Assuming this is done in the off-season, Necas is an RFA that can be signed for 8 years, whilst Buchnevich would be entering the final year of his contract before being a UFA. They aren’t that far apart offensively, although Buchnevich certainly outshines Necas defensively. How is Necas being overvalued here? You simply don’t trade young top 6 RFA players for older pending UFA players.

Canes pass. Buch isn't returning Necas. We can take Buch from you, but it'll be a futures package, Drury could even be in it, but Necas is just straight better

The only way a Necas for Buch trade would have occurred went out the window at the TDL.

If the canes trade Necas it will be because they can’t agree to a contract prior to Arb. Why would STL want that? Why would the Canes want an expiring asset back for Necas?

It’s not about over valuing Necas (which some Canes certainly do) - it’s about the fact this doesn’t make sense for either side. I haven’t even commented on the other assets and contract issues involved here.

It could make sense for the Blues given the age of our core. With Tommer and Kyrou in their mid 20s, Necas fits that exactly more than Buch.

Then in Buch, Canes get a better all around player and can have him half retained for a year then talk extensions if they wish.

Like what you mentioned, a lot of ifs. If Necas doesn't want a contract prior to arb, if Buch price tag too much here. A lot of potential changes could come, just a concept I wouldn't mind.
