I don't see how, CBJ paid a 1st and conditional 2nd for Provo with retention. If THIS is sell low - so is what they paid to get him! soooooo.... its even!

He can handle big minutes (check)
Comes in at under 3 mill with one team eating money and not a 3rd team (check)
He has term (check)
Unlike this trade, CBJ most likely adds a 2nd back (as the going rate for a 1st is 2 2nds and a 3rd, one of the 2nds being early) meaning the leafs can still get 1-2 solid prospects

Provorov's also played worse in CBJ and requested a trade

Leafs don't need a LHD. Don't need Provy and his cap next season, never mind good young assets which are in short supply. So the exchange puts Giordano on the bench and puts McCabe on the right side. Marginally improves the Leafs.

From the last time we had this discussion, for everyone else:

$1.25M retained ~= 5th based on the Orlov trade. $2.4M retained is ~= 3rd based on that? Over two seasons, with the retention slot locked up, probably a 2nd and 3rd (we'll call it 2 3rds).
Provorov the player is a 1st, so overall CBJ would be looking for a 1st and two 3rds in total. Plenty of teams would pay that for a 2nd-pairing D-man for two seasons with some offensive upside at ~$2.4M.

TOR: Provorov (50% retained)
CBJ: 2024 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th

Provy is having a decent year on a really bad team, he's better defensively than he gets credit for and worse offensively than he gets credit for. We should be able to get a 1st + additional picks (without sending any out) for a 2nd-pair D-man that eats 23 minutes a night and scores ~0.5 ppg. Think Gavrikov, but slightly cheaper and a little better.
