You honestly think St. Louis or Montreal would make these trades?

I wouldn't trade you unretained Savard for that pittance, let alone retain half for this year and next.

Yes. Tanev w/ retention went for a 2nd, prospect and 2026 4th. No reason that Savard goes for anything close to that. This is a 3rd, 4th and 3rd pairing defencemen, which is consistent with what the market was set at with the Tanev trade.

Buchnevich is a good trade too. STL get a 20 goal scorer in Jarnkrok, a top (if not Toronto's top prospect), and a 1st and 4th. That is the going rate for a player like Buchnevich - see, for example, the Lindholm trade last month. Lindholm is also more valuable, but the return is the same for Buchnevich.

Why are the leafs trading for a bad, expensive bottom pairing guy? They have a bunch of better and cheaper ones

I do love how habs fans are keeping this up even though a guy who is like 100x better than savard just went for not much more than this

Buch is signed to cheap contract next year also so comparing him to the Lindholm trade doesn't work.

Buchnevich is very much not a good trade too. Buchnevich is signed for an additional year after this one. Throw the Lindholm trade out the window because it's not comparable. I would argue pretty easily that Lindholm is not more valuable, but it will just get into semantics about position vs. inflated numbers. Nothing against Minten, fine prospect. But we don't need another forward prospect, if that's all you have to offer fine, a trade doesn't make sense. We can get this package (Similar to the Lindholm trade) for Buchnevich next deadline when he is an expiring UFA (similar to the Lindholm trade).

1 - Let me stop you right there. Neimela is not the Leafs top prospect, and he is CERTAINLY not "a top prospect". Dude is maaaaaaaybe a #4 guy, at absolute best. Even the homer TML media understands that.

2 - Ehhhh what???

Couldn’t be more wrong about that Savard take. The situation is completely different. First Tanev was a ufa and he probably made it clear that he wouldn’t comeback so Calgary had to take what they thought was the best return possible. Savard have term left on is deal so Mtl doesn’t have to accept such absurdity. They don’t need or don’t want to trade Savard, so if a team wants him they will need to pay what Mtl is asking and not what would be the current market for a very comparable players in Tanev. Mtl won’t move Savard unless some gm goes crazy and overpaid to get him.

LMAO, you think Tanev "set the market" there is still 9 days before the TDL and as many as 5 teams have been linked to Savard now that Tanev is off the board. Hughes sets his own price and it's up to the Leafs to match or better that. The price is 2nd + 3rd without retention, 1st with retention. The price goes up the closer we get to the TDL, so if you don't like it now you had better not wait much longer.
