Until they added Hampus they were playing 4 3rd pair d men every night. It was a big problem. Trading Carlo goes right back to that. Not only that he is one of, if not the leader, in the NHL in short handed minutes. Shatty and Mitchell sure as hell not playing that role. Trade Carlo and an injury to Mac or Hampus and the D, already paper thin, is crippled.

San Jose isn’t retaining for the balance of Hertl’s contract and Boston isn’t trading Carlo. The original deal has a ton of flaws in it that it really isn’t worth discussing
