Genuinely intriguing from an Ottawa perspective

Also feel like Toronto would want the '24 1st instead of the '25

Can't see it making sense without Norris's money going out. Need to clear more money to address the back end and goaltending. Liljegren is fine, but if he's meant to be a big top 4 add to the blueline the Sens are cooked. He's a 3rd pair guy who you're comfortable with on the 2nd if there's an injury.

Also hot take (maybe?) But I'd put him with Pinto on the 2nd line. Pinto could really thrive as a goalscorer between G and Marner, and it'd be a monster defensive line too.

Realistically I don't see how it works for Ottawa. Will cost a fortune to acquire, will cost a fortune to extend (assuming he doesn't go the DeBrincat/Chychrun one and done route) and he doesn't show up in the playoffs.

i mean, that's a no even without the top 10 protection. You want marner it's gotta at least start with the 24 pick without protection

Wrong, Leafs accept this deal. Two firsts is a freebie

I completely agree, if we could undo Duchene, DeBrincat and Chychrun to keep the picks... 4th in '19 couldve been Seider, 7th in '22 couldve been Mintyukov or Geekie, 12th last year couldve been Benson.

But unlike all of those trades I think Marner represents the best player by a mile and in this scenario he would also come with an extension which would negate what we saw with the other 3 where we watched them get flipped back out (pending Chychrun) for less a year later after no extension was ever put in place.

It would make the cap scenario extremely difficult but I think a 20-30G 80-100P player in the middle of his prime would guarantee playoffs and put them immediately into a window of contention. Norris could be flipped back out, G may be willing to re-sign for less. If the extension could be for 11-11.5m it may very well be worth the headache.

I would accept if the 2024 1st was Ottawa's rather than Boston's, and both picks got top 6 protection rather than top 10.

There's just nothing here to really entice the Leafs to move a player of Marner's caliber, let alone add Liljegren... Like imagine if that was a return offer for Brady+ or Timmy+

Not addressing a major area of need (1RHD - even taking our best one, Center, Legit #1G) and not replacing what's lost in Marner in any way. We would have the bit of extra cap space and those picks to work with to maybe fill one of those needs, but still... pretty lukewarm

Fair. Unfair. It matters not.

Both teams would not deal with each other for such a big asset. Not when there would be other teams with less risky rivalries willing to offer equal to what Ottawa could offer. NOT TO MENTION That Marner would probably not want to waive to go to another hockey hotbed where every move is scrutinized just like before AND also is in such close proximity for ridicule of his prior team.

I don't think Marner has a very high value given his lack of post season success and his high expiring cap hit...but its not far off what you have there...more likely Toronto would go for a RHD like JBD than Chychruyn...obvi they would want Tkachuck but that won't happen...will it?

My guess is Marner will actually ask for a trade to a west team like Utah, Vegas or even LA...a place where he won't have to be the cover boy for an angry media rag like the Sun...a place where he will be protected and respected...and HOPEFULLY a place where he makes a post season impact...see Zach Hyman

lol Marner to Toronto would be the biggest heel turn.

What would Marner's extension be?

He isnt built for the playoffs. Its a different sport. He clearly isnt willing to take a hit to make a play. The gifs are amazing! Going to Ottawa makes all the sense in the world for Marner. He can wave and never make the playoffs, again!

WIN-WIN?!? tears of joy

It's not working.
Move on with Marner.
Everyone sees it at this point that it's becoming comical.
Just like being financially literate. Sunk cost.
You need to be able to flush your emotions with fandom. I know fandom is irrational but it's irrational to keep a player that doesn't perform to his abilities every single time that the team needs him, when it matters.
It's no longer a question. It's the trend.
