"Flames GM Craig Conroy has been engaged in trade discussions with several teams involving a number of his players, including defencemen Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev and centre Elias Lindholm; all three of whom are eligible to become unrestricted free agents July 1. According to separate sources, TFP has learned trade talks involving Calgary’s blueliners picked up over the last week. One of the teams believed to have had recent discussions with Conroy are the New Jersey Devils, who have been linked to both Hanifin and Tanev."

Nothing sounds close....but right direction, I suppose

Would rather pettersson but would be down for Hanifin as long as the price isn't too steep

Both sides accept this trade.
In my mind, Hanifin would be a great fit for the Devils.

I would have Hanifin higher than Pettersson if we could extend him at reasonable rate (~Weeger, Severson, Sanheim, Lindholm number).

Isn't the Devils 2024 1st round pick potentially getting sent to San Jose, depending on if the Devils reach the ECF? Would the Devils be able to move this year's 1st?

They can move it with a condition. Plus, something people aren’t considering. The 2025 draft is deeper towards the end. This draft outside of the top few players is considered one of the weaker ones in recent memory.

If the 2024 goes to San Jose, it would revert to 2025 pick.

Topias Vilen is pretty solid…good chance at NHL future. Defensive dman. Skates well.

I really don't see that in him. But even then a guy with 3rd pair ceiling and a probably late 1st is an underwhelming offer

Two years of John Moore cap dump = $2.75m x 2 = $5.5m
50% retention on Lindholm = $2.6m

The two 2nds paid for that.

Hanifin market will be ~1st and 3rd or 1st and prospect

You are vastly overvaluing the cost of retention. Anaheim was paying him ~700k after the trade, that is maybe worth a 4th round pick at most.

Sure there was a cost to taking on Moore but he was also on LTIR the entire time and very likely covered by insurance

Lastly Hanifin is having a far better season than Lindholm was having and is a year younger. If this is your best offer you probably aren't getting him

2.6 million in retention is objectively set at around 3rd round pick (see the Kane trade)

Your example is a single time for a team in a desperate situation the norm for retention is a late round pick

The norm for about 1 mill in retention is a late round pick. 2.6 mill is absolutely a 3rd

Flames easily say no. Would need a much better prospect.

And if retention is worth that much why wouldn't flames look for a deal where they can maximize that. We have 3 mention spots and can take cap back.

You realize that Boston is paying a $4.5m overage this year because last years cap situation was dire. They paid a second round pick because Moore was on the books last year as well and by doing so, they freed up the AAV amount they used to sign both Bergeron and Krejci. It was a necessary part of their plan if they were going to resign Lindholm.

This is probably the price without retention for Hanifin. Not sure why Calgary wouldn’t retain unless they are getting a salary back that they’d want to flip, but cheap owners generally suck. When is the last time Calgary retained salary?

I absolutely believe that Hanifn with retention is worth a first and third. You might be able to get a first and second if you take back a ~2.5m salary that no one wants.
