why would florida trade their goalie for the future for an old 2nd center?

He’ll get more than that as a UFA. If he hits UFA, I’d expect nothing less than $13M aav.

LA needs Danault, and LA has Portillo who has played just as well as Knight in the AHL (a lot cheaper to boot)

That’s hilarious. Well looks like Marner is going to the KHL then.

Draisaitl and Rantanen will set the price for Marner.
Drai is worth 2-4 mill more
Rantanen is worth 1.5-2.5 mill more

Both can play Center and both show up in playoffs.

Since Moore - Danault - Arvidsson/Fiala have been our best and most consistent forward line since January 1, 2023 -- that's right, 2023, not 2024 -- we won't be trading the center of that line for a struggling goalie trying to revive his career and who hasn't played an NHL game since 2023.

It's not clear that Knight has any future at all. Still mad about Danault leaving Montreal and finding a much better career elsewhere, I see.

Sorry, he'll get $12.5 so I underpaid him.

Laugh now, cry later when it becomes reality.

Remember Nylander was "anything over $10 million was too much", last summer, by fall he signs for $11.5 million.

I admit, laziness, I knew I needed a goalie and I knew I needed to cash dump to make this some what work out.

Clearly you don’t know how UFA works.

Marner currently makes $10.093M, he’ll be looking for a raise on a new contract, especially if he hits UFA. Next seasons cap is projected to be $87.7M and then the season after that is unknown right now but let’s say it increases another $2.5M on the low end. So that’s roughly $90.2M

Now back to to Marner’s current cap hit - the $10.093 was signed at a cap hit percentage of 13.38%. So even if he signed for the same contract when he hits UFA, then 13.38% of $90.2M is a little under $12.1M and that’s for not even a raise so there’s the base number. Now add in that it’s a UFA contract and players that are free agents always get more on the open market since there will be multiple teams bidding on him. & whether you love him or not, there will be a bunch of teams looking to sign Marner, I’d guess between 5-8 serious teams. So if a team wants to outbid the other teams, you’ve gotta offer something more than what they have to offer which is usually more money.

Now let’s look at a comparable - William Nylander. We can all agree that Marner is the better player (if you can’t then you don’t know a single thing about hockey). Nylander’s cap hit percentage is 13.77%. So now that’s the baseline - and 13.77% of $90.2M is just under $12.5M so that’s the REAL STARTING point for Marner. Add on that he’s a UFA and an extra $500K for all the reasons listed above and the fact that the cap should inflate over the term of the contract and now we’re at $13M easily..

So yes. As a UFA $13M+ is what Marner is looking at. He’ll likely be between $12-$12.5M if he re-signs with a team before he hits UFA but that will likely be with the extra year at the end.

There’s your lesson in hockey today. It’s not all about if YOU like the player. It’s a business first. & Marner is an asset that brings in money to a team and has the comparables to justify a $13M UFA contract whether you like it or not.

Nylander’s cap % is 13.14 (11.5/87.7). No idea why you’re using 23-24 for Nylanders contract that starts in 24-25 and 25-26 for marners contract that starts in 25/26

Capfriendly has him at 13.77%. Presumably they didn’t account for the cap raise.

If Marner asks for 13 mill which will be more then, tkachuk/ pasta/ kuch/ mackinnon/ potentially Rantanen/ potentially same as Draisaitl/ almost the same as Matthews. Then it will clearly show he only cares about money and nothing about winning so good luck to him playing for bottom feeders after Toronto.

The contract comp to nylander is terrible everyone knows nylander is overpaid. Nylander is worth 10 max maybe 10.5 if he was to play full time Center and excel in that spot.

But with that nylanders ability to play Center will give him and advantage on contract negotiations, Goals also pay so nylander being a much stronger goal scorer also adds up.

You can argue marners selke level defence but all that **** disappears in playoffs anyways.
I’m a bruins fan I’ve got my fair share of seeing leaf’s play and over our last few playoff runs against each other I can easily say that
Nylander/ Kadri/ Hyman/ Connor brown/ Kapanen / Johnsson/ all had played a much better all-around game then Marner did most those series

yes, can't believe bergevin signed gallagher instead. Thats like giving your big contract to your running back instead of your Left tackle.

You can argue whether or not Nylander is overpaid all you want - that doesn’t matter now. He’s paid that and that’s the comparable out there & Marner has always been better than Nylander so it’s a baseline his agent will use.

Also you saying “Nylander has the ability to play centre” as an advantage is quite hysterical. Just be cause a guy “can” play centre, doesn’t mean anything. Marner played centre in junior too, Nylander hasn’t played centre consistently at all in the NHL and when they said they were gonna give him a long look at the position this season, it literally lasted less than 2 games - his “ability to play centre” means absolute dog$hit nothing.

Marner is worth more than Nylander, substantially more. Whether or not you like it doesn’t matter.

Marner did not play Center for his last 2 years in junior because he struggled I’ve seen all the info on that rumour, he’s not a capable Center he plays his best hockey at wing. Nylander “DID” play Center all through junior and did play Center 3 of his first 4 seasons, Marner has never took over 100 draws in a season

Actually Marner did play centre in his last 2 years in junior. He rotated with Dvorak - as a long time season ticket holder of the Knights I literally watched him play centre.

& no. Nylander came up as a winger and has always been a winger. He has not had any continued length of time at centre in the NHL. He was tried at points but barely lasted that long. If you’re only classifying a guy as a centre based on how many faceoffs he’s taken, you might wanna double check that.
