Convince Gibson that Ottawa is somewhere he'd like to go and that's an offer Verbeek would take.

maybe some teams would, but habs have Montembeault and Primeau, who are both solid, but playing on a team with a young defense, and also have a couple of prospects too.

giving up a lot for gibson and cole/clutterbuck are too old to make much of an impact on this team imo. Toronto trade is a hard pill to swallow, i think chych would crumble under the pressure of toronto fans/media

I'm not going to clown the Korpisalo trade (even if I don't think it actually gets done - Murray had years of success and proof of being a starter compared to Korpisalo's complete lack of talent so it's not comparable), I'm instead going to clown the Gibson one.

For starters, that's an excessively high price. Goalies traditionally don't fetch a lot on the market; Darcy Kuemper, coming off superb seasons with Arizona, fetched a 1st, 3rd and Connor Timmins. That's potentially the best goalie to have been traded in a while, and he got a package that is at best similar to what you've proposed here. In comparison, Gibson's an expensive, washed up, rapidly declining goaltender who has been below average for multiple years... and your trade proposes a 1st, two of Ottawa's best prospects, and a 4th for him with only slight retention. Absolutely not, and if Staios made that trade he would and should be fired on the spot.

To go even further though, Meriläinen is probably undisputedly Ottawa's only hope at a goalie of the future, so I can't see them moving him unless it's for a stable and secure starter that they can trust, not just more of the same (declining or unproven trash), so essentially barring a significant return that isn't the corpse of John Gibson. Järventie is the only prospect in the entirety of Ottawa's system with top 9 upside, so he's also unlikely to go... barring a significant return that isn't the corpse of John Gibson. Given that these two are at the top of Ottawa's prospect pool, it's pretty apparent they're in desperate need of solid drafting, and so giving up MORE 1sts is excessive... once again, barring a significant return that isn't the corpse of John Gibson.

Otherwise, I think Chychrun for Liljegren is reasonable in a vacuum, but given their contract statuses, I'm not sure Toronto would consider a move like that. They know what they have in Liljegren.

Korpisalo and his contract would require A LOT more to move off of for any team. Obviously the Habs have no need for this (or for mid-round draft picks). Korpisalo is currently in the "unmoveable contract" territory with Jack Campbell...the sort of area where the cost of moving it makes it a non-starter for Ottawa. Best scenario for Ottawa is for him to reset and rebuild some value

I think I'd prefer the bad goalie and bad contract of Korpisalo over the bad goalie and bad contract of Gibson... Korpi is cheaper and has a really easy buy-out cost. Plus, no need to waste the assets.

That's what Armchair GMs think but we also thought that for Matt Murray before he was traded to Toronto.

Koorpisalo has 4 years remaining on his contract, Murray at that time had 2 (and had previous relationship with Dubas). It's not impossible he moves, but it is impossible he moves to the Habs, who have two goalies they like, and a third at BC who will be coming along in 2025-26.

the difference is that Matt Murray was a starting goalie (kinda) on a team that won back-to-back cups, and only had 2 years left at ~4.6 with retention and was 27 y/o. Korpi turns 30 next month, has twice as long of a contract, and doesn't have the same track record / reputation as Murray. Korpi has had a sv% above .900 in 4 of 9 seasons he's played in the NHL, 2 of which were his first 2 seasons, so 2 of his last 7 have been above .900, that's not good, where as Murray was above .900 in 5 of 7 seasons he played before the trade. Neither player is worth the contract they got, but Korpi's contract is worse imo because while he makes less money he's got more term than Murray did when the sens shipped him off and doesn't have the stats that Murray did, where he had proven that he can be good enough to take a team all the way

Fair enough, that's the problem I thought we'd run into.

Maybe if its mid-July and the Sens are having a "Summer of Steve" Gibson can be convinced that the Sens are going to be a contender.

it's $3.5M for 4 years. Some teams would say yes. However, that 10 team no trade is a big deterrent. Also, whole reason Mtl traded Allen was to not have 3 goalies in Montembeault, Primeau, _________.
