Leafs have a new GM that didn’t make either of the McCabe or Sandin deals. There’s no reason for Toronto to make this deal - Liljegren and TVR are very similar players and in no way is the difference of them a 1st round pick. Both guys would be valued around a late 2nd to an early 3rd round pick

Lol, I thought the 1st was on WSHs side and was thinking "well that would give the Leafs one super old D-core especially if they get Tanev as well, but recuperating a 1st from Liljegren gives them options...." Then I read the first comment and was like why is GreatWhiteNorth opposed to this if they are similar players, only realized when I read the second comment.

thanks for the info!

tvr has two years remaining after this season

mccabe at 50% retained for 2.5 years returned a 1st and 2nd

tvr at 50% retained for 2.5 years would fetch similar return imo

The “2 years remaining” isn’t really a good argument point here because Liljegren is a RFA this off-season so with arbitration rights so he’s still under team control for at least the same amount of time but less risk to sign with another team when his deal his up. That’s actually more value towards Liljegren than TVR

Tvr is 32, him having term isnt a good thing, and he is at best as good. The difference is liljegren will be better longer

it goes wo saying that liljegren will be better longer, but tvr is better than liljegren rn imo, and will cost probably half as much after this season.

2 years for a 32yo is minimal risk

Except that he isnt better, and he's gonna cost less because he's older and worse and paying a declining guy 1.5 million vs paying a guy in his prime years maybe 800k more isnt apealing straight up, let alone with an added first. This is horrible value for Toronto in every way imaginable

TVR is 32. Liljegren is 24 with RFA rights and arbitration eligible for 2 years.. the term is identical.

Liljegren likely signs a longer term deal this off-season if he’s not moved, then it becomes Liljeren at like 4-5 years.. if you’d take TVR for 2 years at over that then you’re just dumb.

this is fair if you think liljegren is better than tvr rn

2 years for a 32 year old in exchange for a 24 year old that is already as good as him on his worst day isnt a risk, it's flat out awful

the salary cap exists

why are you acting like control over rights is the only consideration? lol

The salary cap is due to increase significantly over the next few years.

Lol. You’re the one that said that TVR for 2 years was worth more than Liljegren when the cap hit wouldn’t only likely be about $1M more for Liljegren and he’s younger and not declining.

Take the L and the constructive criticism kid. It’s a horrible idea for Toronto.
