Free Agent Splashes to Be Competitive

Description
Utah's new owner says that he and his wife want their team to be competitive right out of the box, so I expect them to aggressively pursue free agents in the off season. I don't expect them to be able to land any of the big names (Guentzel, Lindholm, Reinhart, Pesce, Roy) but I'll take Chandler Stephenson or Sean Monahan at $5.5 million for however many years they want and Jonathan Marchessault or Tyler Toffoli at $6 million for however many years they want. (If Utah can't land one of the latter, maybe they can sign Jake DeBrusk for up to $5 million.) Brady Skjei should like his number and term.

None of the current crop of free-agent goaltenders appealed to me, at least for Utah.

Toronto fans are always insisting that Timothy Liljegren is worth more than a second, so, here's twice that.

Utah puts an end to the previous regime's Barrett Hayton mistake; Habs fans keep telling everyone that Jordan Harris or Jayden Struble has to go. I'll take either.

A couple of recent first-round draft picks signed off the Reserve List even though I don't think that will happen this season; I'm just doing this so no one forgets who's in the pipeline.

Can't see any reason Lily would be worth less than Sandy. Being right handed should mean a better return.
Would look like:
2 early 2nds (top 40), both in same year
late 1st + late 2nd (dif years)

Besides, it isn't just a value issue. Why would the Leafs do this? How does this help them? We have been looking for RHD for years and now you want to jettison the homegrown one for picks?

And why would we need to move Liljegren for that exactly?
And more importantly, why wouldn't we just make that swap directly? Either in a 2 or 3 team deal?

It simply doesn't make sense. We need a boat. We have a boat and you're offering the mystery box

Will be interesting to see how quick geekie comes, much rather slot Maccelli and Guenther higher, possibly a spot to sell on Crouse and or schmaultz, like the Stephenson add, might be slotted a little high and maybe a little too much term, but solid add. Not sure toffoli is the right add here, little light on foot speed, very good streaky scorer, but his window may not extend long enough, good vet, but don’t want to block the kids coming. Could be one crazy summer here, with possibly moving some cap, ridiculous amount of cap to start with and abundance of picks also. Possibly a spot for a werenski or chabot to find a home, could get rather creative and possibly a laine home, but that’s a no agreement on here proposition.

There’s one huge reason, age. Liljegren is 25 while Sandin was 22. Both are pretty much the same talent, but Sandin can actually develop in something more. Liljegren won’t improve unless there’s a massive surprise. The best trade comp is Siegenthaler to New Jersey for a third, so Toronto would be lucky to get a late second for him

The problem is that Liljegren is in no mans land between a good third pairing dman and a mediocre second pairing dman. I don't see his ceiling being much higher than that. The Leafs can't afford to pay him second pair money when he's giving us third pair results. The 2nds can be used to make a cost-effective TDL move or draft talent like Knies, who becomes cap-controlled on an ELC. To use your metaphor, we would have to overpay for a leaky boat when we could jump ship and swim a short distance to several sturdier, cheaper boats.

The dude is keefes most played D when we are trying to hold a lead, and also while were trailing. He also has been putting up strong results.

I think the issue here is just that your eval is off lmao

Yeah he plays top 4 mins on a team that uses Ilya Lyubushkin as a top pairing defenseman... Where he plays in the lineup is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is he just isn't as good as we need a top 4 dman to be on this team and he's not gonna magically improve into one. This is coming from a guy who likes Lilly and wishes we could sign him to a 4 x 2.5 AAV. His skillset is a dime a dozen: pretty good offensively, ok defensively, not that physical. Only thing that is valuable is his right shot.

Liljegren just turned 25. Sandin was 22 at the time of the trade. Shows your hockey knowledge there.

Liljegren play top 4 minutes, but boy is he bad in those minutes. Sandin was mostly playing bottom pairing minutes, but he was good in those

Sandy and Lily are currently the same age. Pay attention.

Wow if they gave two 5ths for Liljegren I would be shocked, how could that even slightly move the needle?

I do agree with you that they will be aggressive but far more aggressive than what you have.

some teams don't want a Liljegren and want a pick. Not saying this acgm is ideal, but it's true that some teams don't want a Liljegren. Anyway, just trying to rationalize this acgm's reasoning.

The poster traded for two seconds and I countered with I would be surprised if they gave two fifths

Please explain?

Liljegren has some value. I think that two seconds is probably high but I wanted to pre-empt the outraged screams of Toronto homers claiming he's as good as Bowen Byram. (One such in particular has said that he's worth two top-40 picks.) I thought your comment was criticizing me for saying that he was only worth two fifths.
