IIRC one of the biggest knocks on Strome has always been his skating so I'd question whether he'd be a fit with the Avs. They could be trading a lot for another bad fit. I also think that's a little over optimistic on the return.

The extra years of Jensen's contract will be worse than one more of Schmidt.

Strome is in no way a 1C. He may be playing that position on the Caps but he is, in reality, a borderline 2C/3C; his production is barely better than Johansen and his skating isn't great so this is, basically, a lateral move for the Avs at a higher price and a lot more term so it's the Avs that are doing the Caps a favor in this deal, not the other way around.
