Being a GM is easy if you have compromising photos of other team’s GMs . Why would the Flames do that?
I’d be surprised that Reinhart doesn’t re-up with Panthers but maybe 🤷🏻

    Calgary declines.

Trading for a players rights doesn't give you the 8th year, It only means you have the first dibs to sign that player before free agency. It's still only a 7 year deal. You would need to have acquired Reinhart at the trade deadline for the 8th year.

you are correct but if its a sign and trade then the panthers are signing him and they can do 8 years.

Pretty sure with the tax differences between Vancouver and Florida that he could sign an 8x8 in Florida and still come out with the same money as the 9.5 in Vancouver.

Just checked, Reinhart would only need 7.25 million in Florida to match the takehome pay of 9.5 in Vancouver. 4.46 million take home pay, he would be money ahead in Florida taking an 8x8.

The only thing is that a sign and trade is going to cost more than a 2nd round pick. I would imagine the 2nd is for his rights to sign him first.

No it isn't. the rights to the 8th year would go for a day 2 pick just like severson's did

Are you factoring in that players are taxed where the games are? Meaning 41 road games are taxed differently? Are you also factoring in that most players have pre tax investments? Are you factoring in that income tax isn't the only tax there is?

Also, they still have to pay federal taxes. Say a 10% state income tax would be 950K on 9.5 million before factoring in the above

The tax disparities are so over exaggerated. Fact is when your pay is millions of dollars a year you get all kinds of tax writeoffs. A player would have to be a complete idiot not to get a good accountant to do his return and take full advantage of all the writeoffs. In the end the difference would be nowhere near 2.25 mil, probably more like 500k.

You don't only get tax write off in Canada, bud, US tax code is littered with them too. Florida has zero state income tax, players there only pay federal income tax at around 33%

Vancouver has federal and provincial income tax at over 55%. You can write off all day, you're not reducing it 20%, and that's before you consider the cost of living or if he likes the weather better.

He easily goes for more than Hronek, as he would go for more than Chychrun. Also your offer is strictly less than what you paid for Hronek. NYI's pick on March 1st last year was 15th OA in a stacked draft, do you genuinely expect Vancouver's 2025 pick to be better 15 and 17?

That feels crazy unfair for teams in low tax states such as Florida and Texas compared to California and Vancouver.

There's gotta be ways for the league to avoid this

No it doesn't, a pre UFA sign and trade is literally only for the 8th year of term before that player walks in free agency. Florida would only do that if they can't afford him so they are essentially salvaging a pick by doing the trade. A 2nd is arguably a bit high considering it only cost Columbus a 3rd to get Severson's 8th year

There's only 4 team in no state tax states, and thus only so many players a team can do that to?

I know the leafs front loaded Tavares contract with a huge signing bonus year one that he's going to court with Canada over because at the time he signed it he was a New York resident, but Canada wants to tax it because it was paid to come to a Canadian team.

Only a 2nd round pick for Reinhart in a sign and trade? 30 other teams blow that offer right out of the water (so far out it'll go into orbit) if he'll agree to a sign and trade with them.
