Nicolas Mattinen has signed a new contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Really solid pickup for the Leafs. Following with Treliving's recent trend, Mattinen is a 6'6 physical defenseman who mainly specializes in locking down the defensive end of things. He's got a solid slapshot and is a former London Knight which is always a W.

My favourite part of this signing is the journey Mattinen took to finally earn an NHL deal. Funnily enough, he was drafted by the Leafs back in 2016. After going unsigned, he redeclared for the NHL draft and went undrafted. He bounced around a bit, and has been playing in Europe as of late. Was a real strong presence in the DEL this season, which ultimately led to the Leafs circling back. Curious to see what he can do with this opportunity, he will almost certainly start with the Marlies. Good signing for the Leafs!

Seems like a decent AHLer, he’s 26 so he likely will not grow much, I’m surprised he played for the university of Ottawa’s hockey program because their program is not that good (like most Canadian university hockey programs)
