plus a 2nd next year to trade back is a strong move! Potentially Jiricek could still be there at the jets pick and that’s who they might have taken with the 14th anyways.</div></div>
Jets pick is locked in at 27, I would be quite surprised if Jiricek dropped that far. That being said, Sharks seem to have really stuck the landing with at least one of their 2nds last draft (Halttunen). Like I said, I don't hate having more. 5 picks between 27-42 is a lot of pasta against the wall.

A Scouts Proposed Marner Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dh91</b></div><div>You think Marner cares about any of that? He's looking for a pay day. You don't get pay days collecting meaningless points on the worst team in the league.
Name me the last star player who either signed or waived their NMC to go play on the worst club in hockey. I'll wait.</div></div>
If he's looking for a payday and that's all he cares about, guess where the money is?
Either he is getting run out of town and he'll go where a deal is made. Or he's going to just let the Leafs pay him and sign where he wants with no assets going to the Leafs at the end of 24-25. Regardless of whether he wants to go to SJ or not, its a terrible deal for Teal to give up those assets for a $11m season-long rental. Eventually Toronto will be rid of him and there will be nothing but Cups and parades up and down Yonge for the foreseeable future.

I don't hate it myself. I think there is merit to more. But I suspect the majority of SJ fans lose their **** because they just did that in the '22 draft. There's already a bunch of numbskulls out there convinced Grier will trade down from #1 because he did it from #11. Never mind that it was 2 days after he was hired and the draft decisions were likely already decided by Joe Will. Most Shark fans I talk to are hoping to use those picks to trade up for a higher end D. But you have to find a partner.

D for Now and Future
Reilly is not worth an unprotected first.
I'm on the fence about trading up. The pool is so muddy and prospects are rising and falling so arbitrarily right now, I feel like there's a chance that what we want might still be there at 14 and we'll miss out on someone else good that inexplicably dropped to 33. Trading up seems great if we can get into 7 or 8. Otherwise, 14 after already getting 1 is something we should just go with.

A Scouts Proposed Marner Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dh91</b></div><div>Highly doubt Marner waives for SJ, and just because a scout proposed it doesn't mean the Leafs accept it</div></div>
Marner has good friends in San Jose, no ice daggers on the wind and a future star to center his line. And, its a mellow place where he won't be a constant scapegoat. There are lots of reasons to go places other than W/L record.
Leafs fans: "Marner is useless and needs to go, its all his fault we fail in the playoffs"
Also Leafs fans: "Marner is elite and we want more than an unprotected 1st round pick and 20 year-old first round center to clear his $10.9m cap"
I kind of hope he just parks for the season and goes UFA for nada.

Just to be clear, I hope they do it because of how hilariously bad this has the potential of being.
So you leave Liljegren out. The actual cap savings in this trade, if the Leafs don't retain is ~200k. That puts them ~1.1m of remaining cap which is not going to fill the final 2 forward spots with their 23rd ranked prospect pool (that 23rd was prior to trading their #1 prospect to SJ). I honestly don't know how many teams are just waiting around to trade picks for a McNabb. I can't imagine its many.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sharcuda22</b></div><div>The value is good, but Muk is the only defenseman that we have in the pool that has a chance at developing beyond the middle pair (#2 ceiling but that seems to be a minority opinion for scouts). Rossi is great but Sharks have that center depth established now. I would do Thrun or/and Thompson + a high pick but idk how much that helps the wild</div></div>
And Thompson as one of a thin RD pool. I think they need to be especially conservative with that position at the moment. Thrun I could see. But the draft pick package the Wild would be wanting for what is pretty close to a long shot is probably going to be steep.

Retention is never pointless. Especially for a 33 year-old going UFA after the season going to a prospective trade partner that has no retention slots of their own. Regardless of how much cap Sharks have, hockey is still a business that looks heavily at ROI and Orlov in his last season at 7.75 is very unlikely to achieve much. Grier has made it clear he is not looking to just spend the bank and that's all this really does. Its a cap dump plain and simple. One of our retention slots as it stands is Burns. If the Canes want any more help from the Sharks, they need to grease the wheels a bit more. And I guarantee nobody else in the league is taking on Orlov for any asset at all without significant, up to 50% retention.

Except they already have roster spots to fill with no cap to do it. This will not help. Remember, Liljegren is going to get a raise this year, through arbitration or negotiation. So Toronto has to retain for this to work. I suspect Marner resigns there if this were to happen. And knowing that org, that's where he is going to end up. Then he'll trip over a cactus in February and play video games by the pool at Stone's house with Hertl until the playoffs.

And bigger is definitely what Grier is pushing for defensively as well. Also keep in mind that a year ago SJ drafted C Will Smith at #4 over all. So the center 1-2 punch is kind of already in the bank. Not to say someone can't move to wing. Yeah, the more I think about it the less I think Grier bites on it.

I'd be lying if I said I thought the Sharks wouldn't consider this. Very interesting offer. It would be hard to just give up on a defenseman that is ready for full-time NHL duty on a team that is desperately needing to develop their defense. And even though Rossi's stock slipped since draft, he looked better last year. Just a bit concerned about his size as well.
So much more fun trade idea than the usual fare.

He's only worth that if he's 4-5 years younger. Either way, he's unlikely to get moved anywhere w/o retention.
