It's hilarious how much the Staal line doesn't score considering how much they dominate xGF.

I always hate using expected anything as a measuring tool, it's kind of like Timbits hockey or soccer (made up to make partents feel better about their kids cause the kids always keep track of the score even if the refs don't) a useless stat, they may show who was playing the best but the best players don't always score and how often do top scorers just put the puck on net and it goes in from bad angles or a deflection or whatever? I mean look at just this ranking, do you really truly expect Wood-Colton-O'Conner to outscore the Crosby or Couturier lines?! How about the LA line, do you really honestly truly expect them to be the 3rd highest scoring line in all of hockey? If you do then I have oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you!

"Expected" is basically "scoring chances". This is in percentage and not in expected goals for .

It's not about expecting Wood or Colton to outscore Crosby, it means that the Colton line has had 61.9% of "scoring chances" in their favor when on the ice. So it takes into account defense as well.

Expected numbers are a good indicator of overall play and tries to avoid weird fluctuations like a goalie being awful or a top scorer in a scoring slump.
