Description
In 2025-26, the Canadiens of Montreal has 14 players on contract. The line of center is pretty strong with 6 players that could play at center
-Nick Suzuki
-Kirby Dach
-Alex Newhook
-Owen Beck
-Filip Mesar
-Riley Kidney (if he has a good development)
Center is not a position to be worried about.
At the wing, Caufield and Roy are the only two on contract. We have a lot of RFA winger but if we can add a top 6 winger, it would be very interesting.
At defense, it's very complicated
-Kaiden Guhle
-Justin Barron
-Lane Hutson
-David Reinbacher
-Arber Xhekaj
-Logan Mailloux
-Jayden Struble
-Adam Engstrom
-Bodgan Konyushkov
-Jordan Harris
-Jonathan Kovacevic
They are all futur NHLers, unfortunately, we can't have them all. Some of them could be use on trade for having a really good attackers.

Avs are not paying a 1st for Monahan; they probably wouldn't want him at all. They've already tried someone like him and it doesn't work with their playing style.

McDonagh will not be traded nor retire. Even if he did, NSH is not trading Askarov for a 30 year old defenseman.

Easy pass for Anaheim

We aren’t getting a big piece back, we don’t think about trading Zegras

The fact that we are sending a 2nd rounder attached to Z is almost insulting

The first Avs-trade has been commented on enough. The second one is new. Byram could probably be made available, for a young 2C. Probably not for anything else. He is a very good fit with the Avs style of play. But he holds more trade value than Girard e.g. (Also, hard to argue Girard not beeing better this year). Therefore i could see him being a trade chip. As said, for a young 2C.

I have a very, very, very hard time seeing Lehky being available. He’s perfect for the system and can play all over the lineup. Teammates loves him and Bednar loves him. Imho, i can’t see any way they would make him available for trade.

Avs declined Cutter Gauthier for Byram. If MTL wants him they need to come prepared to pay for him. This isnt even close.

Didn't even see that one but that is extremely lopsided in favor of Montreal. You're asking the Avs for two of their best roster players and giving back nothing that helps them in the immediate. There is a world where I could see them trading Byram but it would have to involve a very good, affordable center and probably a 1st coming their way to start. And Lehknonen is, more or less, core for the Avs; what he does at the price he does it for cannot be replaced.

Well, like one week ago, you said that Montreal first round pick in 2024, Ylonen and Harris were good. Now I add Barron who is worth 3 times Harris and you said no, that's weird...

With how Askarov has been playing, he would require an elite prospect in return. I don’t see NSH moving him at this point either way. He is arguably the best goalie prospect currently (the argument could be made with Wallstedt as well), so it would need to be a much more interesting deal than anything suggested thus far.

Okay but don't forget that Nashville try to trade him to Montreal this summer with their two first round pick (15th and like 22th) for the 5th overall. Maybe Heineman, a 2nd round pick, Primeau could be fair?

Still no. The Avs need immediate help at C and it has to be someone that can legitimately play 2C but isn't going to break the bank. What you're offering here is futures but, for the Avs, the future is now. I would say Dach is interesting but he's been pretty fragile so that doesn't inspire confidence that it solves the problem. Also, the Avs would need to replace Byram and none of what you offered helps with that; Struble isn't that impressive.

I refuse to believe that any of us Anaheim stalwarts thought that a package for Zegras including Jordan Harris was acceptable, solely because Harris, although we think that he's a good player, is a LhD and that's our strongest and deepest position.

Ylonen to us is a throw-in.

Something along the lines of Barron plus Beck or Mesar plus the 2024 first might be what we have to accept if there is some absolute commitment to trading Zegras, but I don't think that such a compelling motivation exists.

I don't like the trade with Colorado at all, I think Struble is more important than Byram and why bring back Lehkonen plus give them a 1 and 2 pick. This is one of the worst transactions I have seen, excellent for the Avs, rotten for the CH

The trades lean optimistic for Montreal…maybe something along these lines….

Monahan = 2nd
Savard = maybe 3rd in final year
Zegras = maybe Roy+1st+2nd
Askarov = Young F, probably C…maybe Dach or Beck+
Byram = Probably similar amount (w/o Lehkonen)

But do they even need Askorov with Fowler only a couple of years behind? And can ride Monty and Allen for year and a half.

I would not be surprised to see Monahan extend in Montreal…especially if they can get around $4m x 4 type of deal.

Slafkovsky $7.875m x 8 years seems like a lot. He won’t have Arb rights at first RFA (not that they would help him much). I think he gets something more similar to Kakko’s bridge deal. Mid $2m’s x 2 years. Then go long-term.

I think they have to move one of Gallagher or Anderson somehow.

I think it's you who doesn't know what you're talking about. Byram max 25 points per year, we have Reinbacher-Hutson and Mailloux on offense, so I maintain my choice, CH has more needs for Struble than Byram

No.

I also haven’t seen that substantiated by reputable sources. Not saying it’s untrue, but it’s just a rumor as far as I can tell. If you have sources, I’d be interested to read them. I don’t doubt Trotz would be interested in swapping an elite goalie for an elite center had one of the big 4 in this past draft dropped to 5OA.

But assuming that is true, that was prior to the poor play of Saros this season and the exceptions play of Askarov. Player value fluctuates just as trade blocks do. And so if NSH was willing to trade him for 5OA (assuming they were looking for a 1C prospect), I don’t see how any proposed deal you’ve come up with is close to that kind of value. If Askarov is traded, as I said before, it will be for an elite prospect— and one at a position of need. This deal doesn’t check either of those boxes.
