How are you getting the exact same thing for a 5M Pageau, as you are with a 3M Nelson? Retain 50% on Pageau, and dump him for near nothing, and I think Chicago may accept… for a 2nd, no chance.

My thought of any Nelson or Palmieri trade would be done at the trade deadline, which equals a bigger trade value return. If the Ilses can even get under the cap to make them.

Pageau with 2 seasons left, I believe he'll get a positive return even without retention, especially going to a bottom feeding team who needs experience and high cap hit with a low cash payout. Pageau checks all those boxes off.

Hawks obviously decline. They aren't paying anything for JGP. And the idea that JGP at his full cap hit gets the same return as Nelson w/ retention is laughable. At his full cap hit, nobody is paying a 2nd for JGP.

Didn't see this before I wrote my other comment. This line of thinking isn't realistic at all from the Hawks perspective. They have PLENTY of experience in their room already. And after re-signing Dickinson, Foligno and Mrazak, the Hawks will have no problem signing two or three UFA's and hitting the cap floor. If you want some perspective on how a JGP to Chicago trade would look, see last summer's Bailey to Chicago deal.

Not totally un-believable; the Pens GM traded a 2nd Rd pick for 2 years @ $5 for Grunland and a 3rd Rd pick for 2 years @ $5 for R. Smith.

See Bailey is retired, Pageau is still a Nhl worthy player.
And Bailey was traded to be bought out, hence the bribe.
Big difference.

So offer JGP to a team with playoff aspirations if that's your line of thinking. The Hawks certainly aren't that. And I don't think you'll find even one Pens fan on this site that thinks either one of those trades was a good deal for the Pens.

Seems like a Lou thing to do, he won't be GM when all these long term contracts expire.

Bailey traded to create cap space. JGP being moved in this ACGM for exact same reason. Not that big a difference. Isles still pay if they want to send JGP to Chicago.

I was thinking the same contract as NJD gave Palat, but yea, there is an age difference by a couple years.

Why so sensitive because I brought up your team... honestly believe Pageau has postive trade value, even if the other GM's believe they're helping Lou get out of his cap hell mess.

If Beauvillier can get traded twice for positive trade value (albeit just a 5th Rd'er) Pageau who is by far a better player, can be positive trade value too.

oh yea, it was the Hawks who helped Van get out of cap hell by giving them a 5th Rd'er for a $4+ million 4th liner.

Thinking the Hawks will be "buyers" this off season and trade away picks for vets isn't going to happen. They'll do exactly what they did last summer. Take on a bad contract or two for additional picks and sign 2 or 3 UFA's. Teams like Chicago, San Jose and Anaheim will be trying to monitize their cap space. Isles will be lucky to move JGP at his full cap hit for future considerations or a late round pick at best. There just aren't many teams looking for a 3C with a $5m cap hit. If the Isles retain on him, then sure, maybe they find a trade partner.

As for Beau, the Hawks were in a desperate situation to add a guy who could play in their top 6, which was decimated by injuries at the time of that trade. Turned out Beau wasn't that guy. Why Nashville paid a 5th for him is still a mystery to me. Beau is not a $4m player. Not even close.

A third line center named Monahan got traded for a 1st Rd pick.

I know, his contract is more than half less than Pageau's.

And that was a deadline deal in a weak center market with multiple teams looking for centers. Maybe the Isles could have got a 1st for JGP at the TDL if they retained half.

We obviously disagree on JGP's trade value. And that's fine. The great thing about the NHL and this site is there's always other teams to move players to if the original deal doesn't work for both sides.

So the way to getting out of cap hell is to trade Nelson half retained for scraps and pay a much worse player in Tarasenko 6 mill?

I guess you missed reading the poll, to get out of cap hell the Ilses will have to trade at least one player away.

Nelson is the least likely but...can he score 25 goals next season so he trade value at the deadline will be a 1st Rd'er?

As for Tarasenko, well the Ilses were one of the teams considering signing him last summer.

Nelson is twice the player Tarasenko is, which is why the isles wouldn’t trade Nelson just to give Tarasenko the same $.

Nelson could score 20 goals next season and he’d still return a 1st rd pick. 3 straight years of 30+ goals
