should the leafs be bounced in rd 1

Description
if the leafs get rolled in the first round, and Tre wants to make a major move, it pretty much has to be Marner.
Nylander and Matthews are fully locked up, and JT doesn't seem likely to be moved.

Of course this is all hypothetical, honestly I'm not sure if this makes the Leafs worse offensively, but they are probably better defensively built like this.

Goaltending is a huge upgrade as well.

    maybe, maybe not? who knows.
    assuming you're not his agent.

Debrusk has never had more than 50 points in a season, let's hold our horses before we predict 8x8 for ole Jakey

    1. It doesn't make sense to trade of Saros as you have Woll and Hildeby
    2. It doesn't make sense to add your 26 1st
    3. You are over the cap
    4. Domi is more likely to sign a cheaper deal than Stephenson and he should...
    5. You forgot about Lilly
    6. Jones dienst get more than 900K
    7. You forgot about Nikita Grebenkin... Whom can replace Cowan and allow him to destroy the comp in the O

Don't see that unless Tavares has already cooked a deal super cheap and the leafs just pay to have another team eat the dead cap

That Nashville trade is insulting. Marner is good, but his contract expires after next year and God knows what he's looking to get paid. Forsberg is signed to a reasonable deal for the next 6 years and is producing well. So I wouldn't swap Forsberg for Marner 1 for 1. Hirvonen and a 2026 1st don't get you Saros. If Toronto wanted to get Saros or Forsberg it would start with Knies, Minten or Cowan. No way around that

Then I don't see the Leafs making that move... I think JT and the Leafs already have his next contract cooked at like 2-4 mill for 5 years, making him a Leaf for life

    1. Saros is way better than Wool, who has proven to be injury prone as hell. Why would you put all your eggs in the basket of two goalies who have played 20 games in the NHL...
    2. I'm trying to lean on the side of overpayment for the sake of argument
    3. 200K over the cap, is negligible, these are all made up contracts? subtract 50K from each if that makes you happy.
    4. I'd rather have Chandler Stephenson. 2X cup winner, bigger, stronger, natural centreman vs winger/centre hybrid in dominated
    5. I left lily out on purpose because we need to change out philosophy and get big, sturdy defensemen. in my opinion (and the proof of every cup winning team for the last 8 years)
    6. Jones gets 1M vs 900K? I think a team in the NHL might offer him a million bucks based on how he played in relief this year. IDK.

maybe just having a body out there to protect bedard for 2 season? Hawks aren't going to be up against the cap any time soon.

I think an extension would be in place with Marner, but this trade doesn't make sense for either team as TO doesn't need Saros and Marner>Forsberg so there's no point in adding Hirvonen and NSH needs Saros...

    I think a better deal would be MM (with extension)+2 4rth for Forsberg+Fabbro (with extension)+2027 1st+mid prospect

    Comp is here M. Tkachuk
Forsberg = Huberdeau (Hubby was coming off an 115 point season)

    1. Put that doesn't matter as why trade and spend cap on a strength? Woll does the job, no need to upgrade and spend on a very limited cap
    2. I wouldn't trade Marner+1st for anything less than an overpayment but that's just me
    4. I'm saying Stephenson's not going to sign for less than 5... He knows he's one of the top centres on the market...
    5. So we back to BIG+STRONG = GOOD... We need offence from the blue line and Lilly provides that, sign him cheap long term as that will become a bargain contract...
    6. No need, sign a 3rd option for cheap and run Woll-Hildeby-3rd

If that were a need now (and I'm not sure it is), I think there Hawks would look to do so via players who aren't washed. TOR would have to send along a somewhat meaningful pick (~3rd or 4th rounder, maybe?) to take him on. The Hawks would likely then simply buy him out.

Which, frankly, is what I TOR's best move here is: keep the pick and buy him out once this season is over.

Nick Foligno has filled that role nicely, is now signed for two more years, and best of all, is really productive in all 3 zones. He's been terrific this season. I honestly can't see any scenario where the Hawks take on Reaves.

While I understand your comparison and trade evaluations Nash still wouldn't touch that deal. Whatever Marner's extension comes in at would be over 10 mil easily. I would rather pay Forsberg 8.5 for the next 6 then whatever Marner would look to make, probably over 11mil if we're being honest for the next 8. And it's definitely not worth adding a 1st and Fabbro. The difference in production of Forsberg and Marner isn't enough to consider giving up other pieces of the roster or futures. Marner has 76 points this year and Forsberg has 74. Forsberg has also played in every game this year and is one of the more clutch scorers tied for the lead in the NHL in overtime and game winners, He also has more playoff experience. He also plays with an edge and frequently uses his bigger frame to push other players around. Marner is a great player, but not worth losing Forsberg. An extension doesn't change the fact that he's already paid too much and will look to make just as much going forward, whereas Forsberg is on a very fair deal which is easier to build around going forward

    You're way off on Stephenson.

He's going to get term and bank.

    6 mil range.

Copp got 5.6 and Compher got 5.1 in UFA and CS is better than both of them.

Marner usually plays every game, this injury is an anomaly...

And Marner has more points in way less games than Forsberg, just saying hat's the price Marner's going to be at

No thanks from NSH. I could see an argument around a Saros+ for Marner trade, but NSH adding Forsberg - a guy who scores more goals than Marner, who's locked in for less money - is crazy.

well, he's already not a leaf for life. its juste makes more sense to get rid of the old guy at 11m instead of the young one (marner).

tavares is goos but he wont be worth anywhere near 11m next year. i think moving on makes sense.

He has 2 more points in 7 less games, that's not a ton. My point still stands the difference between the two isn't enough to move Forsberg out of Nash when you consider their contracts and fit with the team.
